He was a keen dancer and played competitive League Bridge for Bathgate Bridge Club.

Eliza worked in Walter’s shop and continued for 10 years after his death. She was artistic, painted on silk, mostly flowers. She was a member of Westfield Woman’s Rural Institute and gave many demonstrations of tatting. She enjoyed Scottish country dancing.

1024. John Doig of Cessintullie was born about 1595 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland.
John acquired the Mill of Cessintully by assignation of his father on 11 Feb 1634. Thereafter the tenants of the local farms did not cooperate in using the mill, a monopoly, and making proper payments. In 1637 John Dog brought suit against the local farmers to exclusively use his mill and pay the required portion. Included in his suit were defendants John Dog, a portioner of Murdieston, and David Dog of Ballingrew. In 1642 James Dog of Gartincaber claimed Cessintully.

2048. James Doig of Dunrobin was born about 1564 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland. He died in Feb 1634 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland. He married Dorothy Cunningham.
On 7 Apr 1590 his father, Paul, wrote a Charter for certain lands in favor of Dorothy Cunnynghame, lawful daughter of Margaret Cunnynghame, Lady Craigends, now wife of his son, James (MCB). Margaret Cunnynghame was his father's wife.
On 7 June 1614 James received jointly with his father a charter of the lands of Coldoch Easter, Middle Coldoch, Kip, Arnefinlay, and the Mill of Cessintullie, which had belonged to his grandfather, James; his principal dwelling was at Easter Coldoch; witness was James Dog "meis nepote" (MCB - RH11/54/1); on the same date a sasine to the same lands was given to James and his father; witness was James Dog, eldest lawful son to the same James Dog (MCB); this charter was confirmed on 21 July 1615 (GS). All the evidents and writs of his lands were uplifted on 3 Oct 1629; John and Paul are listed as his sons (MCB). Son James was not mentioned as he died in 1619. James Dog of Cessintullie was witness to the christening of Jealls Dog on 1 Dec 1631.
On 19 Dec 1618 James Dog of Dunrobin, Dorothy Cunningham, his spouse, and Paul his father gave a sasine to Walter Chisholm as proprietor. And on the same day another sasine to Walter Chisome mentions Paul Dog and his wife Agnes, their son James Dog and his wife Dorothy Cunningham, and their grandson James Dog son and heir. On 22 Jan 1619 a renunciation by Walter Chisholm or Chisome, mentions Paul Dog of Dunrobin husband of deceased Janet Shaw and son James Dog, feuar of Dunrobin. James, by his own hand on 11 Feb 1634, assigned the Mill of Cessintully to his son, John Dog, and his heirs. James died later in Feb 1634.

