SKIP SEASON 2008? and I met at the Red Robin in Enfield after work and enjoyed their burgers and steak fries. E skip started off with a bang this year with It was nice to meet Russ for the first time and digital TV stations being logged on channels since he will be up this way again, with enough two through five and some highband TV and advance notice, I hope we can convince a few Weather radio DX also logged. But then, other WTFDA members to wander by and join beginning in mid-June, skip took a nosedive. us. The openings were spotty with the MUF shooting up into FM for a few minutes and then MORE ABOUT THE SONY XDR-F1HD dropping and dying out completely. We all know about the mid-June drop-off in E skip Jim Pizzi posted this on the tvfmdx list because it happens every year. Knowing about recently: “I got my Sony XDR-F1HD it doesn’t make the experience any easier for replacement today and spent a little time most DXers since the season is short to begin checking it out against HDT-1X. Sony is better with, but most of us understand that Es returns with adjacent rejection (minor slop on 99.5 for the second half of the season eventually. from 99.3 with HDT-1X and perfectly clean on Let’s hope for a great second half of the the Sony--same with 97.3 into 97.1) . Using a season. quality Maspro splitter to give equal signal to both units. HD lock equal on strong signals but MEMBERS AND MORE! HDT-1X quicker with weaker stations, same with RDS. Sony does better cutting through HD From the period of May 18th through June side channel noise-hissy with the Sangean but 13th we had renewals from John Griffiths nice and clean with the Sony with a moderate (ON), Andrew MacKenzie (NY), Dan Oetting signal. Sangean sensitivity just a bit better (MD), Steve Naetzker (CA), David Sinclair (could be signal to noise ratio better)--very (BC), Mike Lapinski (NY), Rob Ross (ON), weak signals cleaner, more understandable. Dave Williams (OR), Dan Oglethorpe (LA), Signal meter a plus with the Sony. Sheryl Paskiewicz (WI), Randy Zerr (FL). Remote works well and large too compared Jeff Kruszka (TX), Bill Eckberg (IL), Rod to Sangean. Programmed Sony's 20 presets O’Connor (ME), Fred Laun (MD), George across the band so getting around fast during a Mileon (MA), William Lindsay (WA), Steven big opening shouldn't be a problem. Display Ponder (TX), Al Tobia (CA) and Joseph read out OK, icons a tad smaller on Sony but a Esser (NJ). lot of info to display on the slightly smaller Rod O’Connor wrote that this year marks screen. Over all I'm very impressed.” his 31st year in the WTFDA. He writes “Dying to read up on that Sony F1 HD AM/FM tuner. NRC CONVENTION 2008 Perfect candidate for my upcoming economic stimulus check…after gas, heating oil and Could you please print in your next bulletin hiking boots.” Well, I can thoroughly that the National Radio Club is having its 75 understand about the gas and heating oil. We’ll anniversary/convention in Pittsburgh on August have a little more about that Sony HD tuner 29 - 31 at the Greentree Holiday Inn, 401 shortly. Holiday Drive, Pittsburgh 15220. Phone: 1-412- One Friday evening a few weeks ago, Jeff 922-8100. Mention NRC RATE OF $75 + TAX Rostron and I met up with WTFDAer Mark up to 3 in a room. Registration fee is $45, Casey at the NEWS meeting at the old Harley check to National Radio Cllub. Mail to JOHN Hotel in Enfield and had a pretty good time MALICKY, 995 Shadycrest Rd, Pittsburgh, PA talking about DX and listening to an engineer 15216-3046 BY 8/15. Sunday PM WILL be a from tell us about the baseball game… the Pirates against the IBOC that he put on their FM stations. I really Milwaukee Brewers at 1:35. The Editor’s Note

The E-Skip season has gotten cranking with several nice openings during the first half of June throughout the eastern half of the country, including events on May 29th and June 4th producing reports of E-Skip stations logged on TV Channel 7. Hopefully everyone by now has caught some. Let’s cross our fingers that July brings some more worthwhile openings, and perhaps tropo will increase as well. ______

Both Es openings detailed here featured signals of incredible strength. All but my strongest locals got clobbered, especially on 6/4. I was surprised to receive several signals, some in stereo, through many of my local IBOC sideband frequencies that I thought until now were beyond reach, all on my Bose without an amp. I also had a country station that I was not able to identify over WEZX-106.9 which is a pretty strong signal here. The tropo opening of June 7 also featured unusually strong signals.

