After winning both the 1980 ave regular season and tournament champion ships enroute to a 47-13- 1 overall record and t he school's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, last year's Hilltoppers came within a whisker of duplicating that outstanding feat - posting a fine 41 -18 record and winning the ave Northern Division tille before falling 10 Ea stern Kentucky in the ave tourney. And, despite losing six full- or part-lime starters, including '81 ave Player-of the-Year (Nonhern Division) M ike W illiams (now in the Detroit Tigers organization) and District II I Academic AIl-America catcher ReneZarate, Western should once again be a strong contender for the OVC crown. One reason for such optimism is the fact that the Hilltoppers return six .300 hitters from a club that batted .332 to rank 15th in the nation last year. Heading that distinguished list are a trio of A II ·America candidates - senior centerfielder Donnie Thomas (.403), senior first baseman Paul Knuth (.359, 19 HR s, 63 RBi s), and junior catcher· outfielder-designated hitter Ralph Antone (.360, 15 HRs, 59 RBis). Other infield returnees include second baseman Brian Day (.367), shortstop pitcher Jim " Hondo" Hess (.342) and third sacker Kevin Birkofer (.287). One newcomer who figures to be in line for the starting shortstop pOSition is junior J im Rathbun, a transfer from Lakeland (III.) Community College, who looked impressive in the fall. Other infield newcomers include first baseman J ohn Decker, a transfer from Volunteer State (Tenn.) Community College; catcher· first baseman Matt Logic, a freshman out of Racine, Wisc.; second sacker Joe Garafola, a junior from Greenlawn, N.Y.; catcher Dan M osier, a junior college transfer from Griswald, la.; sophomore shortstop M ark DeRuuo, a walk· on from Harvey, La.; and Van Isler, a JuCo transfer from Brooksville, Fla. In addition to Thomas, the outfield should once again be bolstered by hustling rightfielder Rick Parrish, who batted .3 12 while scoring49 runs in 57 games last spring. New faces competing for a starting outfield slot include Ron Lighthiser, a transfer f rom Largo, Fla.; Gary Dreher, a transfer from' Niles, M ich.; and sophomore Timmy Bray, a native of nearby Russellville, Ky. Western'S pitching staff, young and inexperienced last season, looks polished and poised for the 1982 ca mpaig n. A trio of seniors top the list of returning hurlers. They include flame· throwing righthanded starter Cam Walker (7-1, 4 .91 ERA). crafty reliever Doug Metz, a righthander who tied a school record for both appearences(16) and victories(8 ) in a single season last spring, and lefthander Kevin Benzing, a breaking ball pitcher who finished 5-3 in '81 . Twoveterans juniors, Craig M art in and Greg Raymer, will see plenty of mound action. M artin was 3-3 with a 3 .22 ERA and Raymer wound up 2·2 with a 3 .56 ERA last season. Sophomore

Testimony of Willie M. Aikens Before the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security Of the House Judiciary Committee “Unfairness in Federal Cocaine Sentencing: Is it Time to Crack the 100 to 1 Disparity?” Thursday, May 21, 2009 Thank you Chairman Scott and members of the Subcommittee for inviting me to testify before you today. My name is Willie M. Aikens and I am here to tell my story about the direct effects of crack cocaine on my life. I will also testify about how the mandatory minimums and especially the sharp disparity between the penalties for crack and powder cocaine have touched me, my family, and friends I left behind in the Federal Prison System. I grew up in Seneca, South Carolina without ever seeing or knowing who my biological father was. My stepfather was very abusive and was an alcoholic, and so was my first cousin who lived in the same house as me. They both died in 1968 from alcohol related deaths, so at an early age I saw the devastating effects of drugs and alcohol. Later on in life I didn't believe the same thing could happen to me, though it did. I didn't let any of this stop me from pursuing my goal of being an athlete. I truly believe playing sports kept me out of trouble. I went on to finish high school and I earned a football scholarship to South Carolina State College. Since baseball was my favorite sport, I asked the coaches if I could play baseball and they all agreed.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.
