For Immediate Release Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Race Schedule, Drivers and Fan Information For Immediate Release Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Race Schedule, Drivers and Fan Information INDIANAPOLIS (April 25, 2019) – The Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge will return to New Castle Motorsports Park for the 4th time on Sunday, May 5, 2019. The event has been a popular one with the racers and sponsors of IndyCar, many of whom were close friends and competitors of Wheldon’s during his racing career and are glad to be able to give back and support the fundraiser. The winning team will receive specially designed rings from Jostens, who are the Official Jeweler of INDYCAR as well as a Ritmo Mundo watch. Kimball and the No. 83 Levemir® FlexTouch® Chevrolet started in the middle of Row 5 for the 200-lap race. The field saw an early yellow on the first lap for a multi-car incident in Turn 1 involving teammate Sage Karam. With extensive clean-up, the race would not see a green lap until the restart on Lap 12. By Lap 27 Kimball had advanced three spots up to 11th until pitting for the No. 83’s first stop of the race on Lap 37. The No. 83 had advanced to eighth by Lap 46 and made two more passes for sixth by Lap 60. The second yellow of the day came on Lap 64 and NNCGR brought the No. 83 in for the second stop of the day on Lap 65 under yellow for fuel and tires. Over the next 10 laps, Kimball would move from sixth to the third position until pitting again on Lap 100 for fuel and tires.

This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

Daniel’s win, the second for the team and for the Renault Energy F1­2014 Power Unit this season, came after a thrilling three­way battle for the lead with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel secured seventh position for Infiniti Red Bull Racing and Jean­Eric Vergne ninth for Scuderia Toro Rosso, putting three Renault Energy F1­2014 Power Units into the top ten. The result consolidates Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s second position in the constructors’ championship and Daniel Ricciardo’s third in the drivers’ race. Key race points: Daniel Ricciardo mastered the ever­evolving track conditions to move into the lead on lap 9 during the first safety car period. He retained the lead until the second deployment of the safety car and then pitted for a third time in the final third of the race.
