Merchant A native of Ames, Iowa, Dr. Merchant graduated from Ames High School in 1958 where he was active in student government and was as a member of the golf team. He received a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology from in 1962 where he was president of the SAE fraternity and captain of the golf team. Volume 21, Issue 3, Page 2 December, 2010 Ames High Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees The 19th Annual Ames High School Athletic Department’s Hall-of-Fame Induction Banquet was held September 16, 2010 in the Ames High School cafeteria. After social time and dinner, the award presentations began. New Hall-of-Fame members were also recognized at the Ames-Mason City football game on September 17th. Induction into the Hall-of-Fame is the highest honor the athletic department can bestow upon an individual.

Julie Ollila Terry, ’97, as a four-sport athlete earned eleven Andy Kohler, 2000, was a four sport athlete which is a rarity varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, track and soccer at the 4A level of competition. Championship Swimmers The 2010 Ames girls’ swimming team won Ames High’s first ever swimming and diving team championship. Three school records and two state records were set, four event state championships were won and two events received “All American” status. Junior Maddie Bro was awarded the “State Athlete of the Year,” and the Ames coaching staff was awarded “State Coaching Staff of the Year”. The class of 1955 met October 8-10, 55 years after graduation, basketball teams, the 1955 teams are highlighted for their state for their eighth reunion in Ames with 43 classmates and 25 championships. Here we are with Ben Franklin in Smithfield, Virginia, home of Smithfield Hams.

We had a wonderful time staying in a beautiful plantation manor house built in the 1800s right on the James River. We spent one day each in Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and touring two other plantation homes. One day four of us drove over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge- Tunnel to Maryland and Delaware and waded in the Atlantic Ocean at Delaware Seashore State Park. The other four drove to Virginia Beach to play in the water. Class of 1985 The weekend of August 13 and 14, 2010, the Ames High moved at the last minute from Brookside Park, which was Class of 1985 gathered for a 25 year Class Reunion. completely under water, to Emma McCarthy Lee Park. Lincoln Elementary Mini-Reunion A mini-reunion in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the International School Reunion Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, October 7-9, 2010. We had a great weekend together and are planning more. A Lincoln Elementary School reunion was held June 19th at the -Betty Jo Burnet Smith Heartland Senior Center in Ames. More than 100 people from Iowa and as far away as Arkansas and California attended. The reunion committee decorated with items reminiscent of school days and provided refreshments. Lincoln Elementary School was opened in 1911 in Ames and closed its doors for classes in 1970. The gathering in June was the first of its kind for the school. Dennis Wendell (‘59) and Alan Spohnheimer (‘67) from the Ames Historical Society gave a presentation about the school from its early years until its demolition in 1998. Photos and artifacts from the building were on display.
