  • Van Avermaet, Gerrans, Matthews, Wellens and Degenkolb Headline an Impressive Field at the Grands Prix Cyclistes De Québec Et De Montréal 2018
PRESS RELEASE| For immediate release Van Avermaet, Gerrans, Matthews, Wellens and Degenkolb headline an impressive field at the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal 2018 Montréal, August 23, 2018 – Now in their ninth editions, the Grand Prix Cyclistes de Québec et Montréal (GPCQM) are once again asserting their impressive pedigree on the UCI WorldTour calendar, the top tier of international road cycling. The challenging courses, deep field of competitors with a large number of titles won, suspense-filled racing, quality of organization, and the friendly hospitality of Québec have made these races choice stops on the tour that all riders aspire to win. With just two weeks to go before race weekend, the 18 UCI WorldTeams and three wild-card teams (Israel Cycling Academy, Rally Cycling and Team Canada) have announced which riders they are sending to the races, and once again this year each has entered a squad of first-rate competitors well suited to the spectacular parcours in Québec City (sept. 7) and Montréal (sept. 9). The peloton of 147 riders, representing 28 countries, includes skilled road warriors like Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), the reigning Olympic Champion, who also held the Yellow Jersey for eight days at this year’s Tour de France, won the Montréal GP in 2016, and has been on the podium in Québec City four times since 2012. “I love these two races; every year they’re among my main end-of-season challenges,” says the Classics specialist from Belgium, who will face tough opposition from several riders who are well versed in the traps of both city courses.

  • How Well Do You Know the 2019 UCI Points Rankings?
The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling How Wellhttps://www.theouterline.com Do You Know the 2019 UCI Points Rankings? The men’s WorldTour bike racing season is almost over, and so it’s time to take a look at the formal grading system which most fans routinely ignore all the rest of the year: the UCI points ranking. But first, a quick pop quiz for all those who consider themselves to be avid followers or students of pro cycling (answers below): Can you name the only WorldTour team with two riders in the top-10 of the men’s UCI rider points ranking? No surprise that rising superstars Primož Rogli? and Julian Alaphilippe rank number 1 and 2. But, who do you think ranks third amongst the top riders – right in front of Tour de France phenom Egan Bernal, crafty veteran Alejandro Valverde (himself a multiple times winner of the points ranking) and veteran hard man Greg van Avermaet? Where do you think Team Ineos, the team with the largest budget, and a roster so stacked with talent that many thought they were threatening to “ruin” the sport, ranks in the final UCI team standings? And in the nations points ranking, what country do you think sits in 26th spot, just behind Eritrea, a small country in the horn of Africa with a population of under five million? If you score two or higher, consider yourself an insightful and expert pro cycling fan. OK, here are the answers. The German team Bora-Hansgrohe – not a team which got a lot of ink in the cycling media this year – had both Pascal Ackerman and Peter Sagan in the top-10, ranked 7th and 10th respectively.

With two defeats in Pool E, they were on the verge of an exit. But after beating Brazilians fifth seeds Alison Cerutti and Alvarao Filho in straight sets, they advanced to the Lucky Losers bracket in which they handed a straight-set loss to Chinese Peng Gao and Yang Li. This victory advanced them to the first eliminator against Brazilians world champs and Olympic medallists Evandro Goncalves and Bruno Oscar Schmidt. Both the Qataris battled hard against the second seeds and lost 19-21, 19-21 in a 47-minute thriller. • EXCLUSIVE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE SAMPLE FOREWORD by Ned Boulting
EXCLUSIVE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE SAMPLE FOREWORD by Ned Boulting Dear Road Book Reader, April without my annual trip from pillar to post within the confines of God’s Own County is not really April. I will miss this race more acutely than almost any other on the calendar. In its five iterations it has given us wind, hale, snow, rain, bright sunshine and endless drama often within the time it takes to say “Sutton Bank” or “Hebden Bridge”. Last year’s race was a good case in point, and it started with the sight of Harry Tanfield working on the front of the peloton to catch the break, in an interesting role reversal from 2018, when of course he was the one escaping to victory. Jesper Asselman’s surprise win on stage one was just a prelude to some masterful displays from both the men and the women, with Marianne Vos delivering a display of total control and awe onto the famous Scarborough seafront finish at its very windiest. It absolutely howled. Alexander Kamp won the men’s race and took the race lead into the final stage. But Team Ineos cracked it again, Chris Lawless well served by Chris Froome, against which even the mighty defending champion Greg van Avermaet was powerless. For Lawless, it was his biggest ever win. But the winner, once again, was the county. It turned out with passion, knowledge, fervour and loyalty to a race it has made its own. 2019, like all the years that went before, was a true Yorkshire gem. I hope beyond hope we all will return again.
