The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. Trachtman Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP Jeff Trachtman served as chair of Kramer Levin’s pro bono committee for 17 years. “The firm has been involved in LGBTQ equality issues go- ing back to the formation of GMHC, in 1981, as recounted in ‘The Normal Heart,’ a play about the early days of AIDS by Larry Kramer, whose brother was a firm founder. In the 1990s, I was asked to do an amicus brief in Boy Scouts v. Dale— what we used to call the ‘Homo 101’ brief, educating the courts about gay peo- ple. Later, we co-counseled with Lambda Legal on New York’s marriage equality challenge, Hernandez v. Robles.” Trachtman and the firm helped win one of the nation’s first rulings for marriage equality in that case. Although it was reversed on appeal in 2006, “there was such a backlash that the state assembly passed a marriage bill a year later, and the state senate followed in 2011. So our case did have an impact.” Trachtman has also filed Supreme Court amicus briefs in cases like Windsor, Obergefell, and Mas- terpiece Cakeshop representing “a wide range of mainstream religious groups favoring equality” and recently filed a similar brief in Bostock v. Clayton County, “which will determine whether Title VII covers gay and trans people.” Earlier, Trachtman also represented the lesbian partner of a 9/11 victim “seeking recognition as a surviving spouse under the Victims’ Fund.” Trachtman sees a mixed picture for the future. -

Isa Pramana Koesoemadinata2, Patra Aditia3 1,2,3 Desain Komunikasi Visual, Fakultas Industri Kreatif , Universitas Telkom, Bandung Indonesia Abstract This paper aims to explore the aesthetics aspect of the live-action versions of the Joker character. We argue such incarnations might be regarded as a set form of discourse-aesthetics in Foucaultian perspective, which is resulted from the flux between power and knowledge. Through this paper, we found that all of the live-action versions of the Joker character, such as the Cesar Romero’s (Batman TV series, 1966-1968), Jack Nicholson’s (Batman, 1989), Heath Ledger’s (The Dark Knight, 2008), Jared Leto’s (Suicide Squad, 2016), Joaquin Phoenix’s (Joker, 2019) produce discontinuities that stirred the established set of meanings. Combining the aesthetic theory of Feldman and Foucault, we further explored the live-action versions of the Joker which can be considered as a alterntive discourse that set to liberate us from the decadent meanings which imprisons human freedom. Opponents purchased newspaper advertisements which charged that the publicly funded production promoted a "homosexual, anti-family lifestyle." They held a rally, which attracted approximately 1,200 demonstrators. SMSU's attorney argued that the First Amendment barred cancellation ahsent substantial government interest, and asserted that the play was not obscene. Play opponents did not raise constitutional arguments, but suggested that freedom without commitment to moral order amounted to a "free-for-all." Some proponents of the production used the occasion to further AIDS education, while others labelled the play's critics as bigots. An arson incident brought national attention to the controversy and accusations from both sides in the dispute. The universi:4 formed a committee to oversee security for the play's performances. -

The advantage to you as a television viewer is that you will not only be able to make informed judgment about the television programs you watch, but also you will better understand your reaction and the reactions of others who share the experience of watching. Critical acuity enables you to move from casual enjoyment of a television program to a fuller and richer understanding. A viewer who does not possess critical viewing skills may enjoy watching a television program and experience various responses to it, such as laughter, relief, fright, shock, tension, or relaxation. These are fun- damental sensations that people may get from watching television, and, for the most part, viewers who are not critics remain at this level. Critical awareness, however, enables you to move to a higher level that illuminates production practices and enhances your under- standing of culture, human nature, and interpretation. Students studying television production with ambitions to write, direct, edit, produce, and/or become camera operators will find knowledge of television criticism necessary and useful as well. Television criticism is about the evaluation of content, its context, organiza- tion, story and characterization, style, genre, and audience desire. Knowledge of these concepts is the foundation of successful production. THE ENDS OF CRITICISM Just as critics of books evaluate works of fiction and nonfiction by holding them to estab- lished standards, television critics utilize methodology and theory to comprehend, analyze, interpret, and evaluate television programs. -
