  • Cricket Morkels
Cricket Morkels Google “MORKEL” to see how overwhelmingly the two cricket brothers, Albie and Morné dominate the listings. There is so much readily available in cricket information sites, youtube and others about these two outstanding players that for our story I shall be brief about their current achievements - which can readily be updated on the internet. If we have a contribution to make, it will be to place them and cricket in context of the broader family. Historically the family has been known for its prowess in rugby (see our story about the Rugby Morkels), but there has been an interest in cricket for over a century. Hendrik Johannes MORKEL (1842 – 1902), uncle of Rugby Springboks Sommie and Dougie MORKEL, was elected in November 1886 as Chairman of the first Cricket Club on the very new goldfields of the Witwatersrand (1, p45). One of his sons was a ‘very fair left- handed bowler (1, p 53). Dougie and his older brother Harry were also good cricketers (1, p52). Two early first class Morkel cricketers were brothers Denys (Denijs) and Raymond MORKEL (1, p53). They were inspired to cricket by their father, William MORKEL (1864 – 1926). From his obituary (1, p27) and the memoirs of J.P. Duminy (2), former Vice-Chancellor of Cape Town University, we know that William was a remarkable sportsman. Born in Somerset West he was a senior public servant and retired to his Windsor farm near Cape Town at Diep River. His keenest interest from his younger days was cricket. He played for Claremont Cricket Club in Cape Town for many years, primarily as a bowler.

The 16 teams have announced their squads, and warm-up games will provide a chance for teams to trial different line-ups. On Friday, South Africa and England will face each other in the first of two Twenty20 International fixtures. So who should the selectors pick? A new study published in the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation has provided an optimal team ordering algorithm consisting of three components: team selection, batting order and overs bowled. The research shows that an optimal Twenty20 line-up sometimes calls for non-traditional roles from players. Thirteen World Cup matches, including the final on 29 March, are being dedicated to THINK WISE, a partnership between the ICC, UNAIDS and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which uses the spirit of cricket to support global efforts to end the AIDS epidemic. “Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world and the game’s champions have a real power to inspire young people and share knowledge about HIV,” said UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director Jan Beagle. “The support of the cricketing world demonstrates how ending the AIDS epidemic is a common goal for people from all walks of life.” Umpires are wearing the THINK WISE logo on their shirts throughout the World Cup and a video message recorded by ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Ambassador and Sri Lanka batting legend Kumar Sangakkara is playing on the giant stadium screens in all the matches featuring the campaign. • Dhoni's Genius and Not Luck Leads Him to Success
Dhoni’s genius and not luck leads him to success Mail Today – Mon 15 Jul, 2013 9:51 AM IST Departing from Rajkot, where I had gone to my old school, Rajkumar College, an eight- year- old young girl, who had heard me giving a motivational talk during the assembly that morning, walked up to me and asked an interesting question. The young and confident girl asked: “Sir, what did you feel when you played for India?” Taken by surprise, I did take a few moments to reply and told her my feeling of elation to represent my country, the anxiety as to how I would perform. I also told her how being successful for my family, friends and all the well wishers, who played a part in my development, was important. The first shock to the system is when your name is announced in the playing XI. This usually takes place at team meetings the night before a match. The ritual is for one to say a few words to your teammates. This is followed by a sleepless night of dreaming and constructing innings and grandiose performances. The reality comes to the fore when one steps on to the ground. The noise of thousands of people brings one to the brink of nervousness and the butterflies in the tummy sends shivers up one’s spine. Amidst these entire uncontrollable sensations, one radiates an external image of confidence of a well- trained sportsman. Brtitain’s Andy Murray started the last week with an incredible performance by winning the Wimbledon singles title, and doing so for each and every British fan.
