Disse to rapportene må ses i sammenheng. E-mail: [email protected] (Received May ,+, ,**/; Accepted December ,0, ,**/) Abstract: Change of several glaciers in Spitsbergen Island was investigated using surface photographs taken in +3-- and afterward. All glaciers investigated decreased their thickness and area at their terminal parts in the period from +3-- to ,**.. key words: Spitsbergen Island, surface photograph, glacier change, 13 degree North +. Introduction The state of glaciers in past, when no satellite or airborne data were yet available, can be investigated with photographs taken on the ground. To utilize this old data source in comparative study, aiming to reveal the long term glacier change, the pictures of the identical glaciers taken at later year are necessary. In +33-, authors took sequential photographs of the coastal topography from the ship sailing around Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Islands (Ito and Yoshioka, +33.). In +3--, 0* years before the observation above, a geographer, Kouji Iizuka and an engineer, Shinji Okada visited Spitsbergen Island individually, and both of them took photographs of the coastal glaciers. They introduced Spitsbergen Island to Japanese public by publishing books which contained glacier photographs (Iizuka, +3-2; Okada, +3-/). It was found, some old pictures have their modern counterparts; same glaciers were photographed at similar spots and in similar angle once again in +33-, after 0* years.

The subsequent melt-out of debris-rich englacial structures during the Correspondence to: quiescent phase produces geometrical ridge networks on glacier forelands that are diagnostic of surge H. Lovell, [email protected] activity. We investigate the link between debris entrainment and proglacial geomorphology by analyzing basal ice, englacial structures, and ridge networks exposed at the margins of Tunabreen, a tidewater surge-type glacier in Svalbard. The basal ice facies display clear evidence for brittle and ductile tectonic deformation, Citation: Lovell, H., E.

Summary From the evening of August 2nd to the afternoon of August 8th 2007, the Department of Geology of the University of Tromsø (UiTø), Norway, arranged a scientific cruise to West Spitsbergen fjords on R/V “Jan Mayen”. The port of departure and arrival was Longyearbyen. Investigated areas were Isfjorden, Sassenfjorden, Tempelfjorden, Nordfjorden, Dicksonfjorden, van Keulenfjorden, Hornsundbanken, as well as Brepollen and Samarinvågen in Hornsund (Fig. 1). In Sassenfjorden and Tempelfjorden, 8 conductivity-temperature-depth and turbidity measurements (CTDT) were performed. Furthermore, nine box cores (BC), one piston core (PC) and one gravity core (GC) were retrieved. Whereas one GC was retrieved in Nordfjorden, two PC and one GC were retrieved in Dicksonfjorden. In van Keulenfjorden, 4 CTDT casts were performed and three BC, two PC and two GC were retrieved, respectively.
