He was involved in the insurrection of 1848 which erupted in Naples. After his death, he was labelled as one of the warrior artists of Italy. Is this reflected in the painting we are contemplating—a battle? The landscape is desert, not a slice of green to be seen. Christ seems to be in a completely relaxed mode, an attitude of prayer, engrossed in conversation with his Father. Fasting has not emaciated him. He seems completely in control. MARY MAGDALENE: A MISUNDERSTOOD BIOGRAPHY – ‘Six Men & Six Women’ Series You know if you are feeling tired this morning, you should really appreciate the crew who were here at 8:00 this morning. If I have ever been teaching and felt like I needed to inject an audience with something, I just witnessed it. I mean they were tired, but they were troopers for coming out and being a part of the early service. I know that you guys are excited today because it is one of those days where we will just break our New Year commitments as we begin to go off the deep end. I mean we will be eating really well today, since it is Easter, and now we are hosed. It just goes awry from here on. So I hope you have a good Easter Sunday with good fellowship. And I hope that this morning you will sense something from God’s word that you can take away from the message that will be an encouragement to you. Let me start off with a story. Several years ago, I was serving as an associate pastor in Conway, Arkansas at Celebration Church. It was a new church, and I was there on staff. I came in one Sunday morning, and I saw my bride getting a cup of coffee. So I went up behind her and began to give her a massage on her shoulders. But then she turned around, and lo and behold, it wasn’t my wife! I was horrified in that moment. What made it even worse was she was a first time guest to our church and I never saw that lady again. -

Series: The Gospel of Mark "Calming the Storm" # 16 Mark 4:35-41 4-30-17 Sun AM Our hearts have been stirred by 5 revival messages, now its time to get back to the teaching of God's Word to equip and mature saints. The miracle in this passage is not having Jesus in your boat of life and everything will be okay. This passage is about the Creator working in our lives. Two background thoughts- 1. The teaching of Jesus. “The same day” (v. 35) refers to the day on which Jesus gave the “parables of the kingdom” (4:3-24). He had been teaching His disciples the Word and now He would give them a practical test to see how much they had really learned. The hearing of God’s Word is intended to produce faith and faith must always be tested. It is not enough for us merely to learn a lesson or be able to repeat a teaching. We must also be able to practice that lesson by faith, and that is one reason why God permits trials to come to our lives. 2. The miracles of Jesus. Jesus performed miracles to display his power over creation, demons, diseases, and death. This miracles in our text is another opportunity in which the supernatural power of Jesus was displayed. The disciples knew of His divine power yet they were not fully prepared for his display of omnipotence over his creation. TT- Jesus leads the Disciples into a storm as a test of faith and we learn two simple truths about storms. -

It is organized around two nodal questions: Can life be prolonged? Should it be prolonged? The project hinges upon Francis Bacon (1561-1626), for whom the prolongation of life in the sense of a longer human lifespan serves as the loftiest goal of modern experimental science. Addressing the first question, Part One illustrates the texture and diversity of early modern theories of senescence and medical treatments against the ―disease‖ of old age promoted by Galen, Avicenna, medieval theologians, Jean Fernel, Marsilio Ficino, and Paracelsus. Part Two then demonstrates that Bacon‘s theory of senescence and corresponding therapies nevertheless differ from those of his predecessors and contemporaries in three regards: their attempt to isolate senescence from disease, their postulation of senescence as a process based on universal structures and actions of matter, and their deferral to further experiment for elucidation. -

The voice from the Father declared the close relation of Christ to His Infinite Majesty: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." The mission of Christ was soon to begin. But He must first withdraw from the busy scenes of life to a desolate wilderness for the express purpose of bearing the threefold test of temptation in behalf of those He had come to redeem. -

70. The Gospel of John—8:12-24 “The Light of the World” Pt.3 (5/5/19) In our study in John’s gospel we are currently in chapter 8 where we came across one of the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus that John built his gospel around. Every time Jesus called Himself “I AM”, He was declaring that He was the voice from the burning bush (Exodus 3:13-14) where God identified Himself to Moses as the great ‘I AM’. And so, as we study John 8, understand that the whole chapter is built around Jesus’ declaration of divinity—which led to a heated confrontation between Himself and His enemies. II. The Heated Confrontation—v.12-59 A. Round One—Light and Darkness (v.12–20) John 8:12 (NKJV) 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." And so, this very heated confrontation started with Jesus declaring Himself to be Yahweh (the great I AM) and Messiah—and ended with His enemies picking up stones to kill Him (v.59). The ‘them’ in verse 12 refers to the scribes and Pharisees (v.3)—the ‘scholars’ of Judaism. When Jesus called Himself “the light of the world”—it would have immediately reminded them that Yahweh was likened to ‘light’ in their Scriptures many times (Psalm 27:1; 84:11). 1 And so, when Jesus proclaimed, “I AM—the light of the world”—He was claiming to be the God of Israel—the radiant Shekinah Glory! It was the Shekinah Glory (presence of God in the form of a pillar of fire by night) that was the light that lit their ancestor’s way thru the darkness of the wilderness for those forty years before entering the Promised Land. -

A Costly Pursuit • Every year the slopes of Mount Everest o are littered with the dead bodies § of failed climbers. • The effort to climb the world’s highest mountain o is costly, all-consuming, and dangerous. • At Everest's highest point, o you are breathing in a third § of the amount of oxygen • you would normally breathe • due to the atmospheric pressure. • But it’s not the lack of oxygen that kills. o Avalanches are the foremost cause of death, § followed by falls. o Winds on the mountain § have been recorded • at more than 200mph. • At least one person has died on Everest o every year since 1969, § except in 1977. • The safest year on Everest was 1993, o when 129 reached the summit § and eight died. § To put that in perspective, • 1 out of every 16 people o who attempted the climb § died in the process. • The deadliest year for climbers of Everest o was 1996, when 15 died. § At that point an average • of 1 in 4 who attempted the climb o died before they reached the top. -
