Pittsburgh won 22 home games between 1991 and 93; from 2008-10, the Penguins won 21 home contests. -Pittsburgh carries a seven-game home playoff winning streak into tonight’s contest dating back to Game 2 of the 2017 Eastern Conference Final against Ottawa. The only longer home winning streaks in franchise history are a pair of nine-game runs (Apr. 9-May 2, 2008; May 9, 1993-Apr. 26, 1993).

QUICK HITS

1) Dating back to the regular season, the Penguins’ PK unit has killed off 15 of its last 16 times shorthanded (93.8%) over the past four games (4 for 4 in playoffs; 11 for 12 in regular season).

2) Last spring, the Penguins won 10 playoff games at PPG Paints Arena, setting a club single-playoff record for most home wins. Pittsburgh’s 26 home playoff games between 2016 and ‘17 are the most in a two-year span in NHL history. The Penguins played in 49 overall playoff games in that span, the most in a two-year stretch in league history.

3) The Penguins became the first team since the 2003-04 Lightning to have three players finish among the top-10 in NHL scoring ( Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby). It marked the sixth time the Penguins have achieved the feat – the most of any franchise in the expansion era. Courtesy: NHL Morning Skate

TEAM NOTES:

LOVE FOR MUZZ Matt Murray turned in another stellar playoff effort in Game 1, stopping all 24 shots he faced to record his third-straight playoff shutout dating back to last season’s Final. Murray improved his playoff shutout sequence to 206:26 minutes, establishing a franchise record in the process. The previous mark belonged to Ron Tugnutt, who still holds the Pens’ franchise single-playoff mark (154:33 minutes from Apr. 21-29, 2000). COURTESY: Stats Inc./Aaron Spiegel The last opposing player to score on Murray was Nashville’s Viktor Arvidsson at 13:08 of the second period of Game 4 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final. According to the NHL Stats team, Murray became the ninth goalie in NHL playoff history to record a shutout in three-straight games. No goalie has done so in four-straight games. Here is the list Murray joined:

Name Year(s) Team Clint Benedict 1926 MMR John Ross Roach 1929 NYR Frank McCool 1945 TOR Terry Sawchuk 1952-53 DET Brent Johnson 2002 STL Patrick Lalime 2002 OTT Jean-Sebastien Giguere 2003 ANA 2006 ANA Matt Murray 2017-18 PIT

The NHL record for longest shutout sequence is George Hainsworth at 270:08 minutes. According to Stats Inc., here are the top-five longest shutout sequences since 1990:

Name Team Streak Dates Ilya Bryzgalov ANA 249:15 May 1-9, 2006 Patrick Roy COL 231:05 June 8, 1996-April 18, 1997 Curtis Joseph TOR 227:15 May 8, 2000-April 16, 2001 Jean-Sebastien Giguere ANA 217:54 May 5-16, 2003 Brent Johnson STL 207:44 April 18-25, 2002

MUZZ STRONG AT PPG Matt Murray now has a six-game playoff home winning streak following his Game 1 victory. In the playoffs, he has been at his best at PPG Paints Arena, where he is 14-2 all-time. His gaudy home playoff win total is accompanied by a 1.69 goals-against average (28 GA/993 MIN) and a .939 save percentage (430 SV/458 SH). Combining the regular season and playoffs, Murray is 52-11-5 all-time at PPG Paints Arena.

HEY BATTER BATTER Sidney Crosby was the best player on the ice in Game 1, tallying his third career playoff hat trick to tie ’s career franchise record of three. Crosby scored the Pens’ final three goals, making him the third player in club history to record a natural hat trick in the postseason, joining Lemieux and Kevin Stevens (Courtesy: NHL Morning Skate). Crosby’s best goal was his second goal, where he batted the puck out of midair, baseball-style, for the third time since March 21. Thanks to his three-point night, Crosby has moved to within five points of tying Lemieux’s franchise playoff record of 172. Crosby and linemate Bryan Rust were both plus-5. That allowed them to equal the club single-game record in that category, originally set on April 25, 1989 against the Flyers.

