Affirmative Action for Lesbians and Gay Men: a Proposal for True Equality of Opportunity and Workforce Diversity
Affirmative Action for Lesbians and Gay Men: A Proposal for True Equality of Opportunity and Workforce Diversity Jeffrey S. Byrnet The status quo that privileges certain groups over others cannot be changed, except self-consciously.... We cannot ensure that our institu- tions reflect the ideals of equality, fairness, and equal opportunity which are part of our culture without affirmative action.' [Gay and lesbian people] don't need affirmative2 action-we're already here. We need the freedom to be visible. Despite the prominence of both "affirmative action" and "gay and lesbian rights"' at the center of the civil rights debate in the United States, remarkably little thought has been given to affirmative action for lesbians and gay men.4 When the issue of affirmative action for gay and lesbian people is raised at all, it is almost always mentioned as a feared result of enacting antidiscrimination laws ,5 is occasionally cited briefly in a footnote, 6 or is simply presented t Law Clerk to Chief Justice Joseph P. Corpo, Memória E AIDS Na Obra De Caio Fernando Abreu
Homoafetividade. AIDS. Intimidade. Abstract The work of Caio Fernando Abreu projects in his writings subjective and fictional maps. Death, AIDS, life and memory are portrayed in the writer's ouvre. The presence of the theme of homoaffectionalism, the camp and queer humour and the disclosing tone of Caio's short stories, novels and chronicles creates spaces of intimacy between the writer and the reader. Keywords: Caio Fernando. Homoaffectionalism. AIDS. Intimacy. -
A Semantic Look at Feminine Sex and Gender Terms

Suguitan University of the Philippines [email protected] [email protected] Gayspeak, like any other language, is constantly changing. But unlike other languages, words and terms in this colorful tongue undergo change so quickly that it would be impossible to come up with a dictionary of the language that wouldn’t become obsolete within a matter of months, weeks, or even days. In spite of this, there is a thread that holds this language together, and that is freedom, freedom from the rules and dictates of society. Murphy Red, in his article Gayspeak in the Nineties, gives a background on this vibrant language in the Philippines: The centuries-old bigotry against homosexuals…exiled [them] away from the mainstream. On the margins gays saw, though only through rose-tinted glasses, a semblance of freedom in terms of self- expression. Even in their language, the gays observed no rules at all. Thus blossomed a language that some gay activists even found to be an effective code in front of the “enemies.” (1996: 41) According to Montgomery’s An Introduction to Language and Society, anti- languages are “extreme versions of social dialects” which tend to “arise among 1 subcultures and groups that occupy a marginal or precarious position in society… (1995: 96).” Given this definition, gay lingo is an anti-language. Or at least it used to be. -

Said Pela beleza. -

Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Oral Sex Among Rural and Urban Malawian Men
Kerwin et al. 2012 Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Oral Sex among Rural and Urban Malawian Men Jason Kerwin * Department of Economics, University of Michigan Rebecca Thornton Department of Economics, University of Michigan Sallie Foley Graduate School of Social Work, University of Michigan March 2012 ABSTRACT Despite medical evidence that female-to-male oral sex carries a much lower risk of HIV transmission than unprotected vaginal intercourse, there has been little research on the practice of fellatio in Africa. We use a sample of 1216 men in rural Malawi and 1537 uncircumcised men in urban Malawi to examine the prevalence of oral sex. While 97 percent of the rural sample and 87 percent of the urban sample reported having had vaginal sex just 2 percent and 12 percent respectively said they had ever received oral sex. Only half of the rural sample, and less than three quarters of the urban sample, reported having heard of oral sex. We find that education and condom use predict oral sex knowledge; in contrast, media exposure and beliefs about HIV do not significantly predict knowledge about oral sex after controlling for other confounding factors. The large gap between sexual activity and oral sex prevalence implies substantial scope for fellatio as another safer sex strategy in Malawi and potentially in other African countries as well. * Corresponding author: Thornton, Department of Economics, 611 Tappan St., Ann Arbor, MI, 48109.
