Millington, Steve and Roberts, Gareth and Steadman, Chloe and Parker, Cathy and Quin, Simon and Ntounis, Nikos (2019) Vital and Viable With- ington. Project Report. Institute of Place Management. Downloaded from: https://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/626241/ Version: Published Version Publisher: Institute of Place Management Please cite the published version https://e-space.mmu.ac.uk Vital and Viable Withington October 2019 – V2 Foreword There are a number of structural developments currently impacting traditional retail and district centres in the UK, such as the growth in out-of-town and online retailing. However, whilst much research focuses on reversing the fortunes of city and town centres, the project on which this report is based revolves around better understanding how to improve the vitality and viability of Manchester’s smaller district centres- including Withington. Based on secondary data, a primary audit of Withington, meetings with Withington’s Neighbourhood Manager and community partnership, a workshop with 40 local stakeholders, and footfall data, this report explores Withington’s activity patterns, in relation to the IPM’s ‘footfall signature types’. It also outlines the centre’s key strengths and weaknesses by drawing upon the IPM’s ‘Top 25 Factors’. It concludes by detailing what stakeholders in Withington can do going forwards to improve its vitality and viability, in relation to the IPM’s ‘4Rs’ framework. About the Institute of Place Management The Institute of Place Management is the professional body for people involved in making, maintaining and marketing places. As part of Manchester Metropolitan University, the Institute of Place Management is dedicated to supporting people who serve places, providing them with unbiased research, continuing professional development, qualifications, conferences, events and networking opportunities. -
Wgs.Org/Shinetogether
wgs.org /shinetogether Dear Parents/Carers and Year 5 and 6 Pupils We are delighted to introduce our new programme of exciting workshops for pupils who are interested in exploring specific subjects in more depth. Previously, our series of courses offered on Saturday mornings was known as our SHiNE programme, however we are excited to announce that we now have a new name which reflects the importance of the partnership between Withington and your primary school – SHiNE Together. Whilst our preference will always be to open Withington’s doors to local children on a Saturday morning, sadly it will not be possible this year, and so we are very excited to announce our virtual courses which will run for three Saturday mornings in January and February. All sessions will be delivered via Zoom so that children can join them from home. You will need access to a computer or tablet, however all other materials will be supplied (via the post) as necessary. This brochure provides more details about the six courses on offer and the relevant protocols. In addition, we are also offering pupils interested in science and engineering the opportunity to take part in an independent project which could lead to a recognised award. If you are interested in applying and able to commit to attending all the dates of the course, please complete the online application form by visiting wgs.org/shinetogether. Once your application is submitted, we will contact your Headteacher for a reference. If you would like any further information, please email our SHiNE Together Coordinators on [email protected] We very much look forward to welcoming you onto our SHiNE Together programme.