PLAYOFF STAR Last spring, Jake Guentzel led the NHL with 13 playoff goals, and equaled the league rookie record with 21 points. He is off to an equally fast start this year, as his four points (1G-3A) in Game 1 represented the highest single-game total (regular season or playoffs) of his career. Guentzel is averaging nearly a point per game in the postseason, with 25 points (14G-11A) in 26 games.

PLAYOFF NOTES OF THE NIGHT The Flyers start the playoffs with a mix of experience and youth. Entering the series, eighteen of the 26 players on the Flyers roster had 617 games of total playoff experience, led by Valtteri Filppula’s 152 and Johnny Oduya’s 107. Brian Elliott had played in 41 playoff games. Eight Flyers are playing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time, including Nolan Patrick, Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny, Travis Sanheim, and Robert Hagg.

Claude Giroux starts the playoffs ranked ninth in Flyers history in playoff scoring with 23 goals and 39 assists for 62 points. He is 13 points away from fifth place on that list.

REGULAR SEASON HIGHLIGHTS On Dec. 3, the Flyers were 8-11-7 and were 28th in the NHL. From that point, they went 34-15-7 over 56 games. Since then they have gone 33-15-7 over 55 games. The run included two separate streaks of 12 games and 8 games without a regulation loss – they went 10-0-2 from Feb. 3-26 and were 5-0-3 in eight games from March 17 – April 1. The Flyers finished the regular season on a 7-1-3 run over their final 11 games.

The Flyers finished the year with 50 goals from their defensemen. It’s the most the Flyers have gotten from their blue line since the 1992-93 season, when the D scored 52 goals.

This was the first season since 1970-71 that the Flyers went a full year without having a player over 100 PIM. Although the Flyers were 29th on the penalty kill this year at 75.8 pct., they were shorthanded just 223 times this year, which was the third-fewest in the league behind Carolina and Columbus.

Claude Giroux became the sixth Flyer in franchise history to post a 100-point season when he picked up his first career hat trick in the season finale against the New York Rangers. Giroux joined Bobby Clarke (3), Mark Recchi (2), Eric Lindros, Bill Barber and Rick MacLeish in reaching the milestone, and became the first Flyer to do it since Lindros posted 115 points in 1995-96. He also became just the third Flyer to finish second in the league in scoring, joining Bobby Clarke (2x) and Eric Lindros; the Flyers have never had a Hart Trophy winner. Giroux finished the season with 34 goals and 68 assists for 102 points, all of which were career highs. He jumped from 10th to 5th in team history in scoring, and moved into a tie for third all-time in assists. In his last 29 games dating back to February 28, Giroux has 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points.

Jake Voracek also established a new career high in scoring with 85 points on the year, surpassing his 81 from the 2014-15 season, as did Sean Couturier, who more than doubled his scoring totals from a year ago (14-20-34 to 31-45-76). The Flyers have three players over 70 points for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Couturier finished at a plus-34, the highest total for a Flyer since the 1998-99 season (Lindros, +35).

Shayne Gostisbehere finished fourth among NHL defensemen in scoring with 13 goals and 52 assists for 65 points. It’s the highest- scoring season by a Flyers defenseman since Garry Galley had 70 in 1993-94, and the 52 assists are the third-highest total in team history for defensemen (Mark Howe 58 in 1985-86, Galley’s 60 in 1993-94). Gostisbehere joins Howe and Eric Desjardins as the only Flyers defensemen to finish fourth or better in defensemen scoring in a season.

Ivan Provorov shared the league lead in goals by defensemen with 17 (Dougie Hamilton, Victor Hedman) and in doing so became the first defenseman in franchise history to have even a piece of the league lead in defenseman goals. Provorov nearly tripled his goal total from his rookie season (6).
