Mean Streets: Death and Disfiguration in Hawks's Scarface ASBJØRN GRØNSTAD Consider this paradox: in Howard Hawks' Scarface, The Shame of the Nation, violence is virtually all-encompassing, yet it is a film from an era before American movies really got violent. There are no graphic close-ups of bullet wounds or slow-motion dissection of agonized faces and bodies, only a series of abrupt, almost perfunctory liquidations seemingly devoid of the heat and passion that characterize the deaths of the spastic Lyle Gotch in The Wild Bunch or the anguished Mr. Orange, slowly bleeding to death, in Reservoir Dogs. Nonetheless, as Bernie Cook correctly points out, Scarface is the most violent of all the gangster films of the eatly 1930s cycle (1999: 545).' Hawks's camera desists from examining the anatomy of the punctured flesh and the extended convulsions of corporeality in transition. The film's approach, conforming to the period style of ptc-Bonnie and Clyde depictions of violence, is understated, euphemistic, in its attention to the particulars of what Mark Ledbetter sees as "narrative scarring" (1996: x). It would not be illegitimate to describe the form of violence in Scarface as discreet, were it not for the fact that appraisals of the aesthetics of violence are primarily a question of kinds, and not degrees. In Hawks's film, as we shall see, violence orchestrates the deep structure of the narrative logic, yielding an hysterical form of plotting that hovers between the impulse toward self- effacement and the desire to advance an ethics of emasculation. Scarface is a film in which violence completely takes over the narrative, becoming both its vehicle and its determination. -

Melville 2 When Truman Capote was initially sent to Holcomb, Kansas, in 1959, his assignment was to write an article about a recent murder for The New Yorker (Giordano). Upon his arrival, his inability to control his word count caused the intended article to evolve into the book In Cold Blood. Since its publication in book form in 1966, In Cold Blood has been adapted four times.1 Each adaptation presents different nuances to the story but respects the progression of events within the original text. The narrative unfolds as two men – Perry Smith and Richard “Dick” Hickcock – murder the Clutter family and attempt to evade the police. -

Justice in a Small Town: In Cold Blood By: Zach Logsdon The deliberate act of killing another human being is a close definition of murder. But what if the victim was actually the perpetrator of a crime so heinous that it shook your community to its core? Is killing this person also murder? No matter how just a given idea is in the abstract, when the time comes to carry out a death sentence, there are people who cannot find justice in the actual taking of an eye for and eye. Additionally, sometimes passion for justice dies out with the crowds as those affected by the crime have no choice but to replace their passion with patience and to turn colder as they wait for the system to mandate a moral end to the ordeal. In my small town, many people have been forced to consider the notion of justice, as the rape and murder of a seven year old girl on the property of my own public school has tested the community’s character. The alleged murderer is behind bars and has pled not guilty for the past year. Even with the death penalty on the table, the man has refused to plea bargain. I suppose I should not be surprised to know that many good-hearted people of my town, who I feel to be righteous and who I know to act in the interest of the greater good were more than satisfied with the possibility of a death sentence for this man. Some of them have even said that if this accused man is acquitted, they feel that a lynch mob will, “take care of him anyway.” I know I should not be surprised to hear these things, but I am. -

The Independent Producer: Michael Klinger and New Film History
RESEARCH ARTICLE Creativity and commerce: Michael Klinger and new film history Andrew Spicer* School of Creative Arts, University of the West of England, Bristol BS3 2JT, UK The crisis in film studies and history concerning their legitimacy and objectives has provoked a reinvigoration of scholarly energy in historical enquiry. „New film history‟ attempts to address the concerns of historians and film scholars by working self-reflexively with an expanded range of sources and a wider conception of „film‟ as a dynamic set of processes rather than a series of texts. The practice of new film history is here exemplified through a detailed case study of the independent British producer Michael Klinger (active 1961-1987) with a specific focus on his unsuccessful attempt to produce a war film, Green Beach, based on a memoir of the Dieppe raid (August 1942). This case study demonstrates the importance of analysing the producer‟s role in understanding the complexities of film-making, the continual struggle to balance the competing demands of creativity and commerce. In addition, its subject matter – an undercover raid and a Jewish hero – disturbed the dominant myths concerning the Second World War, creating what turned out to be intractable ideological as well as financial problems. The paper concludes that the concerns of film historians need to engage with broader cultural and social histories. THE AMERICAN INDIAN IN THE AMERICAN FILM Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in American Studies in the University of Canterbury by Michael J. Brathwaite 1981 ABSTRACT This thesis is a chronological examination of the ways in which American Indians have been portrayed in American 1 f.ilms and the factors influencing these portrayals. B eginning with the literary precedents, the effects of three wars and other social upheavals and changes are considered. In addition t-0 being the first objective detailed examination of the subj�ct in English, it is the first work to cover the last decade.
