BACKGROUND

A progressive city municipality located in the Kansas City area needed to reduce their increasing health care costs. With a commitment to building and maintaining a vibrant and modern city, the City’s executive team recognized that healthy employees not only reduce costs, but are more productive in work and life.

The City teamed up with Tria Health to work with employees at risk for drug therapy problems. If unchecked, drug therapy problems result in non-productive and missed work days, increased doctor appointments, urgent care and visits and high costs for employers. The Tria Health program identifies and addresses these issues to prevent high health care costs.

SOLUTION

The City implemented Tria Health, which was new to the market in 2009. In an effort to measure program long term effectiveness, Where did the savings come from? they decided to implement Tria Health with their employees before offering it to the entire member base. Hard Health Tria Health worked with the City to educate members on the benefit Dollar Care of participating in their program. By engaging a sub-segment of Savings Savings members in Tria’s cornerstone Advocate Program, Tria $23,000 $18,000 pharmacists were able to confidentially consult with employees at risk of having drug therapy problems. In addition, Tria Pharmacists Chronic Compliance & collaborated with the city’s on-site to ensure complete, Prevention seamless care and offer face-to-face consultations. As a result of this $42,000 partnership, employees improved their medication adherence and avoided costs for the City. RESULTS

Over the course of two years, Tria Health has been able to measure the effectiveness of their program by analyzing medical claims data for participants in the Pharmacy Advocate Program verses non-participants. Overall claims have dropped 13% for the test group versus 4% for non-Tria participants, showing an incremental savings of 9% equating to thousands of dollars. As a result, the City is implementing the program to their entire member base.

The City recently decided to extend the program for all plan members to take advantage of the additional savings.

“We were skeptical about Tria Health in the beginning, but the program has been so successful, we are implementing to our entire base.” - City of Lenexa HR Director
