So, in 1597 Elizabeth I ordered that not only should the records of baptisms, marriages and burials be recorded in a bound register but that an annual transcript from the parish register should be copied onto a single sheet of parchment and sent to the diocesan registrar, i.e. the bishop. These copies, prepared by the incumbent or the churchwardens, became known as ‘Bishops’ Transcripts’ (BTs). Hardwicke's Act of 1754 resulted in more complete transcripts. After George Rose's 1812 Act ordering that baptisms, marriages and burials be recorded in separate, pre-printed registers, the bishops' transcripts became essentially duplicates of the original registers. Information Provided by Bishops' Transcripts In theory they should mirror the entries in the parish registers but the information recorded can sometimes be different, especially prior to 1812. Nevertheless they can be a valuable alternative source: as they may cover gaps in the original parish registers where the registers are in a fragile condition where there is difficulty in interpreting handwriting as they may be written in a different hand to the registers. Page | 2 www.explorethepast.co.uk Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service Worcestershire Bishops' Transcripts If a parish fell within the Diocese of Worcester there should be a set of bishops’ transcripts covering the period of time that it remained in the Diocese. It is important to remember that the Diocese covers a different area to the County and also covered a much larger area than it does today. Consequently, you are likely to find transcripts for parishes in other counties, particularly Warwickshire and Gloucestershire. Many marriages recorded in the transcripts up to 1840 may be found in Boyd's Marriage Index (First and Second Miscellaneous Series). Limitations of Bishops' Transcripts The transcripts start in 1598 but very few survive before 1608. In 1646, during the Commonwealth, the office of Bishop was abolished and was not resurrected until 1660. This means that there are no transcripts for this period. After 1837, when Civil Registration of births, marriages and deaths was introduced, marriage registers in particular were sent to the registrar rather than the bishop. The importance of producing the bishop’s transcripts gradually declined until they ceased to exist after 1946. Using this Hand List to Find a Microfilm This hand list is divided into 2 parts: c.1600-1700 (arranged alphabetically by parish) c. 1701-1946 (arranged numerically by BA number) Page | 3 www.explorethepast.co.uk Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service Finding Bishops’ Transcripts between c.1600-1700: 1. Find the relevant parish in the alphabetical sequence in Part 1 of this hand list and make a note of the Film No. 2. The alphabetical sequence only gives you the date range for a particular parish. If you wish to check whether there is a Bishops’ transcript for a specific year, you need to consult the bound, brown place index to Bishops’ Transcripts found in the Index Area. 3. When you have used the hand list to find the film you require, go to the drawers marked ‘Bishops’ Transcripts’ in the cabinets. The films are arranged in numerical order. Take out the film, leaving one of your markers in its place. Finding Bishops’ Transcripts between c.1701-1837: 1. Find the relevant parish and year in the bound, brown place index to Bishops’ Transcripts found in the Index Area. 2. Make a note of the full reference number, e.g. BA 2015/280/83. 3. Go to Part 2 of this hand list and look down until you find the Ref. No. you need. 4. e.g. The reference for Abberton in 1719 is BA 2015/280/83 and the corresponding film number is 72. Page | 4 www.explorethepast.co.uk Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service Finding Bishops’ Transcripts between c.1837-1946: Go to part 2 of this hand list. Find the relevant parish or deanery in the parish column. Please note this list is not in alphabetical order and a parish or deanery may be listed more than once throughout the list. • Barnmoor Farm, Claverdon
Barnmoor Farm, Claverdon These are the reminiscences of Tim Boddington who was brought up at Barnmoor Farm, Kington Lane, Claverdon in Warwickshire. It was bought at auction (see below) in September 1945 by my father, Roddy Boddington, who was previously farming at Mistletoe Farm, Five Ways, Hatton, and we moved in November. He wanted a bigger property to expand his business. This is the earliest known picture of Barnmoor Farm house and it was taken in August 1947 by Cyril Richardson, brother in law of Katharine Boddington. It shows the farm before my father made a number of alterations to the house and before the concrete Dutch barn was erected. The two original chicken houses are visible on the right. My father erected these – in fact I recall that he brought them in sections from Mistletoe Farm and re-erected them together with a smaller chicken shed located beyond them and not visible in this picture. The track this side of the hedge in the foreground was fenced to use as a route for the cows the go to and from other fields. I well recall – I still have the bruises to remind me – that on one occasion when I was perhaps 6 or 7, driving the cows down this track, the last cow turned around, put her head down and picked me up on her horns and threw me over the hedge! She then resumed her amble to the cow shed. I landed on a pile of lime that had been put in the garden field ready for spreading.

Home Choice Plus has been designed to improve access to affordable housing. The advantage is that you only register once and the scheme allows you to view and bid on available properties for which you are eligible across all of the districts. Home Choice Plus has been developed by a number of Local Authorities and Housing Associations working in partnership. Home Choice Plus is a way of allocating housing and advertising other housing options across the participating Local Authority areas. (Home Choice Plus will also be used for advertising other housing options such as private rents and intermediate rents). This booklet explains how to look for housing across all of the Districts involved in this scheme. Please see website for further information. Who is eligible to join the Home Choice Plus register? • Some people travelling to the United Kingdom are not entitled to Housing Association accommodation on the basis of their immigration status. • You may be excluded if you have a history of serious rent arrears or anti social behaviour.

  • Lime Kilns in Worcestershire
Lime Kilns in Worcestershire Nils Wilkes Acknowledgements I first began this project in September 2012 having noticed a number of limekilns annotated on the Ordnance Survey County Series First Edition maps whilst carrying out another project for the Historic Environment Record department (HER). That there had been limekilns right across Worcestershire was not something I was aware of, particularly as the county is not regarded to be a limestone region. When I came to look for books or documents relating specifically to limeburning in Worcestershire, there were none, and this intrigued me. So, in short, this document is the result of my endeavours to gather together both documentary and physical evidence of a long forgotten industry in Worcestershire. In the course of this research I have received the help of many kind people. Firstly I wish to thank staff at the Historic Environmental Record department of the Archive and Archaeological Service for their patience and assistance in helping me develop the Limekiln Database, in particular Emma Hancox, Maggi Noke and Olly Russell. I am extremely grateful to Francesca Llewellyn for her information on Stourport and Astley; Simon Wilkinson for notes on Upton-upon-Severn; Gordon Sawyer for his enthusiasm in locating sites in Strensham; David Viner (Canal and Rivers Trust) in accessing records at Ellesmere Port; Bill Lambert (Worcester and Birmingham Canal Trust) for involving me with the Tardebigge Limekilns Project; Pat Hughes for her knowledge of the lime trade in Worcester and Valerie Goodbury
