Overseas Expert Column by Naohiro Goda This is the final career start for ALMOND EYE, The Queen of Turf who won eight G1 races, including the Triple Tiara in 2018. In addition, two undefeated winners of Triple Crown and Triple Tiara in 2020, CONTRAIL and DARING TACT, meet up there. It is a fascinating dream match and I cannot wait for Sunday. This reminds me the 32nd running of the G1 Japan Cup in 2012, when , and SOLEMIA ran together. The 3YO filly, winner of the Triple Tiara in 2012, was just a nose ahead of the 4YO colt, winner of the Triple Crown in 2011, after the pair displayed exciting ding-dong battle on the homestretch, while the 4YO filly, winner of the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2012, was well beaten 13th. If I reflect this result on this year’s picture of the Japan Cup, projected winner on screen will be DARING TACT. As a principle, Japan Cup is a tough race for 3YO fillies as only two 3YO fillies managed to win it. They are GENTILDONNA, whom I previously mentioned, and ALMOND EYE in 2018. It is the question that if DARING TACT is as good as GENTILDONNA and ALMOND EYE. My answer is yes. DARING TACT had run only twice before the G1 (Japanese 1000 Guineas) and she is one of the most unexperienced Oka Sho winners. Apart from her, HAMAKAZE in 1948 and HAGINO TOP LADY in 1980 managed to win Oka Sho as their third start. The ground at Hanshin on the day of Oka Sho was yielding which she had never experienced, but she handled it easily. And she was boxed in at 400m pole in the G1 (Japanese Oaks) and needed to switch route. If she had a smooth run, I assess she should have won the Yushun Himba by two lengths. This is the first time for her to run against older horses, however, I believe she is able to get over the high hurdle. DARING TACT is my favourite. CONTRAIL is the third undefeated winner of Triple Crown, after in 1984 and in 2005. Both of SYMBOLI RUDOLF and DEEP IMPACT experienced the first defeat in their career in the next start after winning the G1 Kikuka Sho, final leg of the Triple Crown. I understand both of them were not stayers and the trip of 3,000m in Kikuka Sho was a tough challenge for them. And Kikuka Sho on 25th October was also a tough and tiring race for CONTRAIL. While I am sure he will run well in Japan Cup, CONTRAIL is my second choice. ALMOND EYE is the horse who needs relatively long gap between races and I am worried Japan Cup may come too soon after the G1 Autumn for her. Her past performances show that she can win the next race only if she has at least a six weeks break, however it is only four weeks from Tenno Sho Autumn. This is the reason why I evaluate her lower than DARING TACT and CONTRAIL. CURREN BOUQUETD'OR, who has been running consistently at the highest level and finished second in Japan Cup last year, is my fourth choice. GLORY VASE should have good chance to finish within first five, as long as he reproduces his form when he won the G1 Hong Kong Vase by three and a half lengths.

SELECTIONS: 5. DARING TACT, 6. CONTRAIL, 2. ALMOND EYE, 1. CURREN BOUQUETD’OR & 15. GLORY VASE

Track Analysis

Tokyo Racecourse

On top of its sprawling track width, and a 525m-plus stretch run, the also features its own sweeping turns, and deep closers with explosive late speed would as well pounce home from out wide. That said, with the homestretch going uphill from 400m to 300m out, front-runners at Tokyo Racecourse have to create some separation on the pursuing pack while homeward-bound, or find it an insuperable task to wire them all the way. Overall, this is still a fair track that favours no particular running style.

For the 2400m Japan Cup, with the first turn merely about 300m after the start, horses breaking from out wide, especially in full fields, will have their work cut out for them. In the 2019 running of this big prize contested on yielding turf, the eventual tierce of SUAVE RICHARD, CURREN BOUQUETD’OR and WAGNERIAN were all prompting the first flight. While both saved ground early, SUAVE RICHARD launched his first-over run on CURREN BOUQUETD’OR at the top of the lane, never relinquished the lead, and sealed the deal, whereas former Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) victor MAKAHIKI, though wolfing down his competition deep stretch, one by one on the far outside, was late to the scene, and checked in fourth.

