William of Malmesbury, Historian of Crusade Rod Thomson University of Tasmania William of Malmesbury (c.1096 - c.1143), well known as one of the greatest historians of England, is not usually thought of as a historian of crusadingl His most famous work, the Gesta Regum Anglorum, in five books subdivided into 449 chapters, covers the history of England from the departure of the Romans until the early 1120s.2 But there are many digressions, most of them into Continental history; William is conscious of them and justifies them in explicit appeals to the reader. 3 Some provide necessary background to the course of English affairs, some are there for their entertainment value, and some because of their intrinsic importance. William's account of the First Crusade comes into the third category. It is the longest of all the diversions, occupying the last 46 of the 84 chapters which make up Book IV, or about 12% of the complete Gesta Regum. This is as long as a number of independent crusading chronicles (such as Fulcher's Gesta Francorum Iherosolimitanum Peregrinantium in its earliest edition, or the anonymous Gesta Francorum) and the story is brilliantly told. It follows the course of the Crusade from the Council of Clermont to the capture of Jerusalem, continuing with the so-called Crusade of H aI, and the deeds of the kings of Jerusalem and other great magnates such as Godfrey of Lorraine, Bohemond of Antioch, Raymond of Toulouse and Robert Curthose. The detailed narrative concludes in 1102; some scattered notices come down to c.1124, close to the writing of the Gesta, with a very little updating carried out in H34-5. -

Glastonbury Abbey – Archaeology, Spirit and Legend
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT Glastonbury Abbey – Archaeology, Spirit and Legend Glastonbury means different things to different people. Many Christians believe that it’s the site of the earliest church in Britain, allegedly founded in the first century by Joseph of Arimathea. For others, it’s the epicentre of the New Age community in Britain, drawn by Glastonbury’s rich mythic associations with King Arthur. And now, thanks to the work of a Reading academic, the Abbey’s history has been brought to life and its future secured. A partnership between Professor Roberta Gilchrist and the trustees of Glastonbury Abbey has harnessed archaeological archives to ask new research questions, making for better understanding and conservation of the heritage site and creating an enhanced visitor experience. Glastonbury Abbey is internationally renowned as both the site of the earliest church in England and the legendary burial place of King Arthur. It attracts nearly 100,000 visitors every year, but until recently its archaeological story remained untold. Extensive excavations took place at the Abbey between 1904 and 1979 but these remained unpublished, fuelling contested opinions about date of origin, legend and historical fact. Understanding of the Abbey’s archaeology was impeded, limiting approaches to interpretation and conservation. It was also a barrier to economic growth for the heritage site, shutting the door on permissions from the statutory authorities for any new excavations or developments. www.reading.ac.uk/research/impact October 2018 But this challenge also provided rich opportunity for research collaboration and co-creation. I VENTURE to think that bishop Eeginald Fitzjocelin deserves a place of higher honour in the history of the diocese, and of the fabric of the church of Wells, than has hitherto been accorded to him. His memory has been obscured by the traditionary fame of bishop Robert as the "author," and of bishop Jocelin as the "finisher," of the church of Wells; and the importance of his episcopate as a connecting link in the work of these two master-builders has been comparatively overlooked. The only authorities followed for the history of his episcopate have been the work of the Canon of Wells, printed by Wharton, in his Anglia Sacra, 1691, and bishop Godwin, in his Catalogue of the Bishops of England, 1601—1616. The database makes it possible to order references to an object in many ways including in terms of dedication, location, date, and possible authenticity, and it makes data available to derive some history of the object in order to assess the reliability of the information it presents. -

The academic co-supervisors bring complementary expertise in monastic archaeology/ placemaking (Gilchrist) and deposit-mapping/ digital visualisation (Sturt). Gilchrist has supervised 13 PhDs to successful completion, including an AHRC CDA, and has extensive experience of collaborative research with non-HEIs (Glastonbury Abbey, British Museum, MoLA). Sturt has supervised 13 PhDs to successful completion and co-directed a Leverhulme DTC. The non-HEI co-supervisors connect the project to practical heritage management in Reading, providing opportunities to engage with statutory planning processes and placemaking in the Abbey Quarter. Williams and Macdonald have previous experience of managing projects, internships and studentships. Subject This project connects the medieval archaeology of Reading Abbey (RA) with current heritage needs and opportunities in the town of Reading. It offers a unique platform for a doctoral student to make an original contribution to archaeological understanding of this site of national historical significance; to develop innovative approaches to 4D digital data modelling and visualisation; and to use the research to inform local conservation policy and community engagement with heritage. -
