The Fitzpatrick 15: Evidence of the Children of John and Catherine (Doran) Fitzpatrick of County Tipperary by Erin Hill-Burns ([email protected]) 9 September 2019 John Fitzpatrick married Catherine Doran 10 February 1872 in Parish of Ballingarry, County Tipperary, Ireland. John was the son of Bryan Fitzpatrick, Catherine was the daughter of Pat Doran, and the witnesses were Joseph Taylor and Johanna Doran.1 Various sets of family notes have indicated that John and Catherine had a large family, often claiming that they had fifteen children. Many of these contained few details about where the information came from, though.2 In some cases, the names of their children have not been consistent across sources; for example, one set of notes lists children Daniel and William,3 while no other source has been found mentioning those two names (see more below). This document gives an overview of the family of John and Catherine. In summary, the evidence suggests that John and Catherine were the parents of the following fifteen children: 1. Margaret (b. 1872 in Ballingarry) 2. Mary (b. 1873) 3. Johanna (b. 1876 in Mullinahone) 4. Bernard/Bryan (b. 1878 in Fethard) 5. Patrick (b. 1879 in Fethard) 6. Margaret (b. 1881 in Killenaule) 7. Catherine (b. 1883 in Killenaule) 8. Bridget (b. 1885 in Killenaule) 9. Patrick (b. 1887 in Killenaule) 10. Ellen (b. 1889 in Killenaule) 11. John (b. 1891 in Killenaule) 12. Anastasia (b. 1894 in Killenaule) 13. Thomas (b. abt. 1895) 14. Edmond (b. 1898 in Ballingarry) 15. Alice (b. 1900 in Ballingarry) See below for more details. The table below shows information from sources linking John and Catherine with their children. Since this focuses on evidence that the people listed were children of John and Catherine (Doran) Fitzpatrick, numerous other sources found about the family have not been included here (such as those with evidence of marriage, descendants, or deaths of some of the fifteen). All birth records found pertaining to this family are listed in the table above. No civil birth record was found for Thomas Fitzpatrick. No image of an original birth record has been found for Mary, but a birth record has been indexed for Mary Fitzpatrick, born 19 January 1874 in Callan, to John and Catherine Doran Fitzpatrick.40 Baptisms for Ballingarry Parish and Powerstown Parish have only been made available online through part of 1881, so the registers of baptisms for these two parishes were read through in search of any children of John and Catherine (Doran) Fitzpatrick baptized between 1872 and early 1881.41 All baptisms found for the children of John and Catherine are listed in the table above. Note that in the table above, some of the Fitzpatrick children (Mary and Johanna) had birth dates recorded later than their dates of baptism. These inconsistencies were probably due to the fact that while they were likely baptized very soon after they were born (within days), their birth may not have actually been registered until later, and so the baptism date may have been more accurate than the birth date.42 Additional Information Daniel, son of Margaret: A Daniel Fitzpatrick, son of a domestic servant, died 7 March 1900 at 3 months old in Foyle, Ballingarry; the death was reported by Kate Fitzpatrick of Foyle, his grandmother, who was present at the time.43 Daniel’s death was recorded in the register directly beneath the death of Alice Fitzpatrick of Foyle (one of the fifteen Fitzpatrick children, see above), which was reported by Alice’s mother, Kate Fitzpatrick of Foyle, on the same day that Daniel’s death was reported.44 This suggests that the Kate Fitzpatrick who was Daniel’s grandmother was the same Kate Fitzpatrick who was Alice’s mother, tying Daniel to this family. Three months prior to the above Daniel’s death 10 December 1899, a Daniel was born in Foyle to a Margaret “Maggie” Fitzpatrick, a domestic servant – no father was named.45 No other Daniel Fitzpatrick was born in Callan between 1899 and 1900.46 Margaret, the daughter of John and Catherine, would have been about eighteen years old at the time of Daniel’s birth. This evidence suggests that she had a son, Daniel, out of wedlock, and that this son died as an infant. Erin Hill-Burns Page 3 of 7 9 September 2019 Notes on questionable information above (in gray): Marriage of Margaret Fitzpatrick and Daniel Pollard – no family information found to date lists this connection. The Maggie in the marriage record was a servant, whose father was John Fitzpatrick, a labourer. The Margaret/Maggie who was the mother of Daniel Fitzpatrick (who apparently died young and was the grandson of Kate Fitzpatrick, see above) was also a servant. The Daniel and Margaret (Fitzpatrick) Pollard of the marriage register appear to be listed as a married couple with a family in the 1911 census, living in the same area indicated on their marriage record.47 The age of the Margaret in the census (30) is consistent with the Margaret in this family. No other Margaret Fitzpatrick born c.1881 in County Tipperary seems to be as likely a match to the Margaret who married Daniel Pollard as does the one from this family.48 Daniel and William, mystery children: Some family notes have mentioned Daniel and William as children of John and Catherine, but no details about these possible sons were provided, and no corroboration has been found for this suggestion.49 Civil birth records list only one Daniel Fitzpatrick born between 1870 and 1905 in the districts of Callan and Cashel (where all other children in the family were born).50 This one Daniel Fitzpatrick is the son of Margaret and grandson of Kate Fitzpatrick mentioned above. Several William Fitzpatricks were born between 1870 and 1905 in Callen or Cashel,51 but none seem to fit in with this family. So, it seems that a mention of a son in the family could have been the result of some confusion about Daniel, the grandson, who died as an infant (and perhaps lived with the family). No evidence has been found to support the suggestion of a son named William. 1 Callan, County Tipperary, Ireland, Marriage Register, District of Ballingarry, p. 8146065, for John Fitzpatrick and Catherine Doran, no. 79, 10 February 1872; in “Civil Records,” database with images, Irish Genealogy (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie : accessed 27 October 2018).