Paul was a minor at the time of his brother James' death on 22 Dec 1555 (PS). At that time ward and nonentry was granted to Thomas Graham of Boquhoppill with right of marriage of Paul (PS). His uncle, Archibald Dog, was appointed his tutor on 14 Aug 1557 (CD).
On 7 June 1565 Paul recorded at Edinburgh a sasine for lands of Easter (Nether) and Middle Coldoch, Arfinley, and Cessintulye; these lands had been in the hands of the Queen for 8 years (ER). In a discharge dated 9 Apr 1567 by Mary Queen of Scots mentions "the miln and miln landis of Cessintully pertaining to Paule Dog" which were assigned to James Stewart, Steward of Menteith. On 8 June 1567 Paul wrote a deed that was witnessed by his uncle Archibald; the record mentions his sister, Katherine, and brother, John (RD). On 10 Jan 1572 he recorded at Leith a sasine to lands of Nether Coldoch, belonging to Dunrobin, Auchinbanno and Severie.
On 1 Feb 1575 Paul's goods escheat (AT). [An escheat is reversion of property to the fee holder for failure of the heir.] He had a respite from escheat on 13 Apr 1576 (PS). Perhaps the respite occurred on the birth of an heir, his son, James. On 7 Apr 1590 Paul wrote a Charter for certain lands in favor of Dorothy Cunnynghame, lawful daughter of Margaret Cunnynghame, Lady Craigans, now wife of his son, James (MCB).
On 23 Dec 1592 Paull Dog of Dunrobin signed a contract as surety for 1000 merks in Easter Mugdock (Smith). On 5 Mar 1602 Paul signed a charter as curator of James Stewart, third Earl of Moray; he was joint curator with Lord St. Colm and Sir Robert Crichton of Cluny; James Stewart was a minor, and at odds with the Privy Council and feuding with his father's murderer, Huntly, and also with the Earl of Argyll. On 5 Apr 1604 a fee in life rent was granted to the lands of Coldoch Wester to Paul Dog of Dunrobin and to James Dog, his son and heir apparent; witness was James Dog of Gartincaber (RMS).
On 8 Jul 1613 in Perth he retoured as heir to his father James Dog of Dunrobin (RET). 8192. James Doig of Dunrobin died in 1539/1540 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland. He married Agnes Hamilton.
In 1505 James and his wife, Agnes, leased half of the Mill of Cessintully and Wester Coldoch (ER). On 4 May 1508 he leased half the lands of the Mill of Cessintully and part of Middle and Wester Coldoch (ER). On 7 July 1528 James Dog Junior was granted the lands of Ballechragan and Gartincaber (RMS). On 3 Apr 1532 a precept of sasine was recorded at Stirling for the Lands of Severtie were granted to him (RMS). On 29 July 1635 he granted the lands of Ballecraggan, Aggleschechinauch, Gartincaber and other lands to his brother, John (C002) (RMS). On 8 Feb 1536 James Dog Senior and his wife Agnes Hamilton were given feuferme of Easter and Middle Coldoch, Kip and Cessintully, lands which James occupied (RMS, PS). On 16 Jan 1538/9 was a confirmation to James and Agnes Dog of the lands of Dunrobyn and Auchinbannow (RMS).
James was appointed yeoman of the King's wardrobe on 17 Sept 1524 (PS), and by 1527 Groom of Royal Wardrobe (TA). On 8 Sept 1528 James (Jacobus Jr.) witnessed a charter of Queen Margaret. On 23 Sept 1528 he witnessed an agreement between James Stewart, Captain of Doune Castle, and William Edmundstone of Duntreath. In 1540 James became Seneschal of Menteith, heritably (AT).
James was keeper of Queen Margaret's wardrobe at Doune Castle. William Dunbar (c.1460-c.1521), the poet, celebrated James in The Wardraipper of Venus Boure, thus:
Quhen that I speik till him frendlyk He barkis lyk ane midding tyk, War chassand cattell throu a bog: Madam, ye heff a dangerous Dog!

James recorded his will on 8 Feb 1536 and again 16 Jan 1539 at Linlithgow. He died between 1540 and 1542. His will was recorded in Edinburgh on 5 Dec 1542 (PS, RMS).

16384. James Doig was born about 1449 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland. He died in 1526/1532 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland. He married Margaret about 1492.
In 1488 James was the King's servant (ER) as Groom of Wardrobe. In 1489 he received clothing for the King (AT). In 1490 he carried money to the King (AT). In 1494 he prepared for the Chancellor of Denmark (AT). He was appointed Chamberlain of Menteith in May 1508 (ER), and from 5 July 1508, James (Jacobi) was Chamberlain for two terms; he was at first joint Chamberlain with James Redheuch at Doune Castle.
On 10 July 1491 James leased part of Coldoch Wester, Cessintuly with the mill, Ernelaw and Kip, by the permission of his brother, Walter (ER). On 3 Oct 1491 he acquired the lands of Auchounbannow on resignation of his brother, Alexander Dog (B001), Canon of Inchmahome (RMS). On 22 Oct 1492 he leased the Mill of Cessintully jointly with his brother, Walter (ER). On 7 May 1499 he was a tenant of Cessintully, Coldoch Wester, Ernlaw, and Kip (ER). On 20 May 1500 James purchased the estate of Dunrobin, by a precept of confirmation (PS). In 1502 he was tenant in Cessintully, Ernlaw, Coldoch Wester and Kip (ER). In 1502 James let Cessintully to John Dog (B005), and his wife, Margaret MacCalpy (ER).
The last entry for James is in 1526 (ER). He died between 1526 and 1532.

12 Apr 2005 Ancestors of George Kerr Doig Page 14 16392. Lord William Cuninghame 2nd of Craigends died on 11 Aug 1533 in Scotland. The cause of death was Killed in a feud. He married Giles Campbell.
The feud in which William was killed was probably that between the families of Cuninghame (especially the Earls of Glencairn) and the Montgomeries of Eglinton. The feud began when Hugh Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Eglinton was created Bailie of Cunningham in 1498. This brought him into serious disputes with the Cunningham family, traditionally lords of that area. In 1528 the Cunninghams had burnt down the castle of Eglintoun. William and Giles had numerous other daughters, who married into the houses of Porterfield, Eldersley, Auchenames, and Newark. Giles is sometimes said to be a daughter of Sir John Campbell of Loudoun but this appears to be in error.

