A Pleasure to Serve by Anita Hulo, Commodore If you attended the Quarterly Membership Meeting in June, you heard about the need for volunteers to serve on the MRYC Board of Governors and as line officers of the Club. I’m using this space to remind every MRYC member that now is the time to submit your application for a board position or line officer. The new MRYC fiscal year begins 1 Nov 2017. You can find applications on the desk in the hallway as you enter the Club and online at www.milesriveryc.org. It is truly a rewarding experience. If you haven’t registered online, it’s a convenient way to see your statements and all the Club documents, as well as the calendar of events and member directory. We’re working on an online Member Feedback Form, which will also be on the Club website for member convenience. If you choose the comment cards that come with your bill, you can certainly continue to use those too. OK, enough business, and on to the 4th of July celebration at MRYC this year! Thanks to F/C John Hines and member Lee Brown who are organizing to raft out on the water for a better view of the fireworks and to R/C Bob Luff and V/C Glenn Higgins, who are making plans for the safety of those who choose to watch from land. I hope all members who come enjoy the 4th at the Club. All the fun games throughout the day make for fun for the whole family from crab races to corn hole, the fire pit and eventually the fireworks. I bet the little ones will sleep well that night! Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything you want to talk to me about. My email is [email protected] and my cell is 301-613-9801. We can coordinate a meeting at the Club. 4th of July in the Sixties by Glenn Higgins, Vice Commodore I'm sure you can imagine that a lot of my youth was spent at the MRYC pool. Back in the day it just didn't get any better than the Fourth of July. My mother, brothers, sister and I would spend the day at the pool. By this point of the summer all the regulars had established "their table" and the pool deck was a neighborhood of mothers, kids, picnic lunches and assorted sundries. Beach towels, snorkels and masks, inflated rafts and all manner of pool toys would be scattered about between the tables and the fence. There was no snack bar at the pool, nor was there a great need. The coolers full of sandwiches and snacks were all assembled under each table. I do remember a drink vending machine at the end of the pool house. You probably haven't seen one like this recently. I believe it charged ten cents. After making your selection a waxed paper cup would drop down into a compartment, crushed ice would rattle down into the cup and then a nozzle would dispense your soda. In my memory it rarely went smoothly. The cup would come in a kilter (or not at all) and the ice maker was generally out of order. If you were lucky enough that all went as planned the paper cup would generally "melt” just about on the last sip. Being at the pool when the Coca Cola repairman showed up was always a bonus . After making the necessary repairs, lots of "samples" would be dispensed to the throng of anticipating children. If you have ever witnessed seagulls or pelicans around a fish cleaning station you probably have a great idea of what faced this overly pestered repair guy. In the evening, about the same time as pool closing, my mom would produce a bag of clothes for each of my siblings and me. My brothers and I would generally be dressed in similar clothes – khaki shorts, short sleeved shirt and tennis shoes. The shorts came with a brass belt clip designed to carry a small jackknife, which we did openly. My how times have changed. The Club was a great mass of people all anticipating the fireworks display. Dinner would be served in the Ball Room (now the Commodores Room) and blankets would be spread on the lawn. MRYC put on the Fireworks back in those days with little or no outside financial support. Members of the Board would make a trip outside the state and purchase essentially contraband fireworks. Several stories still are told around the Club of these trips and the concerned men bouncing along the roads with a pickup truck or trailer full of explosives. At dusk the designated group would launch the Fireworks from the shoreline that is now Martingham. The explosions seemed to be right over our heads but I'm sure were outside of the "A" dock area. Of course "A" dock did not exist then. The men on the far shore could be seen with road flares igniting the mortars. We could actually watch the fuses burn down and launch the rockets. After about fifteen minutes it was all over. We would run around the grounds playing with friends for another half hour or so to allow the inevitable traffic jam to clear Yacht Club Road and Route 33. The following day, it was all but forgotten. We would play our games of tag. We would search for pennies thrown into the pool by the adults. We would dread the rest breaks. And we would anticipate the arrival of the Fireman's annual Carnival. We had it made.

Vintage Pram to Join Opti Fleet

An optimist pram nearly half a century old will join the Junior Sailing Program this summer. It will be sailed by Atticus and Leonardo Forloney. The boat was originally found leaning against the side of a house in Island Heights, NJ 35 years ago. It belonged to an elderly couple whose grandchildren literally dragged the boat through the streets to sail on the Toms River. The boat was found by Charles and Marlen Binder, MRYC members who lived in the area at that time. It was purchased for the grand sum of $50.00 and was subsequently used by their daughters, Katherine and Victoria as a “fun” boat when they weren’t racing Lasers or Blue Jays. The boat was named "No ¢" by some prankish members of the Toms River NJ Yacht Club junior sailing program. The name remains today. Research revealed that the boat was constructed at the now defunct Snug Harbor Boat Works, St. Petersburg, Florida at a time when building Optis was transitioning from plywood to fiberglass. It is listed in their 1970 catalog and inventory. The hull is a bright orange fiberglass although the spars are made of wood. Restoration of the hull is taking place at Higgins Yacht Yard, St Michaels. The wooden spars are being replaced by aluminum. The original rudder, tiller and centerboard will remain but will be coated. New sails were purchased at Annapolis Performance Sailing as was much of the hardware. Atticus and Leo are the sons of Katherine Binder and her husband Robert Forloney making them the third generation of this family to be in command of this pram. It should be easy to spot on the water with its bright orange hull standing out in stark contrast to mostly white hulls of the Optimist Pram fleet.
