Consequently, this has led to rejection, isolation and discrimination hindering their psychological and emotional development.

The Foundation shall endeavor to eliminate discrimination and stigma against people with disability in chess so that they fully participate. The Foundation shall also advocate for provision of user friendly, chess facilities and equipment.

WHY SCHOOLS SHOULD TEACH CHESS TO LEARNERS

1. Chess is a game for people of all ages. You can learn to play at any age and in chess, unlike in many other sports, you don’t even have to retire. Age is no factor also when you settle down to playing an opponent. You can play against the old and the old can play the young!

2. Chess improves memory. Chess theory is complicated and to be good at it you will need to memorize some openings and remember the tree and its branches of variations. You will also need to recognize the patterns as it transposes to the next opening trees

3. Chess improves concentration. During the game you are focused on only one main goal – to checkmate your opponent and emerge the winner!

4. Chess develops logical thinking. Chess requires some understanding of logical approach from both short-term (tactical) and long-term (strategic) objectives.

5. Chess develops attention. In many cases during games between children and amateurs, attention to details at all times for long spells leads to rewards. Paying no attention you immediately miss out.

6. Chess promotes imagination. Since you will need to think ahead, the future of your action must be composed. Visualization, end-results and anticipation make a good player.

7. Chess manifests creativity. While memory and rote learning will get you far, survival in a myriad of possibilities and new ways require

5 your own inventiveness if you are to survive. You will enjoy being creative as you escape a sticky situation.

8. Chess requires that you be cunning. Given many real life dramatic challenges, you find some trickery helpful whether it’s to decoy the opponent or gambit a pawn for an ulterior motive.

9. Chess teaches independence. You are forced to make important decisions influenced by your own judgment. In some cases they impact on personal score, for the team or for the country.

10. Chess inspires self-motivation. It encourages the search for the best move, the best plan, and the most beautiful combination out of an endless litany of possibilities. It encourages the everlasting pursuit towards progress, never dull; highly fun, but covertly and overtly educational.

11. Fantasy versus Reality. Those who are intelligent juggle the two concepts with expert comprehension. The OBE insists that these be taught at elementary level with application. Chess is a classical example that matures the mind to understand movies and TV stories for what they are, entertainment.

12. Chess and science. Like science, in chess you will need to hypothesize. A scientific way of thinking will be needed as you generate numerous variations in your mind. You then will explore each possibility, contrasting new versus established ideas. Predict their outcomes and interpret surprising revelations in this abstract view. Test it or sometimes consider taking it as a risk/chance.

13. Chess and technology. What is involved in the quiet thinking mind of a chess player? Like a computer, the brain is taking in information process it and given the many options and choices, a process of elimination triggers in. The brain they say is a computer; well there is the proof. From this, man invented computer-playing machines.

14. Chess and Art. Chess is a beautiful and artistic. In many chess columns of newspapers artistic picturesque chess puzzles appear. These juggle the mind bringing joy to the engaged party. These are mostly developed for that amusement value and have no sequential link to chess. They are called studies or quizzes.

6 15. Chess and culture. The fact that you can play chess with a total stranger even without understanding their neither language nor culture proves that it fosters social interaction that leads to tolerance and understanding. In Russia chess is a culture, it is a way of life. In Zambia they’re two distinct sporting culture cricket is followed and played by largely the Asian people and by the same token football by blacks.

16. Chess demonstrates that hard work is rewarded. The more you study and practice, the better you become. You will be ready to learn from your mistakes. The Cuban Grandmaster Raul Casablanca, who was world chess champion once said: “ You may learn more from a lost game than the one you win, that’s life”

17. Chess is mental gymnastics. The more you lift weights, the more muscles you develop. Similarly, the more you play chess the more you grow dendrites. Dendrites are the muscles in your brain so said Tony Buzan, author and educational brain specialist from the UK.

18. Chess is life. Mistakes are punishable and lead to a loss and good skill and all its virtues are rewarded. Think ahead, predict and foresee the consequences of your actions. Chess teaches you to look both ways before you cross the street.

Chess is a game of imagination and strategy, one that provides rules, order and opportunities for intellectual growth. An effective educational tool at all levels of academic achievement, chess teaches students to think logically and take responsibility for their actions and consequences.

MARKETING PLAN

Chess academy business is a newly emerging venture with very little competitors in Zambia hence the Zambian Chess Foundation will concentrate very much in targeting government, private schools and the vulnerable as strategic business ratio segments by developing specific products best suited with demand patterns prevailing in all these institutions.

MARKET SEGMENT

Chess game is not aggregate hence the need to adopt a product mix in which Zambian Chess Foundation will segment the market into three categories learners, non learners and advanced learners

7 MARKET STRATEGIES

The Foundation will employ a multi-media penetration marketing strategy in which massive publicity and advertising using print media and electronic media will be used to disseminate product awareness and availability to the target market further using latest art technology. The foundation will also launch a website where its products and services can be easily accessed on the internet. The foundation will also partner with NGO’s working in various activities such as HIV and AIDS mitigation as a tool to facilitate the work of NGO/s outlined above.

The foundation shall further promote equal access to better education through provision of educational scholarships to deserving chess players as one way of promoting the sport in schools.

As a long term penetration strategy, the foundation will open permanent chess centre’s in major provincial centre’s fully equipped with latest art of training sports equipment and well skilled coaching staff.

FIDE Trainers’ Commission (TRG)

14.09.2017

Attention: State Secretary Miss Janica Kostelic Central State Office for Sport Savska Cesta 28, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia

Subject: FIDE-TRG Trainer Titles

Dear Miss Kostelic,

We are addressing you on behalf of FIDE (World Chess Federation) Trainers’ Commission regarding the problem with nistrification of the FIDE trainers’ diplomas & titles in Croatia.

Chess in Croatia has rich and long tradition (even in the Cote of arms there is a chess board!) with many great results. Those results were connected with good players, but also with experienced trainers.

Long time ago FIDE has established an international Trainers’ System which is recognised in a vast number of countries around the world. Some of the titles’ seminars where even organised in Croatia recently.

Unfortunately we have been informed that FIDE trainers’ diplomas & titles are not recognised in Croatia and that well-known trainers cannot coach/train with young players which will stop their progress and the development of youth in Croatia in general.

We kindly ask you to reconsider the decision of FIDE trainers’ diplomas & titles nistrification.

With kind regards,

The Chairman The Secretary Adrian Mikhalchishin Efstratios Grivas
