1859 BALLOON VOYAGE GO EXPLORING

1859 Balloon Voyage. Step into 1859 Lafayette, Ind., and experience the story of aeronaut John Wise’s first successful airmail flight in the U.S. You can fly more than 370 feet into the air in a tethered, helium-filled balloon. The experience is dependent on weather and requires tickets.

William Conner House. Explore a treasured piece of Indiana history, built in 1823 and reimagined in 2016. Join the Conner family on their journey through Indiana’s early years in this interactive house, where hands-on activities and materials tell stories about life in 1825. Then, stroll through the nearby heirloom gardens and learn about weaving and textile arts at the Loom House.

Animal Encounters. Get up close and interact with your favorite farm friends. Ask our animal specialists about our historical breeds of livestock, how our animals are cared for year-round on our grounds, and how Conner Prairie plays an important role in preserving these rare breeds.

Lenape Indian Camp. Explore the life, culture, and relationship between the Lenape Indians and American fur traders in 1816 when Indiana became a state. Negotiate a deal at the trading post, say hello in Lenape, and discover who had power in the Turtle Clan. You might also learn how to throw a tomahawk, tan hides, or fire a flintlock rifle.

1836 Prairietown. Step back in time to a bustling pioneer town where the people, animals, objects, buildings, and daily routines are just as they were in the 19th century. Pick up an achievement card at the Outfitter’s cart and become a herdsman, kitchen helper, sheri®, or merchant. Play games, learn a trade, and help residents with chores.

Create.Connect. Venture indoors and play with wind while trying to keep an aircraft aloft. Emulate industrious by designing your own invention in the 1950s patent o¯ce. Challenge yourself by putting wind to work by building a real windmill. Discover how all these science, technology, engineering, and math innovations have created our modern day Indiana and paved our future. This project was made possible in part by the National Science Foundation. 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana. Enter the southern Indiana town of Dupont following a raid by Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan and his cavalry. Experience life on the northern home front and meet its citizens before deciding if you would enlist in the Army to defend your hometown. This project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor.

River Crossing. Explore an indoor-outdoor playscape for kids of all ages and their grown-ups. Take a river journey under a covered bridge that leads you outdoors to find the Alice Dean at the dock in town. Climb aboard, or try your hand at fishing, piloting a boat down our water table, or putting out a fire with water cannons. Make a splash and cool o® with our exciting splash pad. This historically-themed play area features opportunities to engage your imagination around every corner. Opens May 25.

Treetop Outpost. Engage with nature as you explore a 4-story treehouse or unleash your wild side and climb around our one of a kind Fort play structure! Dig for buried artifacts from the past, build with your imagination, create art with natural materials, and perform music. Take in the incredible view of the or learn about the history and ecology of the waterway at our River Lookout. Grab a seat in the Treetop Classroom and listen to nature chats, performances, and that highlight the richness of the natural world around us. The nearby Treetop Workshop o®ers unique making opportunities and provides adventure backpacks for the Nature Walk so you’ll have all the tools you need to take a closer look at the plants and animals that call this land home and have for almost 200 years.

Makesmith™ Workshop. Roll up your sleeves and express your creativity in our year-round exhibit Makesmith™ Workshop, where visitors of all ages can tinker with real tools and materials. Explore textiles, wood, metal, and more while getting a hands-on experience of what our historic tradespeople do every day. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of and Library Services.

Discovery Station. Children ages 8 and younger can play, explore, and build their very own hideaways. They can climb up a tree-like structure, read inside a book hive, pretend to be a farmer or storekeeper, listen to stories, or dress up as a critter. Toddlers and crawlers have a tot-friendly space just for them. In Craft Corner, young artists can experiment with a variety of materials to create awesome art and cool crafts.

Join the Conner Prairie Alliance or Horizon Council. The Conner Prairie Alliance has raised more than $1.3 million to support the museum. Founded in 1982, the Alliance is a vibrant and dynamic group of women who are passionate about the future of Conner Prairie. The organization operates and sta®s the Apple Store at Conner Prairie, a fall market. Each September and October, thousands of customers purchase hand-dipped caramel apples, apple cider slushies, other fall foods, and a variety of seasonal gifts at the Apple Store at Conner Prairie. In addition to work done on behalf of the museum, Alliance members have the opportunity to participate in special interest groups, attend Alliance-only events, build friendships, and interact with museum leadership.

The Conner Prairie Horizon Council is an energetic young professionals group comprised of volunteers (ages 21–40) who share ideas, engage in strategic planning, fundraise, and take part in special events. Their voices are heard and perspectives captured as they help envision the Conner Prairie of the future. Horizon Council members dedicate their time and e®ort in several ways to shape Conner Prairie’s future. They engage in fundraising and organizing events like History on Tap and Holiday Cheers and are public advocates for Conner Prairie by identifying, connecting, and cultivating friends and associates as future Horizon Council members.
