STATION.--01536500 SUSQUEHANNA RIVER AT WILKES-BARRE, PA LOCATION.--Lat 41`15'03", long 75`52'52", Luzerne County, Hydrologic Unit 02050107, on left bank at downstream side of North Street bridge in Wilkes-Barre, and 1.8 mi upstream from Toby Creek. DRAINAGE AREA.--9,960 mi2. PERIOD OF RECORD.--April 1899 to current year. Gage-height records collected at same site since November 1890, contained in reports of U.S. Weather Bureau. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 510.86 ft above sea level (NAVD 1988). See WSP 1722 for history of changes prior to Mar. 23, 1949. May 23, 1949 to Sept. 30, 1996, at site 800 ft downstream. EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum stage known prior to 1899, 33.1 ft, Mar. 18, 1865, from floodmarks, discharge, about 232,000 ft3/s. PERIOD OF RECORD.--March 1995 to current year. April 1997 to September 2010, stage only. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 451.37 ft above sea level. REMARKS.--The streamgage cannot record stream levels below a stage of 1.39 feet. Prior to 1995, data at this station were provided by outside sources. FLOOD STAGE.--NOAA, National Weather Service river forecast station flood stage provided to USGS April 1999 is 19 feet. DRAINAGE AREA.--11,220 mi2. PERIOD OF RECORD.--March 1899 to current year. Prior to April 1905 monthly discharge only, published in WSP 1302. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 431.29 ft above sea level. Prior to June 29, 1939, nonrecording gage at or near Mill Street bridge at same datum. Since Oct. 1, 1971, water-stage recorder for Susquehanna River at Sunbury (station 01553990), used as an auxiliary gage. EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Flood of Mar. 18, 1865, reached a stage of 28 ft, discharge not determined. DRAINAGE AREA.--18,300 mi2. GAGE.--Datum of gage is 419.66 ft above sea level. REMARKS.--Gage acts as an auxiliary gage, using the gage height to compute slope discharges at upstream sites. COOPERATION.--Funding for the operation of this station is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Geological Survey.
