01503 263206 NEWS FROM THE EAST LOOE TOWN TRUST

This summer is a time of change at the Trust. Our long-term stalwart Admin Manager, Mrs Judy Martin, announced her retirement from next March, after more than 10 years with the Trust, and Steve Cole from our Maintenance Team has taken retirement. These changes prompted Trustees to review how we organise our staffing and the way we work to help us deliver on our Charitable Objects in future years.

We have decided to reinstate the role of Trust Manager, which has been taken on by Anona Vazquez-Masson and we are recruiting for an Office Administrator to support her in that role. Our Maintenance Manager, Antony Scarah, now has full-time support from Bill Friend to keep our beach, seafront and Trust properties in good order, with some additional help over the busy summer period.

We are also changing some of our systems to bring them up to date, so we will close the office for this overhaul for two weeks from 6th to 17th August.

Our Museum volunteers have also been busy designing new displays and are trialling Augmented Reality in the form of the ZappAr app. If you download this free app onto your smartphone and point it at the artefacts with a ZappAr sticker, you will see and hear extras that will bring the artefacts to life. Please come to our museum and try this out and let us know what you think of it!

Trustees get many requests from organisations to hold events and activities on Trust land, which is important for making Looe a vibrant town for both residents and visitors. However, deciding what we should say yes to is not always an easy task, so Trustees have revamped our policy on public performances on the seafront to make that decision process easier and encourage bands and choirs to make use of the facility. If you would be interested in performing on the seafront, please contact the office in writing with details of your request.

We hope the spell of good weather continues over the summer so everyone can enjoy Looe in bright sunshine.

RAFT RACE: The weather smiled on Looe on Sunday June 10th as bumper crowds turned out to watch this year’s Raft Race, organised by Looe Boat Owners Association for the benefit of Looe Lifeboats. This year’s fleet of 30 adult and junior entries set off in fine form from East Looe Beach, rounding the Banjo Pier to complete a circular course before finishing at the Lifeboat Station. Spectators on all sides offered the usual enthusiastic and very vocal encouragement to all participants, laggers as well as leaders. This, combined with the determination of all craft to finish the course made the whole day a very enjoyable one for all. Whilst everyone has been sweltering in this lovely summer, the Club’s race committee have been struggling to put on racing due very often to a complete lack of wind. The summer of 2018 will be remembered for the number of races cancelled. Recently we actually managed a Thursday and Saturday race in the same week; the first for some time.

When racing has been possible, up to 25 dinghies have made the start line with the largest fleets usually being the Mirrors and Enterprises.

Winners of the spring series of races were: Mirror – Tom McLaren and Emrys Franklin, Redwing – Colin Crabb and Alex Richardson, Laser – Chris Iles, and Enterprise – David and Chris Jackman, who received their awards at a special evening after sailing, which also included a barbecue and live music.

The junior sail training has been progressing well, with 48 youngsters registered this year.

The Club’s thanks go to Kevin Richards of Richards Builders Merchants for sponsoring the refurbishment of the Club’s Mirror dinghies to the tune of £1500; the work being carried out expertly by the Club’s Vice Commodore David Juleff.

Many thanks go to junior members from a bygone year: David Juleff, Steve Sargent and Brian Bowdler, plus several keen parents, for teaching the youngsters the ropes. It makes the future of sailing in Looe look very bright indeed.

Looe Scottish Country Dancers all met up for a grand picnic at Trenedden, the home of two of our dancing friends, to finish the summer dancing season. We had cocktail , a wonderful selection of salads and meats, and the largest bowl of strawberries I have ever seen.

A few weeks earlier we had to say goodbye to Mark and Lorna, two of our best dancers, as they are moving to Southern Spain. We wished them well on their grand adventure and presented them with gifts. They will be sorely missed as they were always so kind and helpful. It was nice to have Alicia from Spain who joined us for the month of June, and also to welcome Jay to our group.

We recommence our dancing on 10th September and if you are interested in joining us please get in touch with [email protected] 01503 264862. No partner needed and flat shoes. I do need to know in advance if you wish to come as I will have to prepare a special programme for you.

Branch News: As ever, the branch has been busy fund raising and planning ahead for the centenary of the end of WW1. A memorial concert is planned for the 9th November with the full Brass Band, the River Singers and a comedian. More information will be made available in the near future.

Armed Forces Day: We marked Armed Forces Day with a charity stall and cake stall in the Guildhall Rose Garden. The cake stall was a great success with buyers queuing even before the cakes had been put on display and, at the end of the day, only one cake and a crumble remained. The cake stall raised £317, so a big thanks to Annette Bryan, and her baking cohorts. The charity stall was also very successful, receiving over £562 in generous donations from the public. Thank you again for all those members that helped man the stalls on what was a very warm day.

Charity Auction: An auction, in aid of the Poppy Appeal, will be held on the 17th August in the Portbyhan Hotel, starting at 8pm. Entry to the auction is free, as is the buffet and music, kindly provided by the Portbyhan Hotel. Items kindly donated so far include a 6-month parking permit from the Harbour Commission, a pair of Looe Music Festival tickets, two tickets to go anywhere on the Great Western network, cases of Looe Valley cider, malt whisky and many more items. If anyone can provide an item for auction, then please contact Louis Portman on 01503 598432.

