E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Knowledge of the Soricidae occurring in Vietnam has recently expanded with the discovery of several species previously unknown to science. Here we describe a new species of white-toothed shrew belonging to the genus Crocidura from lowland areas in southern Vietnam and from a river valley in north-eastern Cambodia. This small to medium sized species is diagnosed on the basis of external features, cranial proportions and morphology of the last upper and lower molars. Comparisons are made with other species of Crocidura known to occur in Vietnam and the biogeography of the regions where the new species has been found, is briefly discussed. Diagonal 645, 08028 Barcelona, Spain Abstract: Diet and helminth fauna were analysed in Gallotia stehlini (Schenkel, 1901), a giant lacertid lizard endemic to Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) in order to explore eventual relationships between both traits. This species is mainly herbivorous, eating a large proportion of plant matter (occurrence 97.1%) including not only seeds but also leaves and other vegetative parts. Helminth fauna included many helminth species typical of herbivorous reptiles, and intestinal helminth diversity was high. A comparison with other lacertids suggests that both traits, diet and helminth fauna, result from an adaptation to insular conditions. Canarian Gallotia, a separate lineage evolving for a long time in insularity, constitutes the most modified lacertid group in this sense. Key words: Canary Islands, diet, lizards, parasites. The dataset contains more than 24,000 records of rodent and insectivore species from 23 districts, including Saransk. A major part of the data set was obtained during expedition research and at the biological station. The work is based on the materials of our surveys of rodents and insectivo- rous mammals conducted in Mordovia using both trap lines and pitfall arrays using traditional methods. (2020) on the Crimean Peninsula serves as an example of such research. The Palaeontological Association 63rd Annual Meeting 15th–21st December 2019 University of Valencia, Spain PROGRAMME ABSTRACTS AGM papers Palaeontological Association 6 ANNUAL MEETING ANNUAL MEETING Palaeontological Association 1 The Palaeontological Association 63rd Annual Meeting 15th–21st December 2019 University of Valencia The programme and abstracts for the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Palaeontological Association are provided after the following information and summary of the meeting. An easy-to-navigate pocket guide to the Meeting is also available to delegates. Venue The Annual Meeting will take place in the faculties of Philosophy and Philology on the Blasco Ibañez Campus of the University of Valencia. The Symposium will take place in the Salon Actos Manuel Sanchis Guarner in the Faculty of Philology. The main meeting will take place in this and a nearby lecture theatre (Salon Actos, Faculty of Philosophy). There is a Metro stop just a few metres from the campus that connects with the centre of the city in 5-10 minutes (Line 3-Facultats). Alternatively, the campus is a 20-25 minute walk from the ‘old town’. Registration Registration will be possible before and during the Symposium at the entrance to the Salon Actos in the Faculty of Philosophy. During the main meeting the registration desk will continue to be available in the Faculty of Philosophy. Oral Presentations All speakers (apart from the symposium speakers) have been allocated 15 minutes. It is therefore expected that you prepare to speak for no more than 12 minutes to allow time for questions and switching between presenters. We have a number of parallel sessions in nearby lecture theatres so timing will be especially important. -
Studies on the Most Traded Medicinal Plants from the Dolpa District of Nepal

Gewali Division of Visiting Professors Institute of Natural Medicine University of Toyama Abstract The traditional uses, major chemical constituents and prominent biological activities of the most traded medicinal plants from Dolpa district of Nepal are described in this article. Cradled on the laps of the central Himalayan range, Nepal (147,181 Km2) is sandwiched between two Asian giants, India on the South and China on the North. Nepal is divided into 14 zones and 75 districts. The Karnali zone, which has a border with Tibet region of China, is made up of five districts. Dolpa district (7,889 km²) is one of them. Dolpa district’s topography starts from the subtropical region (1575 meter) and ends in the nival region (6883 meter) in the trans-Himalayan region. The district has a population of about 29545 with Hindu 60%, Buddhist 40% including 5.5% ancient Bonpo Religion. Major ethnic groups/castes belonging to both Hindu and Buddhist religions include Kshetri, Dangi, Rokaya, Shahi, Buda, Thakuri, Thakulla, Brahmins, Karki, Shrestha, Sherpa and other people of Tibetan origin. The languages spoken are Nepali, Dolpo and Kaike. Dolpo is a variant of the Tibetan language. Kaike is considered indigenous language of Tichurong valley. In the Dolpa district, the traditional Tibetan medical practices are common. The traditional Tibetan practitioners called the Amchis provide the health care service. The Amchis have profound knowledge about the medicinal herbs and the associated healing properties of the medicinal plants found in the Dolpa district. -

Box 37012, Washington, D.C. 20013-7012, U.S.A. <[email protected]> Abstract The original description of the Egyptian Pygmy Shrew or Sacred Shrew, Sorex religiosus I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (Mammalia: Soricidae: Crocidura religiosa), was based on mummies obtained by Joseph Passalacqua from the ancient Egyptian necropolis at Thebes, Egypt. The description and naming of this species is commonly credited to Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire’s (1827) compendium and review of shrews in the Mémoires du Muséum d’Histoire naturelle. However, this author also described this species in two earlier publications. The first was in a footnote to Passalacqua’s (1826) Catalogue raisonné et historique des antiquités découvertes en Égypte; the second in January 1827 in the 11th volume of the Dictionnaire classique d’Histoire naturelle. In each case, he explained what he considered to be the distinguishing characteristics of the species and presented its common and scientific names. Priority, therefore, goes to Geoffroy Saint- Hilaire’s description in Passalacqua’s (1826) Catalogue.
