He describes, analyzes, and criticizes the primary ways American Christians, especially Protestants, have understood and exercised a role in public life, or what is commonly referred to as “culture.” He especially focuses on how efforts to change or transform society have failed to yield their intended results for both theological and sociological reasons. However, the analysis that has seldom been provided which helps account for the apparent failures to impact the culture is a critical analysis of evangelical views of culture, and especially the unique language associated with those views. Such an analysis will best position the contemporary church to understand and approach cultural pursuits in a manner consistent with its theology and practical aims in specific cultural contexts. This dissertation shows that language is a profoundly formative dimension of cultural engagement. The shifting “grammars” of cultural engagement within evangelical thought substantiate and illustrate this claim, even though not all of these proposals are exclusively or explicitly focused on the rhetorical aspects of this subject. Attention to the language used in explaining cultural engagement will help identify the potential theological and practical ambiguities associated with various models of engagement. Such models can be described as grammars, a linguistic concept for explaining and directing the role of Christians in the world. While the transformationalist approach to cultural engagement is still espoused by many evangelicals, new grammars of engagement have emerged, indicating that older grammars have been found to be inadequate. Studying these developments reveals the limits of any single, comprehensive grammar of cultural engagement in a post-Christian context. vii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Having arrived at the completion of this dissertation is humbling in many respects. It is the product of many days, weeks, and months of reading, conversation, reflection, writing, and rewriting. Moreover, it is the byproduct of many years of reflection on the topic of cultural engagement. I have marveled to discover how God has a way of weaving together conversation partners and intellectual curiosities, both of which have given profound shape to the material presented here. Drs. Biermann, Schmitt, and Cook have been my main conversation partners on all matters “Christianity and culture.” Each has provided helpful and significant insights. I have also enjoyed extensive and fruitful conversations about this subject with colleagues at Concordia Seminary, namely Samuel Fuhrmann, Ryan Laughlin, and Ted Hopkins. Dr. Beth Hoeltke has also been a great advocate and encourager in terms of doing what needed to be done to press forward when progress was often slow or stalled. Finally, my great friend Matthew Bracey has pushed me to greater degrees of precision on this topic, and helped me formulate my specific concerns. For him and many more brothers and sisters, I am thankful. Much attention has been given to evangelical cultural engagement over the last few decades. While this project is partially a critique of some of this thought, I am indebted to those who have preceded me and tried to address the thorny questions that comprise this topic. I have been benefited from others who have labored to minister well in their cultural contexts, and communicate their ideas with the written word. The focus of this project is on the vocabulary or language employed in this realm, an emphasis inculcated in me by two former professors, Drs. Darrell Holley and Stanley Hauerwas.

    Teaching Christian History in Seminary: A Declension Story Walter Sawatsky Introduction Do good theology and good pastoring necessarily require deep interest in the Church’s history? A low view of Christian history has long been a free church affliction, apparently due to an exaggerated belief in the sole authority of Scripture. When scholars in my circle recently began talking about a “usable” history, I soon realized this discussion was not really about history. Rather, it was a theological misuse of history, an effort to achieve theological certainty where the history referred to fits the desired theology. Christian history is about the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church – the “body of Christ” as the primary New Testament image – for which Christ gave himself. Sending the flawed human individuals making up the body of Christ into the world as ambassadors of the good news was a divine risk, done with a “sending” of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide that motley crew of humans “into all truth,” to pick one of Jesus’ descriptors for the Spirit’s role in Christian history. It has proved very tempting to select out a usable “exceptional” chosen people to present a story line more easily seen as Holy Spirit-guided. So, I have often started a Christian history class with the question, Do you love the Church?, in order to start probing the light and shadow sides of the story. This reflection on teaching history in a seminary is shaped by the conclusion I have come to that the troubling legacy of the Anabaptist- Mennonite tradition, as seems true of most free churches, is that we do not love the Church and do not believe the Holy Spirit led it into all truth, except for our small part of the story, properly sanitized.

Printing usually meant publishing news and exciting innovative ideas as quickly as possible. Sometimes, however, Franklin decided to take his time before setting something into print. He then circulated his ideas—spelled out in letters and manuscripts—among trustworthy readers, soliciting the thoughts of friends or colleagues for many weeks or even months. Sometimes it was highly advisable to refrain from immediate publication and to collect, assemble, and weigh the relevant material—to obtain the best, the most mature result. Obviously, in the eighteenth-century Republic of Letters, Franklin was not the only printer who had grown used to circulating certain ideas—or even illustrations, engravings, and copper plates—among friends and acquaintances.

    Philipp Spener and the Role of Women in the Church: The Spiritual Priesthood of All Believers in German Pietism Denise D. Kettering-Lane, associate professor of Brethren studies, Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond, Indiana he Pietist movement opened opportunities for women’s par- ticipation in religious life in early modern Germany. Women wrote hymns. Women led conventicles in their homes. Women Twrote theological tracts. But what did the so-called “Father of Pietism,” Philipp Jakob Spener (1635–1705), say about women’s roles? Did Spener introduce new possibilities for women’s involvement in the church, or was he, as K. James Stein has stated, “a child of his times when it came to equality between the sexes”?1 A useful lens for understanding Spener’s view of women’s place within the Pietist movement can be found in his vigorous defense of the spiritual priesthood of all believers. A long- acknowledged fact in the literature on Spener is that he drew heavily on this idea for the laicization of the church, yet little in-depth analysis of his theological writings related to the spiritual priesthood exists, particularly as this idea pertained to women.2 1.     1 A BRIEF HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH Christianity in Armenia can be traced back to the age of the Apostles. The Apostolic Church of Armenia acknowledges as its original founders two of the twelve Apostles of Christ, St. Thaddeus and St. Bartholomew, who evangelized in Armenia, and were martyred there. It was at the beginning of the fourth century, during the reign of King Trirdates III, and through the missionary efforts of St. Gregory that Christianity was declared and adopted as the official religion of Armenia in 301 A.D. Until the 5th century, Christian worship in Armenia was conducted in Greek or Syriac. In 404 A.D., St. Mesrob together with the Catholicos St. Sahag (387-439), having the financial assistance and collaboration of King Vramshabouh, invented the Armenian alphabet in 404, which became a decisive and crucial event for Armenian Christianity. Soon after with a number of disciples, St. Mesrob worked on the translation of the Bible and a large number of religious and theological works were translated into Armenian, and the golden age of classical Armenian literature began shortly thereafter. This “cultural revolution” gave national identity and led to one of the most creative and prolific periods in the history of Armenian culture. The Armenian Apostolic Church aligns herself with the non- Chalcedonian or with lesser-Eastern-Orthodox churches, namely: Syrian Orthodox Church; Coptic Orthodox Church; Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