The other two memorials are at Chatham and Portsmouth, with an additional memorial built at Lowestoft, after World War 2, commemorating almost 2,400 men of the Royal Naval Patrol Services who have no grave but the sea.

The Plymouth memorial contains the names of 7,251 sailors of the World War I and 15,933 of the World War II. MAYOR’S REPORT

CONSULTATION FOR POST OFFICE IN BARBICAN: I hope that Councillors and residents take time to have an input into the consultation for a Post Office in the Spar Shop at Bay View Road, East Looe. It is important for the town and especially for the older people and businesses that use the Post Office for services.

MEETING WITH A RESIDENT: I have recently met with a local resident about her ambition to bring affordable mini homes to the area. It was interesting that people are thinking about how to help to our younger generation to buy and get affordable rented accommodation. Although the scheme is not fully worked up I am following it with great interest and await the next meeting.

JOINT MEETING WITH TOWN COUNCIL: We recently met with Liskeard Town Council over joint issues in our area and how we could support each other. There were a range of subjects, including the way we support each other for development of the Cattle Market site in Liskeard and the Outer Harbour in Looe. It is important that we support Liskeard as it has an impact on many of our residents who work and shop there. Their and our economic wellbeing are linked, and by working together we can help each other.

TEAM LOOE: I am a member of a new group called Team Looe. Its function is to clean up neglected areas of the town. So far the group has cleared Shutta Hill from the top at Sunrising to Dawes Lane and along Dawes Lane to the Well. Team Looe has been supported by local business REACT, and Jason Bond gives his workers’ time and labour for free. Yes it is hard work, but the results have made the areas look much better for residents and visitors. This group links especially well with a meeting with the and the Cormac Volunteers which allows residents to clear areas under their insurance and they take away the green waste. It also links with the litter picking supported by Clean Cornwall. This is our town and we should take pride in it.

SARDINE FACTORY: Attending the recent opening of the Sardine Factory as and Harbour Commissioner I believe that this new building will be an asset to the town. The original building was in a very poor state of repair with no foundations and was in danger of falling down. Those involved in the replacement building: Tina Hicks, Colin Crabb, Ben Crabb, Matt Dixon and Steve Huckstep and the local trades and harbour staff, should be proud of their achievement, because this building is set for another 100 years of use by the town. If you have not visited, please do so. OTHER EVENTS AND MEETINGS: I was invited to Cornish Orchards, who have added another new cider to their range of drinks. I had the opportunity whilst I was there to have a tour of the farm and factory, which was very interesting and good to see a local company grow.

The Model Boat Club held their annual event and other clubs from Devon and Cornwall came along to support them. Some of the models are fantastic replicas of many different classes of from to Navy. The Millpool allows the club to have calm, safe waters for this event.

The Head Teacher of the Academy School has left and I have met the Deputy Head who is dealing with the day-to-day running of the school until a new head is in post. I am assured that there is stability in the school in this transitional period and I await the formal process to appoint a new head teacher.

The Football Club held a tournament over the weekend of 7th/8th July with 61 teams involved on the Saturday and 51 teams on the Sunday. This was a very busy tournament and from talking to many of the parents, managers and players, one that they enjoyed and will be returning to next year. It is good that the Club is raising money to build the new club house and level the pitch. They need support for this ambition and I am sure that their hard work will pay off and the Club will progress.

I have attended two Civic Sundays at and Liskeard, the Lions Tea Dance at the Millpool and a meeting on Plastic Free Looe and Liskeard.

Councillor Armand Toms Mayor of Looe

PUBLIC CONVENIENCES: Looe Town Council are very pleased to have received the following comment on 17th June 2018 from a visitor to Looe:

“Today I visited Looe and to my amazement the public toilets located next to the beach were immaculate. This is a real credit to Looe Town Council as the majority of public toilets are a disgrace. Well done to all involved”.

A lot of hard work and expense goes into cleaning and maintaining the town’s public convenience facilities by our team, the cost is in excess of £96,000 per year and it is very nice to receive such comments.

We do not charge for these facilities as we consider this to be a major contribution to tourism in Looe, as we also promote tourism through our Tourist Information Centre. We are committed to maintaining the current standards and all credit should go to our team of cleaners.

MARINERS GARDEN: We are very pleased that the works to the river wall have now been completed and all construction equipment has now been removed. Work- ing with Looe in Bloom ladies we will be replanting flowers shortly and replacing a tree that had been removed. We are working hard to return the garden to a quiet and peaceful area to sit and contemplate or just enjoy the view. We would like to thank everyone involved in the urgent repairs.

LOOE MUSIC FESTIVAL SUMMER UPDATE

With the summer season under way and the sun beaming down on us, planning for the eighth LMF is already in full swing. The line-up is complete, posters are popping up around town and we’ve been working hard on making sure LMF2018 is the best yet.