Wow. Who flipped the switch? The Sporadic-E Season (“Es”) finally arrived, a bit late but welcome, on May 13th here in Memphis. For three days, the MUF didn’t seem to peak too much above the 10 meter band (28 MHz), but by the 19th, we were off to the races on 6 meters. The first few days of the Season were unremarkable – the East Coast, some Midwest, and a nice smattering of double-hops to the West Coast. I did stumble across someone operating in a very sparsely-populated grid in Ontario, EO40. Using only a Yaesu FT-100D (not my favorite radio) and a halo made by my almost neighbor, Phil, KU4AB, WB8BZK/VE3 aided a few lucky folks snag a really rare grid. Doubtless, the biggest event of May Mid-continent was the opening of May 29th. Late in the evening UTC, 2 meters (144 MHz) opened wide to the Eastern Seaboard. The APRS map, which plots paths on 144.390 MHz, looked great:

I worked over a dozen stations on 2 meters in that opening, but not one new grid. That part of the country is pretty well picked over for me (though, I still need Delaware), but it was a fun opening, anyway. It also hinted of a great June to come (more on that next month, after I close out June).

* * *

What some hams consider the biggest “contest” of the year, Field Day, is almost upon us. Field Day, June 28-29, is the weekend when hams camp in parks, fields, parking lots, or even on mountain tops, to make as many contacts as they can, starting Saturday afternoon. While, for many, Field Day means bug bites, sunburns, and feigning baths and sleep, many hams revel in the competitive spirit, or just fellowship and

47 cooking out (my friend Lance, N4GMT spends the weekend by the smoker. His BBQed corned beef is amazing – simply amazing). Field Day is fun, and can be a useful way of picking up a new grid here and there. Many serious contest stations seem to ignore VHF. It’s odd. Under the Rules, the “station” is almost free, and can yield valuable points. Whether 6m opens, though, is always anyone’s guess. Assuming I am able (knee surgery this week), I plan to ride my bicycle to a park for the event, and set up a small HF station run on solar-charged batteries. I am not going for points, just fun. I hope the weather is nice!

Not much to write about in May on 6m. I spent most of the month listening to not much, while other areas, at least from the cluster, had some good openings. I did hear a few stations from the Caribbean: NP4A, HI3TEJ, 9Y4D, 9Z4BM, PJ2BVU, 8P9TS, and KP2BH. The one I needed for a new grid, PV8AZ (FJ92) was in for 30 seconds and vanished. Also spent a lot of time listening for FJ5DX (St. Maartin) for a new country, but it never made it up here, although spotted about once a day. Nothing from Europe – although stations in Maine and the Maritimes did work into Europe. Only one station worked on double-hop to the West – W6OMF in CM98. Everything else was either to the south or the north of me.

48 14th ANNUAL MADISON-MILWAUKEE DX GTG

The first Madison-Milwaukee DX Get-together took place on a cloudy day, but late in the afternoon the sun came out and the day turned beautiful. The same was true for the 13th annual event. It rained briefly during the fourth GTG, only to once again turn sunny late in the day. During the other 10 previous events the weather was beautiful! And then there was the 14th gathering which took place in Madison, Wisconsin on August 18, 2007---

For those of you not familiar with the Madison-Milwaukee, it is a one-day, regional, all-band event for DXers that has been held every third Saturday in August since 1994. The first ten GTGs were held in Madison, with Tim Noonan and Bill Dvorak alternating hosting duties. Following Tim’s relocation to the Milwaukee area, the practice of alternating sites between Madison and Milwaukee began, and the first Milwaukee event, GTG #11, was held in 2004.

When 2007 rolled around, this rotation brought the 14th annual event back to Madison. The location was Bill and Nina Dvorak’s “new” home, a house that Bill had grown up in and that had been in the Dvorak family for over 50 years. The home is in a residential area built on a drumlin (a glacier-carved elongated hill) within the city limits of Madison. The scenic, approximately 1/3-acre lot and two-story home provide plenty of space inside and out, and the newly-built attached two-car garage would serve as a nice staging area for the gathering. Days before the event, the tree-populated backyard became the site of a temporary antenna farm, with longwires, an EWE and an Eavesdropper featured, and an area within the garage became a space to demonstrate radios.

