Music Venue Trust Response to Music Industry in Wales Inquiry
Music Venue Trust response to Music Industry in Wales Inquiry 1. About Music Venue Trust Music Venue Trust is a registered charity which acts to protect, secure and improve Grassroots Music Venues in the UK. 1 Music Venue Trust is the representative body of the Music Venues Alliance 2, a network of over 500 Grassroots Music Venues in the UK. A full list of the 34 Music Venues Alliance Wales members is provided at Annex A. 2. Grassroots Music Venues in 2019 A. A nationally and internationally accepted definition of a Grassroots Music Venue (GMV) is provided at Annex B. This definition is now in wide usage, including by the UK, Scottish and Welsh Parliaments. 3 GMVs exhibit a specific set of social, cultural and economic attributes which are of special importance to communities, artists, audiences, and to the wider music industry. Across sixty years, this sector has played a vital research and nurturing role in the development of the careers of a succession of UK musicians, for example The Beatles (The Cavern, Liverpool) through The Clash (100 Club, London), The Undertones (The Casbah, Derry), Duran Duran (Rum Runner, Birmingham), Housemartins (Adelphi, Hull), Radiohead (Jericho Tavern, Oxford), Idlewild (Subway, Edinburgh). All three of the UK’s highest grossing live music attractions in 2017 (Adele, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay) commenced their careers with extensive touring in this circuit. 4 In Wales, GMVs have played a central role in kickstarting the careers of The Manic Street Preachers (TJs, Newport), Supper Furry Animals (Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff), The Joy Formidable, (Central Station, Wrexham), Gruff Rhys (Neuadd Ogwen, Bangor), Funeral For A Friend (Hobo’s Bridgend), Skindred (Sin City, Swansea). -
Old and Middle Welsh David Willis ([email protected]) Department of Linguistics, University of Cambridge
Old and Middle Welsh David Willis ([email protected]) Department of Linguistics, University of Cambridge 1 INTRODUCTION The Welsh language emerged from the increasing dialect differentiation of the ancestral Brythonic language (also known as British or Brittonic) in the wake of the withdrawal of the Roman administration from Britain and the subsequent migration of Germanic speakers to Britain from the fifth century. Conventionally, Welsh is treated as a separate language from the mid sixth century. By this time, Brythonic speakers, who once occupied the whole of Britain apart from the north of Scotland, had been driven out of most of what is now England. Some Brythonic-speakers had migrated to Brittany from the late fifth century. Others had been pushed westwards and northwards into Wales, western and southwestern England, Cumbria and other parts of northern England and southern Scotland. With the defeat of the Romano-British forces at Dyrham in 577, the Britons in Wales were cut off by land from those in the west and southwest of England. Linguistically more important, final unstressed syllables were lost (apocope) in all varieties of Brythonic at about this time, a change intimately connected to the loss of morphological case. These changes are traditionally seen as having had such a drastic effect on the structure of the language as to mark a watershed in the development of Brythonic. From this period on, linguists refer to the Brythonic varieties spoken in Wales as Welsh; those in the west and southwest of England as Cornish; and those in Brittany as Breton. A fourth Brythonic language, Cumbric, emerged in the north of England, but died out, without leaving written records, in perhaps the eleventh century. -
June 2016 President: Vice President: Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace
No. 495 - June 2016 President: Vice President: Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace Nothing like a Dame (make that two!) The VW’s Shakespeare party this year marked Shakespeare’s 452nd birthday as well as the 400th anniversary of his death. The party was a great success and while London, Stratford and many major cultural institutions went, in my view, a bit over-bard (sorry!), the VW’s party was graced by the presence of two Dames - Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins, two star Shakespeare performers very much associated with the Old Vic. The party was held in the Old Vic rehearsal room where so many greats – from Ninette de Valois to Laurence Olivier – would have rehearsed. Our wonderful Vice-President, Nickolas Grace, introduced our star guests by talking about their associations with the Old Vic; he pointed out that we had two of the best St Joans ever in the room where they would have rehearsed: Eileen Atkins played St Joan for the Prospect Company at the Old Vic in 1977-8; Joan Plowright played the role for the National Theatre at the Old Vic in 1963. Nickolas also read out a letter from Ronald Pickup who had been invited to the party but was away in France. Ronald Pickup said that he often thought about how lucky he was to have six years at the National Theatre, then at Old Vic, at the beginning of his career (1966-72) and it had a huge impact on him. Dame Joan Plowright Dame Joan Plowright then regaled us with some of her memories of the Old Vic, starting with the story of how when she joined the Old Vic school in 1949 part of her ‘training’ was moving chairs in and out of the very room we were in. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract As popular music eclipsed Hollywood as the most powerful mode of seduction of Western youth, rock-stars erupted through the counter-culture as potent political figures. Following its sensational arrival, the politics of popular musical culture has however moved from the shared experience of protest movements and picket lines and to an individualised and celebrified consumerist experience. As a consequence what emerged, as a controversial and subversive phenomenon, has been de-fanged and transformed into a mechanism of establishment support. -
Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter.
