Journal of the Research Society of Pakistan Volume No. 54, Issue No. 2 (July - December, 2017) Mahmood-ul-Hasan * DEPICTION OF ASOKA RAJA IN THE BUDDHIST ART OF GANDHARA Abstract Asoka was the grandson of the Chndragupta Maurya, founder of one of the greatest empires of the ancient India (321-297 BC). The empire won by Chandragupta had passed to his son Bindusara, after his death, it was again transmitted to his son Asoka. During early years of his kingship he was a very harsh ruler. But after witnessing the miseries and suffering of people during the Kalinga War (260 BCE.) Ashoka converted to Buddhism and decided to substitute the reign of the peace and tranquility for that of violence. Due to his acts of piety and love for the Buddhist faith he become the most popular and personality after Buddha for the Buddhists. Many legends associated with him i.e. “a handful dust”, “redistribution of Relics”, “ his visit of underwater stupa at Ramagrama” are depicted in Gandhara Art. In the present article an effort has been made to identify and analyze the legends of Ashoka in the light of their historical background. Introduction The Buddhist Art of Gandhara came in to being in the last century before the Christian era, when the Sakas were ruling in the North-West (Marshall, 1973:17) and further developed during the Parthian period (1st century A.D.). Like the Sakas, the Parthians were confirmed philhellenes and proud of their Hellenistic culture, and not only had they large numbers of Greek subjects in their empire but they were in a position to maintain close commercial contacts with the Mediterranean coasts (Ibid: 6). -

3/5/2021 Top 10 Maurya Empire rulers who changed the history 1. Chandragupta Maurya: Chandragupta Maurya (Raj: 323-298 BC) was the first founder of the Maurya Empire in ancient India. They succeeded in bringing entire India under one empire. The date of the throne of Chandragupta Maurya is generally considered to be 324 BC, he ruled for approximately 25 years and thus the end of his rule was usually done in 297 BC. Later in 297 his son Bindusara took over his empire. The Maurya Empire is considered to be one of the most powerful empires in history. At the end of his empire, Chandragupta had success in governing all the Indian subcontinent excepting Tamil Nadu and present Odisha. His empire was spread from Bengal to Afghanistan and Balochistan and from west to Pakistan in the Himalayas and the northern part of Kashmir. As well as expanding to Platau in the south. He combined the piety of a saint with the practical qualities of a king, and in the history of Buddhism he ranks second only to Buddha... Ashoka Lata • In the history of the world there have been thousands of kings and emperors who called themselves 'their highnesses,' 'their majesties,' and 'their exalted majesties' and so on. They shone for a brief moment, and as quickly disappeared. But Ashoka shines and shines brightly like a bright star, even unto this day. • Ashoka was the son of the Mauryan Emperor Bindusara by a relatively lower ranked queen named Dharma. Dharma was said to be the daughter of a poor Brahmin who introduced her into the harem of the Emperor as it was predicted that her son would be a great ruler. Although Dharma was of priestly lineage, the fact that she was not royal by birth made her a very low-status consort in the harem. • Asoka had several elder half-brothers and just one younger sibling, Vitthashoka, another son of Dharma. The princes were extremely competitive, but as a youngster young Asoka is said to have excelled in the military and academic disciplines in which the boys were tutored. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY IDSG GOVERNMENT FIRST GRADE COLLEGE CHIKAMAGALUR-577102 ABSTRACT Chanakya dedicated his life to forming the Maurya Empire and guiding its pioneer Chandragupta Maurya and his son, Bindusara. He was the royal advisor, economist and philosopher during their reign. Born in 371 BC, Chanakya has been traditionally identified as Kautilya or Vishnugupta. Vishnugupta was actually a redactor of Kautilya’s original work, which suggests that Kautilya and Vishnugupta are different people. Chandragupta was an eminent ruler of the Maurya Empire. He successfully conquered most of the Indian subcontinent and is believed to be the first king who unified India. He was well revered and accepted by other kings. The Teacher And The Student Chanakya and Chandragupta shared a relationship based on reverence and trust. Chanakya was not just a teacher to Chandragupta; he was also his prime minister, friend, well-wisher and advisor. Chanakya was the person and power behind Chandragupta's early rise to power. HARSHIKA BANDARA DASANAYAKA Assistant Lecture, Department of Pāli & Buddhist Studies, University of Ruhuna, Matara, Sri Lanka ABSTRACT Among the many kings who extended their patronage to Buddhism, the most prominent are Asoka, Kaniska and Harsha. Asoka was the person that made Buddhism a world religion. It was during his time well known nine missions were sent to various countries. Many inscriptions to impart the knowledge of morals were erected everywhere in his kingdom. After Ashoka a Kushana king called Kaniska supported Sarvastivada School, although it was during his times that the first Mahayana Sutras marked their appearance. King Harsha Wardhana was also a great patron of Buddhism in India. Asoka (268-232) is mentioned by historians as ‘the greatest of kings’, ‘not because of the physical extent of his empire, extensive as it was, but because of his character as a man, the ideals for which he stood and the principals by which he governed. Whatever religion Asoka believed in before his deeply moving experience of Kalinga war, he had converted himself to Buddhism at the time of third council. His conversion to Buddhism is compared by Rhys Davids with the Roman Emperor Constantine’s to Christianity. 1 His pilgrimages to the Buddhist sites were followed by erection of pillars with inscriptions that record the historical significance of those places. -
