The fortress Trsat On the hill Trsat the same name fortress is located in 138 meters above sea level. The steps were built by Petar Kružić (Croatian army commander) in 1531, with 128 steps, as a donation. Over the years, more and more levels and donors chapels are added by donators, so it now has more than 500 steps that lead up to the church. There is a relief of the Virgin comforting to the column inlet with the words „CONSOLATRIX AFFLICTORUM“ (Consoler of the Sad). Maria-Pilgrimage In Rijeka, also on the hill Trsat is the oldest pilgrimage of Croatia „ Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat “and this is the story: According to chronicles written in the 15th century, the birth house of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Santa Casa) was brought on May 10, 1291 with God’s will by angels on the hill of Trsat. Here it remained for 3 years, until it was transferred to also miraculously on 10 December 1294 to Loreto, which is on the opposite side of the Adriatic. From that time on the Croatian population began to pilgrimage on the hill of Trsat. In 1367 the Pope Urban V donated at the request of Ivan (John) and Stjepan (Stephan) Francopan, the still grieving residents because of the loss of the Holy house a picture of grace, which is worshiped since then. It says the author of the painting is unknown and G. Gamulin refers to this as "the painter of Our Lady of Trsat". In 1453, the Croatian princes Frankopan built a church and a monastery which was left to the Franciscans. During the following centuries, the church was expanded several times until it did not get its present appearance in 1824. In 2008, a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II was built in front of the Church. The monument commemorates of his visit in the year of 2003. "Pray for me, to Our Lady of Trsat as long as I live, and even when I die!" With these words the Pope summarized his private visit to Trsat. When the Pope approached the altar of the Mother of God, he asked them to put up the kneeler until the image of the Mother of God, then he kneels down and sank into a silent prayer while he looked at the image of the Mother of God. The Pope did a pilgrim gesture, he gave the sanctuary a rosary saying "Pray for me, to Our Lady of Trsat as long as I live, and even when I die!" which were also engraved in the monument.
