GAMES 5

The Flyers are 20-2 all-time when leading a series 3 games to 1. The only ones to go south from that point are the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals vs. NJD and the 1988 Patrick Division Semifinals vs. Washington. Of the 22 occasions in which they have been up 3-1 in a series, they have been able to close it out in Game 5 14 times.

Game 5 has been the best game over the years for the Flyers, as they have gone 36-26, 10 games over 500.

The Flyers have not held a 3-1 series lead since the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals vs. Pittsburgh, which is the last series they won.

GAME 4 RECAP Tuesday, August 18, 2020 – Flyers 2, Montreal 0 at Scotiabank Arena: Carter Hart made 29 saves to record his second consecutive shutout as the Flyers beat Montreal 2-0 to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Michael Raffl gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead 6:32 into the contest, and Philippe Myers added an insurance goal with 2:56 left in the second period. Hart made seven saves in the first period, 10 in the second and 12 in the third to move his numbers to a 1.51 GAA and .949 save percentage. Carey Price turned away 20 shots in the setback. Stars of the Game: 1 – Carter Hart; 2 – Michael Raffl; 3 – Philippe Myers.

AROUND THE RINK

Carter Hart is the third Flyers goaltender to record back-to-back playoff shutouts. The others are as follows:

1975 Quarterfinals vs. Toronto, Bernie Parent, Games 2 and 3 2010 Conference Finals vs. Montreal, Michael Leighton, Games 1 and 2

Per NHL Stats and Information, Hart is the second-youngest goaltender in NHL history to record back-to-back shutouts in the playoffs, and just the fourth different goaltender to do so under the age of 23.

Bernie Parent 1973-1974 4/14/1974 4/23/1974 127:57

The streaks of Boucher and Parent in 1974 all involve time in periods. Boucher’s franchise record doesn’t actually involve a shutout game. Phil Myre’s streak involves overtime and non-consecutive games; he played an OT win on 4/11/80 and didn’t play the next six games before returning to the net for a shutout on 5/1/80.

Per NHL Stats and Information, the Flyers are the first NHL team to lead a seven-game series after four games while scoring only five goals. In 2018, Vegas swept Los Angeles while scoring seven goals. Entering play today, no other team has been up 3-1 after four games while scoring fewer than seven goals; that has happened five times, the most recent of which was in 2017 when St. Louis led Minnesota 3-1.

The Flyers had previously become the first NHL team to lead a series after three games when only scoring three goals, eclipsing the previous record of four, most recently done in 2017 in the same STL/MIN series.

The Flyers have allowed just six goals in the series, which ties a franchise record for fewest goals allowed through four games of a best-of-seven. They’ve done it five times previously, the most recent of which was the 2000 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals vs. Buffalo.

The Flyers have not played an overtime playoff game since Game 3 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. New Jersey on May 3, 2012. When counting the three round-robin games, the Flyers have played 28 consecutive postseason contests without going to overtime. That ties the franchise high set between May 7, 1985 and May 2, 1987.

FLYERS VS. MONTREAL

This is the seventh time the teams are facing each other in the playoffs. They have split the previous three series. This is the first time the clubs are meeting in the First Round of a playoff year.

CONNECTIONS

Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault and assistant coach Michel Therrien are both former Canadiens head coaches.

Vigneault led the team from 1997-2000 and was the second-youngest head coach in franchise history when he was hired at age 36. He received his first nomination for the Jack Adams Award following the 1999-2000 season.

Therrien has coached the Canadiens on two occasions. He replaced Vigneault in 2000 and led the team until midway through the 2002-03 season. He was re-hired in 2012 and spent just under five seasons there until midway through the 2016-17 season. Therrien ranks fourth all-time in Canadiens history in games coached (352) and in wins (194).

Nate Thompson was acquired from the Canadiens in a deadline-day trade in February. Thompson appeared in 63 games for the Habs this year, picking up four goals and 10 assists. He was acquired by Montreal in 2019, also in a deadline deal, and totaled five goals and 16 assists in 88 games with the club.

Dale Weise appeared in 152 games for the Flyers over parts of three seasons from 2016-2019, scoring 17 goals and adding 17 assists. He was traded to Montreal on February 9, 2019.

Cayden Primeau is the son of former Flyers , who played 312 games for the team from 1999-2006. Cayden Primeau was selected with a seventh-round pick acquired from the Flyers at the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Max Domi previously wore #16 in Arizona in tribute to Bobby Clarke. Both are Type 1 diabetics, and Domi has said he drew inspiration from Clarke in pursuing his career.

Phil Myers was one of four players to lead the league in plus-minus with a plus-6 rating. (The other three were all from MTL – Paul Byron, Ben Chiarot and Artturi Lehkonen.) Myers’s defensive partner Travis Sanheim was a plus-5.

Kevin Hayes had four assists, three of which came vs. Washington. Hayes is one of several first-year Flyers who brings extensive playoff experience to the roster, having appeared in 34 career games with the NY Rangers (all under Alain Vigneault) and six with the . Hayes was part of the Rangers’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

Ivan Provorov averaged 25:09 of ice time, which is 12th in the league. He ranked eighth in the league over the course of the regular season with an average of 24:51.

The Canadiens and the Philadelphia Flyers meet tonight in Game 5 of the Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs. The Flyers defeated the Canadiens 2-1 in Game 1, last Wednesday. The team that wins Game 1 of a Best-of-Seven series went on to win the series 478 of 697 times (68.6% efficiency - according to NHL Morning Skate).

The Canadiens responded by shutting out the Flyers 5-0 to tie the series. It was Kirk Muller's first game as interim head coach and his players dedicated their efforts to him and Claude Julien, who returned home to rest after the installation of a stent in a coronary artery. Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored two goals in the win, as did Tomas Tatar, and Max Domi had 3 points in a playoff game for the first time in his career (0-3-3).

The Flyers made sure to answer back quickly to the Canadiens by shutting them out in Game 3 of the series, after being silenced in the previous game. With a 1-0 win, Philadelphia managed to regain a 2-1 series lead. Carter Hart earned his first shutout of the playoffs and Jakub Voracek scored the only goal of the game.

The Flyers kept the momentum going and won 2-0 in Game 4, therefore taking the lead in the series 3-1. Carter Hart continued to build on his recent good work, stopping each one of the Canadiens' attacks. Paul Byron distributed five hits despite the loss.
