  • Our Port History to Modern Day August 2013
Port History to Modern Day S:\Port Information\Our Port History to Modern Day August 2013 2 EARLY HISTORY OF THE PORT OF TAURANGA 1290 Judge Wilson in his Sketches of Ancient Maori Life and History records that the canoe Takitumu carrying immigrants from Hawaiiki arrived in approximately 1290 AD and found Te Awanui (as Tauranga was then named) in the possession of a tribe of aborigines whose name, Puru Kopenga, or full net testified to the rich harvest to be drawn from the surrounding waters. 1769 In November, Captain James Cook passed close to Tauranga (pronounced Towrangha ) but did not enter the harbour. 1828 Probably the first European vessel to visit Tauranga was the missionary schooner Herald that called during this year. 1853 Captain Drury in HMS Pandora surveyed and charted the coast and harbour. 1864 Under the Marine Board Act of 1863, the Auckland Provincial Government Superintendent appointed the first pilot Captain T S Carmichael on 8 December 1864. He fixed leading buoys and marks in position to define the navigable channel, and his first piloting assignment was to bring HMS Esk into the harbour. The first house at Mount Maunganui was built for him late in 1866, to replace the tent in which he had lived during the previous two years. Copies of his early diaries are held in Tauranga s Sladden Library. Tauranga is probably the only Port in the country to experience a naval blockade. The Government of the day, fearful that arms would be run to hostile Maori warriors, imposed the blockade by notice in the New Zealand Gazette dated 2 April 1864.

  • Regional Variation in New Zealand English Is Something of a Conundrum
Regional variation in NZ English Regional variation in New Zealand English is something of a conundrum. Although a dialect of the Southland/Otago region is well-known and documented (Bartlett 1992, 2003; Hay, Maclagan and Gordon 2008), linguists have yet to find concrete evidence of other regional New Zealand English dialects. Yet the general New Zealand public are often adamant that there are regional differences in how New Zealand English is spoken. Folklinguistic evidence of regional variation Studies dealing with societal attitudes towards and beliefs about a language are called folklinguistic studies. Folklinguistic studies (Gordon 1997; Nielsen and Hay 2005) show that New Zealanders do tend to believe that there are regional differences in New Zealand English but, when asked to provide information about these differences, comments usually refer to characteristics of the region or the people living in the region rather than aspects of the language itself. For example, a study by Nielsen and Hay (2005) invited University students to rate their perceptions of New Zealand English in different regions according to its ‘pleasantness' and 'correctness' and to annotate a map of New Zealand with comments about speech in different regions. Although regions were rated differently, the ratings appeared to be based on stereotypes of the regions in question, rather than on any identifiable linguistic differences. People tended to rate their own region more highly for pleasantness and correctness and notes on the map mainly consisted of stereotypical descriptions such as ‘official’ for Wellington and ‘farmer speech’ for Taranaki. This inability to identify specific linguistic features that differ from one geographical area to the next stands in contrast to New Zealanders’ awareness of a ‘rolled’, or rather postvocalic /r/, in Southland.

  • Comparison of Liquefaction-Induced Land Damage and Geomorphic Variability in Avonside, New Zealand
6th International Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering 1-4 November 2015 Christchurch, New Zealand Comparison of Liquefaction-induced Land Damage and Geomorphic Variability in Avonside, New Zealand S.H. Bastin1, M.C. Quigley2, K. Bassett3 Abstract Field mapping, LiDAR, and aerial photography are used to map surface liquefaction-induced lateral spreading fissures and aligned sand blow vents formed during the 22 February 2011 Mw 6.2 Christchurch earthquake. Classification of the study area into 164 polygons enables comparison of liquefaction severity metrics including linear liquefaction feature density, ejecta surface area, and horizontal and vertical ground surface displacements with geomorphic metrics including distance from the downslope free-face, surface elevation, sediment type, and the liquefaction potential index (LPI). Preliminary analyses indicate (i) mean fissure density decreases with increasing distance from the free face at distances of 0-50 m, no relationship is observed at distances >50 m, (ii) mean horizontal ground displacement increases with increasing LPI, and (iii) vertical subsidence is invariant with elevation, implying that other factors (e.g. LPI) may contribute to a complex liquefaction strain field. The basic geology and geomorphology are derived from LiDAR and modern river morphology. Comparison of the liquefaction data with geomorphic mapping indicates geomorphic mapping may be applied to determine the likely distribution of sediments susceptible to liquefaction. Introduction Cyclic shearing of loosely consolidated, fluid saturated sediments during earthquake-induced ground motion results in excess pore-water pressures and reduced shear strength in the affected media. Liquefaction occurs as the grain arrangement collapses causing pore water pressures to exceed the confining pressure (Seed & Idriss, 1982; Idriss & Boulanger, 2008).
