The intention was that this would give another 15-20 years of life to the burner. 3 In 2015, it was suggested that there was an electrical fault and the burner was taken out of service with the wire being cut between the wall and the thermostat in the main hall and the burner unit. 4 The previous CDA had identified a project to upgrade the windows, paint the interior, install a zip and replace the LED lights. This was costed at approximately $40,000. 5 Subsequent to that decision being made the former Ohai Bowling Club building was gifted back to the community of Ohai and a decision was made to consult with the wider community about the comparative cost of upgrading and maintaining the Bowling Club and the Hall with a view to only keeping one building for use by the community. 6 In February 2018, at the first informal meeting of the new Ohai Community Development Area Subcommittee, the hall heating was identified as being a priority project for the Subcommittee and staff were requested to investigate alternative heating options.

  • FARMING in SOUTHLAND by A
FARMING IN SOUTHLAND By A. Stuart, Asst. Fields Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, Dunedin. This paper is confined to a discussion on farming in two counties, Southland and ‘Wallace. In this territory is comprised some 5,000 square miles of occupied land, which represents ‘7.8 per cent. of the Dominion total. In the Southland County there are 4,241 holdings averaging 476 acres, and in Wallace 1,514 averaging 793 acres. The combined figure of 5,755 holdings gives an indication of the number of farmers in the two counties. EARLY HISTORY Apart from sealers and whalers there was no settlement in Southland until about 1856, some three years after the purchase of Murihiku (as it was then called) from the Maoris. It was farmed in large blocks for wool by squatters, and subsequently large-scale oat cropping was practised in the Centre Bush and Riversdale areas. In 1882, the first cheese factory was erected at Edendale, lar, gely under the direction and encouragement of Mr Thomas Brydone, a super- intendent of the Australian and New Zealand Land Company. With the development of dairying, liming, refrigeration, and transport facilities, closer settle- ment followed in the wake of the subdivision of the large pastoral runs, and farming operations became more diversified. KIND OF FARMING PRACTISED Sheep farming has ever been the main Southland industry, but of recent years greater reliance has been placed on fat lamb production than on wool. Nevertheless an extremely uniform type of Crossbred Romney ewe has been maintained by farmers for re- placement purposes and for crossing with the South- down ram for fat lamb.

22 October 2020 Southland trail notes Contents • Mararoa River Track • Tākitimu Track • Birchwood to Merrivale • Longwood Forest Track • Long Hilly Track • Tīhaka Beach Track • Oreti Beach Track • Invercargill to Bluff Mararoa River Track Route Trampers continuing on from the Mavora Walkway can walk south down and around the North Mavora Lake shore to the swingbridge across the Mararoa River at the lake’s outlet. From here the track is marked and sign-posted. It stays west of but proximate to the Mararoa River and then South Mavora Lake to this lake’s outlet where another swingbridge provides an alternative access point from Mavora Lakes Road. Beyond this swingbridge, the track continues down the true right side of the Mararoa River to a third and final swing bridge. Along the way a careful assessment is required: if the Mararoa River can be forded safely then Te Araroa Trampers can continue down the track on the true right side to the Kiwi Burn then either divert 1.5km to the Kiwi Burn Hut, or ford the Mararoa River and continue south on the true left bank. If the Mararoa is not fordable then Te Araroa trampers must cross the final swingbridge. Trampers can then continue down the true left bank on the riverside of the fence and, after 3km, rejoin the Te Araroa opposite the Kiwi Burn confluence. 1 Below the Kiwi Burn confluence, Te Araroa is marked with poles down the Mararoa’s true left bank. This is on the riverside of the fence all the way down to Wash Creek, some 16km distant.
