Our Highlights of the Month FICTION Clare Mackintosh, the best-selling author of the psychological thrillers I Let You Go and I See You, reveals her latest, Let Me Lie. Other thrillers come from Robert Goddard and Edward Wilson, whose previous espionage novels we have much admired. The pick of the paperbacks is The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce. Tim Marshall, whose Prisoners of Geography is one of our bestsellers, now looks at why we are Divided: Why We’re Living in an Age of Walls. The latest wide-ranging survey from Neil MacGregor is of Living with the Gods: 40,000 Years of Peoples, Objects and Beliefs. Pearls Before Poppies: The Story of the Red Cross Pearls by Rachel Trethewey sounds like a fascinating story. HOUSES AND GARDENS There are lots of new books about great houses, gardens and gardening. In A Slice of , India Hicks describes her family’s homes and her own new house in Oxfordshire. There are Paradise Gardens from Monty Don as well as books about Walled Gardens, Peonies and Double Flowers. The new Yellow Book will be available by 1st March. EQUINE Two self-recommending titles: The Girl on the Dancing Horse by the Olympic dressage star Charlotte Dujardin, and The Jumping Game: How National Hunt Trainers work and what makes them tick by Henrietta Knight. Photo Competition – August 2017 Chipping Norton Each year we enjoy putting the Photo Competition Lions Club together, finding new and unusual things to photograph in familiar places. The competition is designed to encourage people to get out and discover a little more about this wonderful corner of the Cotswolds - and we are always delighted by the number of readers who take part – residents, visitors and holiday makers! ONE-TO-ONE LITERACY SUPPORT Children’s charity announces new impact data demonstrating the effectiveness of one-to-one literacy support Local children’s literacy charity Beanstalk has launched its latest Impact Report demonstrating the impact of providing one-to-one literacy support to children struggling with their reading. The charity supports children who have fallen behind with their reading by recruiting, training and placing volunteers to work one-to-one with pupils in primary schools across England. Last year it helped around 1,800 children in the North West of England through the support of approximately 530 volunteers. Schools provide Beanstalk with information on the children’s reading attainment before and after they have been supported by their reading helpers, while reading helpers also monitor the children’s progress through Beanstalk’s Reading Records. Beanstalk’s Impact Report showed the following results: > 82% of Key Stage 1 children who were classed as reading ‘Below’ age-related expectations when they began working with a Beanstalk reading helper moved up to ‘Working Towards’ (47%) or ‘At’ or Above’ (35%) > 57% of KS1 children who were classed as ‘Working Towards’ age-related expectations when they began working with a Beanstalk reading helper moved up to ‘At’ or ‘Above.’ > The number of KS1 children able to predict what might happen next in a story without additional support more than doubled from 27% at the beginning of the Beanstalk intervention to 61% at the end. > The number of KS1 children able to use their sounds to work out new words on their own increased from 28% to 67% during their time with their reading helper. > The number of KS1 children who could talk on their own about a range of books they have listened to and read including stories, poems and factual books increased from 8% to 34% - a 425% increase! > The percentage of children who were confident when choosing books and games during the session more than doubled - from 26% to 56%. > Children’s confidence and enjoyment also improved; the number of children requiring support in order to maintain a positive attitude throughout the reading session almost halved. > The impact on KS2 children was less pronounced but significant progress was made - especially in their breadth of reading and engagement in a wider range of genres

Fanolua played at centre for Gloucester for 10 years and for Samoa in 2 World Cups and one Sevens World Cup. The first day of the camp concentrated on developing ball handling skills and good body position whilst the second day looked at managing the contact area. The players all worked hard over the two days, sometimes with the rain on their backs and were rewarded at the end of it. Former Stow player and current Gloucester wing Ollie Thorley (below in the middle at the back) attended on day two to answer questions and sign autographs. Ollie is a club hero and a great example of what you can achieve through natural talent, hard work and dedication.

Its fair to say the First XV have had a tough season so far, suffering from both injuries and availability. They are sitting 3rd from bottom in the Southern Counties North league but have the advantage of 11 points over Gosford All Blacks, the team below them and 22 points over Drifters who are last. The team have been bolstered on occasion by players from the Seconds and they stepped up seam- lessly showing that there is not so much between our two senior teams. 5 matches have been won out of 15 but crucially, points have been taken from those teams just above and below Stow. The team have put in some good performances over the season includ- ing a recent loss to table toppers Beaconsfield and were unlucky not to take a losing bonus point. With 7 matches remaining the team need to gain some consistency in their performance to see the U10s Ruck On season out with some wins and secure their place in the league. The event took place at Stover School, near Newton Abbot on the edge of Dartmoor.
