Terry Trickman [TM]: You first or JL: Well I got into video games back in 1981. I was working as an artist I was working at Triton College in River Grove and I got a call one day from a friend of mine, Richard Tracy, who I’ve known for a number of years socially. We played music together and he knew one of my hobbies was playing games war games, cards, and board games all kinds of stuff like that and he had recently taken a job at D. Gottlieb & Co. which was one of the three, four , five pinball companies in chicago. Chicago being the home of pinball and D. Gottlieb invented the flipper game back in the 30s and JM: It was mostly tilt before that right? JL: Yeah, I guess, I guess so that’s all they did All: [laughs] JL: Supposedly, supposedly, David Gottlieb or even probably one of his engineers invented the flipper then right and anyway the video game boom had commenced and a lot of the companies, Bally Midway, Williams, and Stern, had jumped on that bandwagon.

    WILLIAM CHENG Dartmouth College Email: [email protected] So You’ve Been Musically Shamed ABSTRACT In July 2014, an anonymous source leaked the raw audio of Britney Spears’s confessional ballad “Alien.” Haters pounced on this star’s denuded voice, gleefully seizing on the viral artifact as a smoking gun for Spears’s deficits and for the pop industry’s artistic fakeries more broadly. My paper situates this flashpoint of Spears-shaming within late-capitalist archives of public humiliation, cyberleaks, and the paternalistic scrutiny of women’s bodies and voices. KEYWORDS: critical theory, media studies, popular music A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity and shame is an industry. How is the money made? Clicks. This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged. “LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME”: AN ANALYSIS OF LOVE AS A POLARISED DISCOURSE IN POP MUSIC For centuries, love has been a central theme in western literature, and a pivotal element of western culture as a whole. From the classical era to the 21st Century, uncountable stories, poems and songs have tirelessly been constructed around the concept of romantic love. In the western classical literary tradition, a part of the canon is reserved to pieces revolving around this concept, such as Ovid’s Ars Amatoria. As Hecht points out in his introduction to The Sonnets by Shakespeare, literary pieces in which the author immortalises “his beloved in deathless verse” are part of “a poetic convention that can be traced back to classical antiquity” (10-11). Hecht mentions Homer and Virgil in order to support his thesis, and still many other classical authors, such as Sappho’s poetry, could be added to the list. Since the classical era, love also played an important role in the religious system; gods and goddesses were adored in its name. For example, the goddess of fertility was already worshipped in the prehistoric era, and the Greeks named Aphrodite their own personal goddess of love. Likewise, the theme of love reappears in medieval imagery where it was used as a motor force for the construction of legends, tales and stories.
