  • The Rise of Late-Stage Funding for European Technology Scale-Ups
Blooming Late: The rise of late-stage funding for European technology scale-ups NOVEMBER 2019 Introduction Europe’s technology industry continues to grow up. Across the EU, Israel, Russia and Turkey, startup ecosystems are flourishing, expanding and - in a few places - maturing into veritable world-class hotbeds for innovation. Evidently, challenges remain and Europe will have to overcome many of them to even have a chance of staying competitive in an ever-evolving world - and with haste to boot. To continue scaling up and accelerate the maturation process of its key tech hubs, Europe has to play to its strengths and eliminate some of its inherent weaknesses to mitigate the risk of getting left behind. Two of these weaknesses have historically been the lack of major exits and late-stage financing rounds (€100 million and more) for Europe’s fastest-growing tech businesses as catalysts for growth. As we’ve detailed in previous reports on the influx of capital for Europe’s finest tech startups, there has been a tremendous increase in investment volume for early-stage and growth-stage companies in recent years, with no signs of a slowdown so far. Numbers only tell part of a story, but the rise in seed and growth capital (Series A-B-C) flowing to European tech businesses across the region paints a picture of a healthy collection of ecosystems with potential for further growth. But when it comes to really big rounds of financing, Europe hasn’t really seen many of those to date, certainly not in comparison to the US and, increasingly, China.

This guide will help you understand the basic context to start getting into this subject. In addition, there will be occasional videos that we believe will help you gain a greater understanding of the concepts listed. 3 Basic Processes First, for a company to raise capital, foundation rounds are necessary. The basic ones that need to be taken into account for these processes are the following. Acquisition: When one company purchases most or all of another company's shares to gain control of that company. Funding Anytime a company raises money from one or more Round: investors. TheyÊre given a letter, such as A Round, B Round, C Round, etc. because each round follows another. The letter identifies which number of rounds theyÊre on. A. Early-Stage Funds: These funds are generally from $2 million to $15 million in size and invest in seed stage and Series A companies but occasionally lead a Series B round. They are also referred to as Seed Rounds, as they help lay the foundation for a company. B. Mid-Stage Funds: These funds usually range from $30 million to $60 million. They generally invest in Series B and later rounds. C. Late-Stage Funds: Take place when the company is successful and self-lowered.

Matt Murrie, Social Entrepreneur and edupreneur, Executive Director and Chief Curiosity Curator for What If…? 360 Matt will deliver a session on the entrepreneurial perspective, helping set the tone for the conference: “One of the greatest things I’ve learned we can do to live fuller lives is to think and live like entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship isn’t about opening a business; it’s about adopting a perspective. The entrepreneur’s perspective is unique because it’s a process. This process is one that is laser-focused on solving problems. Successful entrepreneurs solve those problems by using skills like empathy, creativity, curiosity, lifelong learning, communication and collaboration. By embracing this entrepreneurial perspective and applying it to your life, it helps you close the gap between who you are and who you want to be. It’s not always easy or pretty, but the entrepreneurial journey is one that blazes paths of opportunity for more doing, less wondering, and a life full of purpose.” 6:00 – 7:00pm 10 for 10 …………………………………………………………………..Salon C, Stoney Creek Inn We’ve invited 10 remarkable women to help us celebrate 10 years.

  • Teaching Online
American Journal of Business Education – July 2010 Volume 3, Number 7 Web 2.0: What Is It And Is It For Me? Katharine A. Bohley, University of Indianapolis, USA ABSTRACT This article will define Web 2.0 and determine if it is “right” for you. The author has been teaching with technology for over ten years and has identified Web 2.0 categories that are emerging in higher educational institutions. A summary of seven categories of the “Education Winners” as well as a comparison of each of the winners will be provided. After reading this article, one should be able to determine if Web 2.0 tools might be of interest to them in using in order to promote learning in the classroom. Moreover, the reader will be able to determine what tools are of interested to them in order to determine where the starting point should be for them and their students. Keywords: Web 2.0, Social Bookmarking, Start Pages, Aggregators, Teaching, Learning, Technology WHAT IS WEB 2.0? ccording to Tim O'Reilly's, “Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated service that gets better the more people use it, A consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while providing their own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an "architecture of participation," and going beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to deliver rich user experiences”.i If you are not a technological advanced it is challenging to truly understand the meaning of Web 2.0.

LUCRE stands for Local and User-Created Services. The project is part of the Flexible Services research programme, one of the programmes of the Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation in the ICT field (TIVIT) and funded by Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) and the participating organizations. The Flexible Service Programme creates service business activity for global markets. The programme has the aim of creating a Web of Services. The programme creates new types of ecosystems, in which the producers of services, the people that convey the service and the users all work together in unison. As part of such ecosystems, LUCRE will develop an easy-to-use, visual service creation platform to support the creation of context aware mobile services. The goal is to support user-driven open innovation: the end- users (people, local businesses, communities) will be provided with tools to compose new services or to modify existing ones. The service creation platform will build on the technology of existing mashup tools, widget frameworks, and publish/subscribe mechanisms.