Walter Dog is first mentioned in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland in 1460. In 1463 he repaid the servants that were keeping Doune Castle. On 19 June 1467 Walter entered office as Chamberlain of Menteith, Bulquhidder, Strathgartney, Drummond, and Duchray. He was appointed (again) July 1471. In 1467 Walter was granted the grassum of Coldoch [A "grassum" is payment to a landlord by a tenant on entering a farm.].
32769. Elizabeth Nory was born about 1424 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland. She died about 1490 in Of Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland.
In 1480 the lands of Colloch (Coldoch) were let to Elizabeth Nory by her son Patrick.
32784. William Cuninghame 1st L. Craigends died before 19 Jun 1520 in Scotland. He married Elizabeth Stewart on 29 Jan 1484.
His father granted William an annual rent of 15 merks from the lands of Walterston in Kilbarchany. On 4 Feb 1479 he was also granted a charter of the lands of Craiganys (Craigends) in the Lordship of Ranfurly. He had a charter of Robertland on 10 July 1506, which was confirmed by James IV in 1510.

The name Dog, or Doig, is derived from the Celtic "Gille Doc," or servant of Saint Cadoc. The earliest reference to the family is a Dog who fought with Sir Walter Stewart at the battle of Largs in 1263. Alexander Doge was Vicar of Dunnychtyne (Dunnichen) in 1372.
John Dog of yt Ilk registered a Coat of Arms in 1468 (Lord Lyon's records ref - FAL 224), described as: Gules, a chevron Argent between two cinquefoils in chief Ermine and a sword erect in base Argent. [A similar Coat of Arms was continued by the Dogs of Ballengrew until the death of James Dog in 1685. The lands then passed to James' daughter Elizabeth Dog, spouse of Hugh McFarlane of Keithtoune. A Coat of Arms of the same derivation was used by the Dogs of Dunrobin and Gartincaber for about the same period.]

65568. Alexander de Cunynghame died on 11 Jun 1488 in Battle of Sauchieburn, near Stirling, Scotland. He married Margaret Hepburn.
Alexander was created Lord Kilmaurs in about 1450. In 1460 he petitioned the Pope with regard to his right to present to the parish of Glencairn (in west Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire). He was created a Lord of Parliament as Lord Kilmaurs in 1463/64. He was a strong supporter of James III against the rebel nobles headed by Prince James, and was created Earl of Glencairn on 28 May 1488. He also got a grant of land for himself and his heirs. The king was defeated at the Battle of Sauchieburn shortly after and the earl was killed alongside the king. His earldom was revoked by the new King James IV's parliament, but was later recovered by his successors.

William resigned his estates in 1400 for a new infeftment from King Robert III. He was granted or regranted the lands and baronies of Kilmaurs, Lambrachton, Kilbryde, Skelmorlie, and Polquharne, Ayrshire; the lands and barony of Redhall, co. Edinburgh; the lands of Nevy, Forfarshire; the barony of Hassingden, Roxburghshire; and the lands of Ranfurley, in barony of Renfrew.
The baronies of Glencairn and Fynlayston also came into the Cuninghame family in this generation, as

Twentieth Generation
524544. Sir William de Cunynghame of Kilmaurs, Earl of Carrick died in Dec 1396/1399. He married Eleanor Bruce.
William was Hugh's successor and was probably his son. He was created Earl of Carrick in 1361 by King David II Bruce, probably by virtue of marrying Lady Eleanor Bruce, cousin to the King. She ought not to have received the title as it was restricted to the male-line heirs of Edward Bruce, but exception was made for her. This title reverted to the Crown on the death of Lady Eleanor, in William's own lifetime. Some sources doubt the existence of Eleanor but do not explain how William could otherwise become earl.
Burke notes: "The charter in his favour is on record, and singularly incomplete, as if there had been a doubt as to the propriety of the grant:- 'David, D.G. Rex Scottorum, sciatus nos dedisse concessisse et hac presenti-carta confirmasse dilicto consanguineo nostro Willielmo de Cuninghame militi totum comitatum de Carryk.' ". The charter is not dated but was probably written at Aberdeen on 12 September 1361.
