n its inaugural season, two student-athletes from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) were named finalists for the prestigious Hobey IBaker Memorial Award Thursday as Nebraska Omaha junior forward Josh Archibald and St. Cloud State senior forward Nic Dowd are two of 10 NCAA players up for college hockey’s top honor. Archibald, who hails from Brainerd, Minn., finished the regular season second in the nation and first in the NCHC with 29 goals, just one behind fellow finalist of Boston College, while tallying five more goals than any other player. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect compiled 43 points in 34 games, adding 14 assists to tie for seventh nationally in points and tying for first among NCHC players. Archibald was one of just four players in the country to record multiple hat tricks during the year and was the lone NCHC player to do so. The speedy winger tied for second in the NCAA with six game-winning goals, which led all NCHC players, while scoring eight of his 29 goals on the power play. Archibald recorded six multi-goal games and 13 multi-point games while posting a +5 rating. A First-Team All-NCHC selection and a finalist for NCHC Player of the Year (to be awarded Thursday night), the Maverick captured the NCHC scoring title with 32 points in conference play, five more than any other player, while his 21 goals were eight more than any NCHC player in league play. Dowd, a team captain for the Huskies, led SCSU to the inaugural Penrose Cup and NCHC regular-season title while compiling 36 points in 34 regular-season games, which tied for fifth in the NCHC. The Los Angeles Kings prospect notched 19 goals to tie for 14th nationally and rank third in the NCHC, while handing out 17 assists. Also a First-Team All-NCHC selection, Dowd scored nine of his goals on the power play to lead the NCHC and tie for fifth nationally, while adding two more short-handed and notching four game-winners to tie for second in the NCHC. The Huntsville, Ala., native compiled a +15 rating, which was fifth in the conference, while playing on SCSU’s top power play and penalty kill units. Dowd, who is also a finalist for NCHC Player of the Year, was named to the NCHC’s Scholar-Athlete Team, as well. The pre-medicine major recorded 12 multi-point games and two multi-goal games on the year, while in conference play his 13 goals tied for second in the NCHC. The Top Ten Hobey Baker Finalists are compiled from balloting from all 59 Division I college hockey head coaches and by an on-line fan ballot. The Top Ten list will now be voted on by the 27-member Selection Committee and a second round of fan balloting (March 20 – March 30), to determine the Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists (to be announced April 2, 2014 at noon ET) for this year’s Hobey Baker Award. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff Format NCHC Frozen Faceoff and Tournament Champions

he NCHC Tournament consisted of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 14-16). The T four higher seeds hosted the four lower seeds in a best two-out- of-three format. Seed #1 hosted Seed #8, Seed #2 hosted Seed #7, Seed #3 hosted Seed #6, and Seed #4 hosted Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Tar- get Center in Minneapolis for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 21. (Semifinal games were reseeded based on the final regular-season standings). The winners of the two semifinal games then met in the Championship Game on Saturday, March 22, which was won by Denver, for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games faced each other in the third-place game earlier in the day.