After weeks of preparation, August 18, 2007 arrived. As always, events like this are at the mercy of the weather. But, as an old Wisconsin saying goes: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes and it will change.” On this day, the weather was to change-- every 15 minutes it got worse! From threatening skies to steady rain to torrential downpour, all accompanied by lightning! Some guests arrived so soaked that Nina had to offer them a towel to dry off.

However, despite the weather, what soon became obvious was that attendees were settling in for a great time of DX camaraderie. The garage with its 16 X 7-foot screen covering the door opening (allowing the cool air in) was a pleasant gathering point, with its party decorations, refreshments and various display/handout items (including back issues of VUD and WTFDA fact sheets). The room was soon buzzing with DX talk.

By far the highlight of the day was a trip to Stan Broome’s storefront antique radio museum in neighboring Sun Prairie. The many beautiful old receivers, accessories, and other radio-related items represent just the tip of the iceberg as far as Stan’s lifelong collection goes. Our first trip to his museum was enjoyed by all who took it.

Because of the lightning, many receiver demonstrations had to be cancelled, leaving the antenna farm idle. We did have an HD receiver demonstration in the garage and a portable AM shootout on the porch, but that was about it for demonstration activity.

The GTG dinner once again was held at the Esquire Club, as it had been five other times in the past. As always, food and service were great, and attendees had a very enjoyable dinner. During the after- dinner program, Ed Dvorak, who had just turned 95 two weeks earlier (and whose accomplishments in fixing CB radios are legendary) was recognized as the oldest attendee to ever come to the Madison-Milwaukee. Also recognized were nine attendees who had made at least 10 Get-togethers (led by Jim Albrecht who has made all fourteen!). They were presented with a certificate which we called the “’At-TEN-dance’Award.” Door prizes this year were provided by Universal Radio, Clear Channel Madison, Rubber City Radio Group Inc. (Akron OH), and the WTFDA’s own (and past attendee) Scott Fybush.

The night session back at the house featured Get-together cake and coffee and more DX camaraderie. Unfortunately, some of the worst weather came during this period, and many attendees left early (more than 5 inches of rain fell this day). The last attendees left at around 11:30. Thankfully, everyone reported reaching home safely.

So because the weather was so poor, how much of a drop of attendance occurred for the 14th event compared to the previous ones? The answer-- we had another record high attendance! There were 49 DXers at the 14th GTG, up from the record 41 two years previous. Add in the ten family members and friends of DXers in attendance, and the grand total was 59, also a record, up from 50 two years earlier.

The most impressive statistic— leading up to the event 45 DXers said they would attend, and despite the weather all 45 attended! One who said he might attend did, and three walk-ons brought the final total up to 49. Further good news-- the addition of 21 DXers who attended for the first time bodes well for the future of this event.

Our list of those we would like to thank, as always, starts with those who attended. Our sincere thank- yous are even more so this time around, in recognition of attendees’ above-and-beyond efforts to make this year’s event. Special thank-yous go to Madison DXers Mark Taylor and Jim Green who constructed the antenna farm, among other things; to Ira and John Ebeling who helped in so many ways both before and during the GTG; to Stan Broome and Grant Steger for their graciousness in hosting the tour of Stan’s museum, and to Dave Legler, official GTG photographer whose pictures appear on these pages.

The weather conditions of August 18, 2007 were trying for the attendees, hosts and organizers of the Madison-Milwaukee DX Get-together. The overwhelming success of the GTG is validation that we are, and have long been, on the right track. Above all, this is a social event, promoting camaraderie

50 among DXers. All feedback was positive, and already many have expressed their commitment to attend the 2008 edition.

The 15th annual Madison-Milwaukee Get-together for DXers and Radio Enthusiasts will be held on Saturday August 16, 2008. The event returns to the Milwaukee area with Tim and Jill Noonan as hosts, and will take part at their home in the south suburb of Oak Creek.