When the going was listed as firm for live racing on 15th November, yet the inside paths clearly getting all cut-up, front-runners simply got reeled in by the closing pack from out wide that hit the board race after race. With showers teasing the Tokyo area all week long, and mostly cloudy on Sunday as per the latest forecasts, this year’s edition of the Japan Cup could be staged on tricky goings. Hopefully the turf would hold up well, and prominently-placed runners breaking from middle or inside stalls still enjoy a slight edge.

Triple Crown trio go head to head in 2020 Japan Cup

Thursday, 26/11/2020

Sunday’s Japan Cup (2400m) at Tokyo Racecourse this week represents a racing first in Japan. In fact, it’s most likely a racing first, period.

It’s not that it’s the 40th running of the Japan Cup and it’s not that it will be the first run in its four decade history with only a handful of people in the stands.

It’s the fact that the 2400m turf competition has gathered what may be the hottest field of heavyweights in its history, a field of 15 that features an unheard-of three Japanese Triple Crown champions.

It’s headed by wonder mare Almond Eye. She swept Japan’s Fillies’ Triple Crown in 2018 and last year captured the Japan Cup in record time. She’s fresh off a win in the G1 Tenno Sho Autumn (2000m), her record-setting eighth Group 1 win on turf both at home and abroad. And, sadly, as the Lord Kanaloa mare is pegged for retirement, Sunday’s Japan Cup will be her final race.

This year’s Triple Crown winner Contrail returns from his 25 October trio capper in the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger), a grueling 3000m contest that saw him become only the third colt to win the coveted three unbeaten - the G1 Satsuki Sho (2000m), the G1 Tokyo Yushun (2400m) and the Kikuka Sho.

And then we have Daring Tact, who claimed the Fillies’ Triple Crown – the G1 Oka Sho (1600m), the G1 Yushun Himba (2400m) and the G1 Shuka Sho (2000m) - unbeaten this year and returns first-up following her Shuka Sho triumph at on 18 October.

Almond Eye has the experience, both at the distance and the venue. She is six from eight at Tokyo. She has the top speed of the three, but also the tightest schedule, having just raced in the Tenno Sho Autumn on 1 November.

Contrail was given a run for his money in the Kikuka Sho but is said to be well rested. Having run only against his peers, he will compete against older horses for the first time.

Daring Tact is the same, having competed only amid her age group. But, she will have the assigned-weight advantage running under only 117lb.

As all looks well for the Triple Crown trio as they are given their finishing touches, the search is on for which horse can manage an upset or fill out the trio.

This year has at least attracted one brave enough to accept a ticket to the invitational - Way To Paris, seven-year-old grey trained by Chantilly-based Italian handler Andrea Marcialis. Way To Paris captured the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2400m) in June and comes off a ninth in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) on 4 October. He has been highly competitive this year with four top two efforts from seven runs, including one win over 2400m and one over 2500m and is expected to find the fast track of Tokyo to his liking.

But, as is the norm over the past 24 editions of the Japan Cup, it’s the home team that is expected to field the winner.

Glory Vase, winner of last year’s G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (2400m) is fresh with only two starts this year, and is a strong hopeful, although he has no prior experience at Tokyo, but has been successful racing to the left. He returns following a win in the G2 Kyoto Daishoten (2400m) on 11 October.

Then there’s the Deep Impact daughter Curren Bouquetd’or, stablemate to Almond Eye. The four-year-old bay was runner- up in last year’s Japan Cup and finished second in her next two runs, most recently in the G2 Sankei Sho All Comers (2200m) at Nakayama on 27 September.

The four-year-old World Premiere, who has yet to finish out of the top three in his career, and You Can Smile, fifth in last year’s Japan Cup, will both be value with the big three dominating the market.
