RIJEKA Rijeka is the capital city of the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar and probably the most important port city in Croatia. Because of founding tracks now it can be said that the history of the city of Rijeka goes back in the Palaeolithic (Stone Age) and Neolithic age. The fortress Trsat On the hill Trsat the same name fortress is located in 138 meters above sea level. In ancient times, in the fortress was a Liburnia Sentinel controlled the route from the inland to the the sea. The fortress is one of the best preserved in Croatia and frequently visited again and again with tourists, because of the fort there is a view of the city of Rijeka and the river “Riječina” that runs through. On the fortress there is a cafe bar, ideal for relaxing with a specially view, especially if you have dared and climbed the Trsat steps (Trsatske stube). Today, various open-air concerts are held in the fortress, especially in summer. The stages of Petar Kružić The stages of Petar Kružić popularly known and called as "Trsatske stube" (Trsat stages) lead from the delta of the river Rječina to the pilgrimage church. The steps were built by Petar Kružić (Croatian army commander) in 1531, with 128 steps, as a donation. Over the years, more and more levels and donors chapels are added by donators, so it now has more than 500 steps that lead up to the church. There is a relief of the Virgin comforting to the column inlet with the words „CONSOLATRIX AFFLICTORUM“ (Consoler of the Sad). Maria-Pilgrimage In Rijeka, also on the hill Trsat is the oldest pilgrimage of Croatia „ Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat “and this is the story: According to chronicles written in the 15th century, the birth house of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Santa Casa) was brought on May 10, 1291 with God’s will by angels on the hill of Trsat. Here it remained for 3 years, until it was transferred to also miraculously on 10 December 1294 to Loreto, which is on the opposite side of the Adriatic. From that time on the Croatian population began to pilgrimage on the hill of Trsat. In 1367 the Pope Urban V donated at the request of Ivan (John) and Stjepan (Stephan) Francopan, the still grieving residents because of the loss of the Holy house a picture of grace, which is worshiped since then. It says the author of the painting is unknown and G. Gamulin refers to this as "the painter of Our Lady of Trsat". In 1453, the Croatian princes Frankopan built a church and a monastery which was left to the Franciscans. During the following centuries, the church was expanded several times until it did not get its present appearance in 1824. In 2008, a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II was built in front of the Church. The monument commemorates of his visit in the year of 2003. "Pray for me, to Our Lady of Trsat as long as I live, and even when I die!" With these words the Pope summarized his private visit to Trsat. When the Pope approached the altar of the Mother of God, he asked them to put up the kneeler until the image of the Mother of God, then he kneels down and sank into a silent prayer while he looked at the image of the Mother of God. The Pope did a pilgrim gesture, he gave the sanctuary a rosary saying "Pray for me, to Our Lady of Trsat as long as I live, and even when I die!" which were also engraved in the monument. After a short time you can now see at the hands of the Pope at the monument how many pilgrims already proven in his honor, one touch, one kiss ...... ..     THE KRK DIOCESE THE ISLES SHALL WAIT FOR HIS TEACHINGS O I R E T S I IN M T I E N IO ORAT FOREWORD The centuries-long presence of Christianity on the islands of the Krk Diocese is deeply rooted in the life and culture of its population, which has been subject to a succession of various social orders during the course of history. Until the year 1828, there were three dioceses within this territory: Krk, Osor and Rab. The presence of a bishop and his relationship with the people had a strong impact upon spiritual formation and identity. The pas- tors of the small dioceses of the Kvarner Islands demonstrated magna- nimity and openness of spirit toward the beautiful and modern, while at the same time listening to the “pulse” of the people, incorporating their language in worship. The beauty of handwritten and illuminated Glagolitic missals, psalters and antiphonals greatly enriched the corpus of liturgical literature traditionally written in Latin. Christian culture, both spiritual and material, is reflected here in the arts of painting, architecture, literature, poetry and music. This is a Church distinguished by its priests and religious, especially the Benedictines and Franciscans, including those with the reputation of saintliness, who have played exceptional historical roles in the raising and fostering of national consciousness, enhancement of the quality of life, education in moral principles, and the creation and safeguarding of the cultural heritage. These values provided a firm foundation for assuring the survival of this nation under changing conditions, not infrequently im- posed by fire and sword.

Šašel Kos, 1995 Introduction The map covers very heterogeneous landscapes ranging from the Adriatic coast to the Alps, and from the mountainous interiors of the provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia with their rich ore sources to the Pannonian plain. The current state of research–to some degree reflected by the map–is uneven. Thus the Carinthian province of Austria (Piccottini 1989), Slovenia (ANSl 1975), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (ALBiH) are better explored topographically than other regions where no compilations of archaeological sites have been published. The results of topographical research conducted over the past thirty years by Bojanovski (1988) are of great importance. Much antiquarian and topographic information has been collected for Histria and Venetia by Vedaldi Iasbez (1994), with particular attention to Greek and Latin writers. Similarly substantial collection and assessment of data for the Dalmatian coast and islands are provided by Kozličić (1990). TIR Tergeste (1961), TIR Aquincum (1968) and TIR Naissus (1976) are also of value for the areas they cover, though not always reliable. Mócsy’s work (RE Suppl. 9 Pannonia) remains fundamental for the province of Pannonia. As Kozličić (1986) has shown, since antiquity geomorphological changes along the Dalmatian and Istrian coasts have been minimal, if only because no very large rivers flow into the Adriatic; the map therefore retains the modern coastline. The coast of the eastern Adriatic is, however, sinking at a minimal rate annually (Šegota 1976). Geographic names by no means always appear in the nominative in the Greek and Latin sources; the point applies especially to ItAnt, ItBurd, TabPeut and GeogRav, which often represent the only evidence.

    COUNT IVAN ANŽ FRANKOPAN, THE ROYAL STEWARD OF THE ESTATE IN SWEDEN 1426 - 1434 Mladen Ibler Within the framework of medieval history of Europe and its own geostrategic location, Scandinavian royalties and nobility entertained contacts with central and western Europe. Less known however, is the relationship between Eric of Pomerania, the King of the three Scandinavian realms and the Croatian nobility of Frankopans. This paper attempts to provide the short description of the conditions in Croatia and Scandinavia at the beginning of XV century, the relationship between Eric of Pommerania and count Ivan Anž Frankopan, and the role of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) during King Eric’s travel on his way to the Holy Land 1424-5. Based on Dubrovnik, Budapest, Vatican, and Scandinavian sources, a special emphasis is beeing given to the events surrounding Ivan Anž Frankopan’s visit to Sweden. In Venetian and Scandinavian sources, he is reffered to under the name of Gian Franchi and Johan Franke. Due to this reason, historians have been unaware of the real identity of King Eric’s steward of the estate (fief) Stegeborg in Sweden 1426-34, count Ivan Anž Frankopan. Key words: Frankopan, Ivan Anž; the King Eric of Pommerania; Stegeborg; Kalmar Union I. The Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia has been in personal union with Kingdom of Hungary since 1102. Its main parts, Dalmatia and Croatia were governed by a viceroy (Ban), and Slavonia, as the third part, was governed by its own viceroy. In the beginning of the fifteenth century the Kingdom was the object of fight between King Ladislas of Naples and his rival Sigismund of Luxemburg.
