The reason behind taking those “Don’t let the fear of chances is because you never know for certain striking out, keep you what the outcome will be. When thinking about from playing the this, keep in mind what you would regret game.” more...Failing or possibly giving up the chance to succeed or obtain whatever it may be.

Message From Professor Klingler

Dear Menlo Students/Staff/Faculty:

The Menlo College Accounting Club will be again offering free income tax return preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sponsored by the United Way and the IRS. The VITA program provides an opportunity for low/middle income taxpayers (generally those with incomes less than $52,000) to have their taxes prepared for free by well- trained and certified preparers. All of our student volunteers have undergone 24 hours of training and had to pass a series of rigorous exams in order to be able to volunteer.

Last year’s inaugural program was quite a success as we prepared returns for 60 clients who received over $27,000 in refunds. For this year, we have doubled the amount of volunteers from 11 to 22 and, therefore, are doubling our hours of operation. There are plenty of opportunities for Menlo students and other qualifying taxpayers to come have their taxes prepared and (hopefully) get their refund.

A reminder to all students who took Personal Finance at Menlo…if you receive a W-2 for a job you had in 2013 you may very well be entitled to a refund for some or all of the taxes you had withheld from your wages. Don’t just assume you do not need to file because you didn’t make that much. If too much tax was withheld, you should get that back as a refund. You need to file to do that.

The dates we will offer the services are as follows: Tuesday Feb 11 6-9 pm Brawner 401/402 Thursday, Feb 20 6-9 pm Brawner 405 Tuesday, Feb 25 6-9 pm Brawner 401/402 Thursday, Mar 6 6-9 pm Brawner 401/402 Saturday, Mar 22 10am – 2pm Brawner 405 Tuesday, Mar 25 6-9 pm Brawner 405 Thursday, Apr 3 6-9 pm Brawner 401/402 Saturday, Apr 12 10am – 2pm Brawner 405

Please don’t wait until the last few sessions to have your taxes prepared as those tend to be very busy sessions! Also, arrive early so you can be the first to be served with no wait.

Also….please pass this onto anyone you know who may qualify for this service (friends, siblings, etc.). We would like to help as many taxpayers as possible!

We hope to see you this year at our site! If you come, please make sure to bring your social security card, a photo ID and all necessary paperwork (W-2s, 1098-T, etc.)

A Message from the Peer Counselors

Love has been an ongoing theme in all types of media. Classics like the story of Romeo and Juliet remind us that love is a different type of emotion. Love goes beyond happiness and excitement. However, not all relationships lead to the same kind of love. According to Psychologist Robert Sternberg, all types of loves can be explained with different combinations of passion, intimacy, and commitment. Let me further explain:

Passionate love: This type of love is often described as infatuation. Sternberg described passionate love as “giddy, and intense with longing, the lovebird’s yearning heart.”

While passionate love gives off great excitement, when the romantic fulfillment is not return, the person may feel sadness and despair.

Intimate love: As the name describes, this type of love is based on warmth, closeness and connectedness.

The negative side to intimate love is that it lacks passion and it feels more of a liking and friendship relationship.

Committed love: This is the kind of love that is based solely on commitment of being together. We can think of this love as the love seen our grandparents where they stay together until death, and through good and bad (even if they hate each other).

The problem with this relationship is that it is an empty type of love. The passion and intimacy are both are missing.

So what is the best kind of love? According to Sternberg, the best king of love is called “consummate love” and it is a mixture of intimacy, passion, and commitment. However, relationships vary and some people make their relationships work with any of the above or a combination. As you can see in the diagram, there are names for all the possible combinations. Look back or to your current relationship and ask yourself, what kind of relationship do I have/had? This might explain aspects of your relationship that you never thought about.

As always, the Peer Counseling office is located at the back of the ASC building. Come give us a visit, we would be happy to talk about your love combination or any other problem you might have