Once again, we’re expecting over 200 volunteers to help us deliver the event. Roles range from box office staff and stewards to site construction with volunteers working 8 hours in return for a 3-day festival ticket. The scheme is hugely popular and offers locals the opportunity to get involved and play a vital role during the LMF weekend. Spaces are limited but it’s not too late to get signed up, just head to looemusic.co.uk/volunteer and complete the form linked to the page.

We are also excited to share our latest funding news. The LMF Charitable Trust, which delivers the annual Festival, has received investment from the Arts Impact Fund. The charity was established in 2010 to support the social, economic and cultural regeneration of Looe and has delivered an estimated economic impact of £18m between 2012-2016. This most recent funding will be used to develop our sustainability, increase our resilience and support our growth. We’d like to thank everyone for their continued support and we look forward to working with the AIF to further increase our social impact.

If you haven’t seen our promotional video, it’s worth a watch. Featuring Looe’s very own World Champion Gig Rowers alongside stars Peter Ferdinando (award-winning Hyena and critically acclaimed Tony) as the Warrior, and Granville Saxton (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Poirot and The Eagle) as the Seer. The film encourages everyone to GO WEST, release their inner Viking and gather on Looe beach this September for LMF2018. Head to our Facebook page to see it for yourself.

With the school holidays just around the corner, keep an eye out for our pop-up shop opening at the seafront. Come and say hi and if you prefer to buy your LMF ticket in person the shop will be our local box office for this year.

As the countdown to September begins, the office is piled high with promotional materials, if you can help spread the Looe love by taking posters, beer mats and flyers with you on your travels then please get in touch with us via [email protected].

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support and we look forward to gathering with you on Looe beach in September.

Tickets and table bookings open at the Sail Loft in September.

SUSPECTED SPIES & BRAWLING MAIDS IN THE OLD GUILDHALL MUSEUM!! In 1587, Queen Elizabeth I granted East Looe a Charter which, simply put, allowed the townsfolk and their appointed representatives (the Mayor & Burgesses) to create bye-laws, own land, set taxes and levies at the port and markets, and hold a Magistrates Court every third Monday. (West Looe was granted theirs in 1574).This was good news for Looe; the Guildhall (built in 1450) was given an upgrade and the magistrates bench we see today was installed. Not such good news for some was the building of a holding cell! Much of the business conducted by the newly formed Corporation was mundane day-to-day issues: neighbour disputes, trespass, debts, etc. There were plenty of incidents though to make us today raise an eyebrow, chuckle and be glad not to have lived back then... We all enjoy socialising with friends, but in 1700 a bye-law was passed stating that every Saturday night the Mayor ad his constable visit ALL the to ensure everything is well! If you were found in the pub on a Sunday, when you were meant to be in church, there was a fine, and anyone, or their children, misbehaving in church, was also fined. In 1673, Richard Scadgell got angry during court and called the jury "a company of bottle heads". Mr Carter's maid and Mrs Coade's servant were tried for "misconduct" (meaning a brawl) in 1696 and Mr Wilshman was tried for making Thomasine Gaich fearful "that he would do her some bodily harm". People were fined for feeding hogs at their doors and not tying up their horses properly. In 1674, Gatred Boulger had 14 days to repair her very dangerous house and Elizabeth Hearle was in court in 1677 for leaving a boat "very dangerous to children". The Corporation was often reprimanded for not maintaining the quays and town lands or neglecting to paint St. Mary's tower white for navigation purposes. During 1696, French prisoners were held in the cell and in 1778 Captain John Butty was locked up accused of being a spy. On Christmas Eve 1844, extra constables were paid to stop a threatened prison rescue! Richard Bird, a dangerous vagrant, was whipped out of town in 1717 and Diana Skinner was paid to leave as she was "very green with smallpox and people were very afraid". Money was given to charitable cases such as shipwrecked mariners, injured soldiers and in 1670 to a married couple who had lost all their goods living in Ireland. Punishments were harsh for seemingly trivial matters including the stocks and pillory, or being whipped, and fines were a way of earning revenue for town maintenance. If you come to visit the museum today the volunteers promise to let you out unharmed but there is the 1732 bye-law stating all visitors must...... enjoy themselves! Penny McHugh - Museum Volunteer LOOE OLD GUILDHALL MUSEUM AND GAOL Trafalgar Night is on 20th October, 7pm at the Sail Loft.

We all enjoy socialising with friends, but in 1700 a bye-law was passed stating that every Saturday night the Mayor ad his constable visit ALL the pubs to ensure everything is well! Hi, I’m Lisa, mum of Paige and Kai I have always loved working with children and when I was first approached a few years ago to lead classes for another franchisee, I jumped at the chance. I could instantly see how the classes benefited children (and their grown ups too!) I fell in love with the classes and thoroughly enjoyed running the sessions. The sessions sparked my fascination in finding out more about child development, particularly in the early years. So I left Hartbeeps temporarily and I went on to gain my level 3 Diploma in Early Years with a view to returning to Hartbeeps in the future. Now my children are both at school and I am ready to embark on the next stage Taking you and your little ones on a sound journey with age appropriate props, wonderful puppet characters, of my career and am privileged to have singing, Makaton signing, beautiful lighting effects and the opportunity to own my own a lovely playtime for you to enjoy together.
