Question No. 17: Regarding instrument support, the basis for your conclusions is:……….99 vi ABSTRACT The purpose of this monograph was two-fold: (1) to bring together a scattered array of literature about performance injury prevention (related to violin/viola support) into one source, organize and synthesize this literature with the intention of identifying principal issues, compare coverage and recommendations, and identify consistencies and inconsistencies; and (2) to assess the perceptions of upper string musicians and teachers about injury prevention in the context of the literature. For the first purpose, a comprehensive bibliography of relevant literature was developed. For the second purpose, a survey based on information revealed through the literature was developed and distributed. Total respondents (N = 61) divided as follows: college professors (n = 20), teachers of pre-college string students (n = 27), and college violin and viola majors (n = 14). The research question was answered by comparing perspectives from the literature to respondents’ perspectives. Five principal issues were identified: medical problems; general considerations; customizing instrument placement; customizing shoulder rests; customizing chin rests. Their coverage was extensive in most sources. Consistencies were revealed regarding the majority of the issues. Inconsistencies were revealed relative to customizing shoulder rests and chin rests. Generally, between literature and survey there was more consistency than expected; in

Baroque Instruments The Baroque Cello and Its Performance Marc Vanscheeuwijck The instrument we now call a cello (or violoncello) apparently deve- loped during the first decades of the 16th century from a combina- tion of various string instruments of popular European origin (espe- cially the rebecs) and the vielle. Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document.

It was a memorable experience for me, and I was struck by the melodies, the power, and the emotion in the work. As I became more familiar with the piece I came to understand that it holds a significant position in the cello repertory. It has been praised extensively by cellists, conductors, composers, and audiences, and is one of the most frequently performed cello concertos since it was premiered by the English cellist Leo Stern in London on March 19th, 1896, with Dvorak himself conducting the Philharmonic Society Orchestra. In this document I provide a pedagogical method as a practical guide for students and cello teachers who are planning on learning this concerto. Using a variety of historical sources, I provide a comprehensive understanding of some of the technical challenges presented by this work and I propose creative and effective methods for conquering these challenges. Most current studies of Dvorak’s concerto are devoted to the analysis of its structure, melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, instrumentation, and orchestration. Unlike those studies, this thesis investigates etudes and student concertos that were both precursors to – and contemporary with – Dvorak’s concerto.

If the left-hand fingers can comfortably curl around the scroll, with the elbow slightly bent, the instrument is not too large. Straining to play one too large can be bad for your music or your health. Fitting the Cello - Sit with knees bent square, the C-peg behind the left ear, the middle finger of the left hand able to touch the top of the bridge. (The violin shop can replace a too short end pin.) Fitting the Bass - Stand behind the bass in playing position, the nut level with the temple, the middle finger of the left hand able to touch the top of the bridge without bending forward. (Note - the normal "adult" size bass is 3/4, not 4/4.) Chin Rests and Shoulder Rests - These should let you play comfortably and securely. Your teacher can advise. Often the original chin rest is OK. Or perhaps a “Teka” or, for a few, a central “Flesch.” A Kun or similar shoulder rest. Watch out for worn pads that might scratch your instrument. Cleaning - Use a dry untreated cloth to clean the instrument after use - a man's handkerchief is good. If you need to clean or polish it, use only a white liquid violin shop type. Have any cracks or openings repaired first, wipe it on with a clean soft paper towel (not the dry cloth kept in your case!) and rub it all off.

The cello has a wondrously broad spectrum of sonic possibility, yet must be approached in a different way than other string instruments, owing to its construction, playing orientation, and physical mass. Throughout the history of the cello, many resources regarding the core technique of the cello have been published; this book makes no attempt to expand on those sources. Divers resources are also available regarding the cello’s role in orchestration; these books, however, revolve mostly around the use of the instrument as part of a sonically traditional sensibility. The techniques discussed in this book, rather, are the so-called “extended” techniques; those that are comparatively rare in music of the common practice, and usually not involved within the elemental skills of cello playing, save as fringe oddities or practice techniques.
