The Shame of Poverty [BIJU ABRAHAM] ___________________________ THE SHAME OF POVERTY A Comparative Analysis Of The Shaming Experience In Welfare Programmes Provided By Public And Private Institutions Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences 1 Abstract Abstract In recent years there has been an increase in the public expenditure for providing welfare assistance to the people. With the UN convention making the access to social welfare to maintain a decent standard of living as a fundamental human right, the government intervention has increased not only to reduce the general poverty but for enhancing the human capital. due to the universal coverage, the huge number of participants and the insufficient government resources, in addition to the public institutions, private institutions are also participate in its implementation. Mid Day Meal Scheme in India one of the welfare programmes covering all the school going students from class one to class eight are aimed to prevent class room hunger, increase school enrolment and retention and to enhance quality of education. The free meal is provided to students of public school and also students who are enrolled in private aided schools. There are a number of studies which examine the shame experienced by the beneficiaries of the social benefit at different stages of implementation. These studies mainly covers the public institutions. Hence this study is undertaken to make a comparative analysis of the shame experienced by the beneficiaries of social welfare programmes provided through public and private institutions. The study was carried out in two schools, one public school and one private school situated the District of Wayanad, Kerala state, India. Information were collected from the students, teachers and the cooks through in-depth interview. The study found that the scheme is shaming to the beneficiaries in one way or the other. The selection of beneficiaries, the poor quality material used for cooking, the poor quality of the meal, monotonous menu, the process of distribution of food, lack of sufficient infrastructure including the lack of safe drinking water are all shaming to the beneficiaries. The meager fund allotted is the main hindrance in providing a decent meal to the students. 2 The students also experience shame in various stages of the receipt of the benefit. The students of the private school are forced to stand in the open space even in adverse climate. There is lack of discipline during distribution, unequal distribution and at times insufficient quantify of food. Since there is no alternative to what is provided, those students who cannot take the food for various reasons including their religious belief have to go hungry. The study shows that the experience of shame is more in private school compared to that of the public school. The public school adopt a few strategies to reduce the feeling of shame or the stigma associated with the meal. They active involvement of the benefit providers at different stage of implementation, the community participation and improvement in the quality of the meal are some of the strategies adopted to reduce the feeling of shame. More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

    Chembra Peak Kerala Chembra Peak is the highest point on the Wayanad Hill Range Famous for the steep and rewarding trek that leads up to the peak, and a heart-shaped lake which falls on the way, the Chembra Peak is the highest point on the Wayanad Hill Range in Kerala, a part of Western Ghats mountain range. Beautiful views of the surrounding tea estates that encroach upon the lower regions of the Wayanad ranges, can be seen along the trek. Chembra Peak Trek Starting Point: Trekkers to Chembra peak arrive mostly from the nearby town Meppadi. From Meppadi, several jeeps run that take visitors to the Chembra Trek starting point. Visitors arriving from Kalpetta travel to Meppadi first. The trek provides views of the entire Wayanad district, and some hill ranges even beyond it. The trek can be divided into sections, which mark difficulty levels, and make it easier for trekkers to decide how far they can go up during the trek. 1. Starting point to watch tower : It is a fairly easy trek to the watch-tower, and provides great views of the surrounding greenery. The distance to the watch-tower is 0.62 miles (1 kilometer). This easy trek lasts up to twenty minutes. 2. Watch tower till the end of the forest : From the watch tower, a small forest starts that soon leads to an open grassland. 3. Forest to heart-shaped lake : The walk now is moderately difficult, and leads to a beautiful heart-shaped lake. The lake is called Hridaya Saras in local language.

J D Hook. an endemic and endangered orchid of the Western Ghats of Kerala. India through conversion of axillary buds to protocorm-like bodies (PLBs). and subsequent plant regeneration was achieved. Growth regulators and sugar displayed significant influence in the induction of PLBs. In vitro derived shoots from field grown rhizomes of Ipsea cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with 13.3 ~ N6-benzyladenine (BA) containing 2% commercial grade sugar turned the axillary buds to PLBs within 25 days. and developed a mean of 33.1 PLBs within 50 days. Kinetin (KIN) did not induce PLBs, but facilitated axillary bud proliferation. Transfer of PLBs on medium having same concentration of BA and sugar facilitated rapid multiplication. and developed a mean of 47.5 PLBs. No decline of PLB proliferation was observed up to 10th subculture. Half strength MS medium with 6.97 ~ KIN facilitated conversion of 98% PLBs to plantlets. On this media, a mean of 5.8 roots were also developed per shoot. Shoots developed bulbs during culture were grown to rhizomes.
