The University of Tulsa dedicated the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday, Dec.14, 2001. The state-of-the-art tennis ­facility was quickly ushered into service during its first season of collegiate tennis. INTRO

Mike Case, developer and philanthropist, was the driving force behind the project. “The dedication completed more than a year of con- struction and hard work, and propels Golden Hurricane tennis into a new era,” said the late Fulton Collins, chairman of the TU Board of Trustees, at the dedication. “This facility will showcase tennis talent, not only our students, but also will serve as a venue for world-class tournaments, exhibitions and clinics right here in our community. On behalf of the university, I congratulate Mike on his super efforts in mak- ing this facility a reality.”

Upham’s extensive professional service and accom- plishments have included commissioner of the West- ern Association of Schools and Colleges; chairman of the Board of Directors of the Council of Graduate Schools; president, National Physical Science Consor- tium; director of The American Mutual Funds; direc- tor of the St. Francis Health System; director of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce; director of the American Council on Education; director of the National Colle- giate Athletic Association, and member of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education Na- tional Board.

During the past decade, TU has achieved a remark- able transformation. It is ranked No. 83 among all U.S. doctoral universities and among the top 50 pri- vate universities by U.S. News and World Report. TU

2012 Brugues Earns Tulsa’s First Tennis National Championship

On October 8, 2006, The University of Tulsa’s Arnau Brugues completed a spectacular run through the main draw of the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over John Isner of Georgia to earn Tulsa’s first tennis national champion- ship.

1998 In 1998, junior Anousjka van Exel became Tulsa’s first All-America women’s tennis singles player with her two victories at the 1998 NCAA Women’s Singles anousjka van exel Championships in South Bend, Indiana . . . ranked 42nd, van Exel defeated two nationally-ranked opponents to advance into the NCAA “Sweet 16” and become TU’s first female All-America tennis player . . . in just her first season at Tulsa, van Exel became the first-ranked individual and the first player in school history to play in the modern format of the NCAA tournament . . . she finished the 1997-98 campaign with a school-record 42-12 record . . . van Exel was named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and was also named to the league’s all-conference first team . . . her final season­ singles ranking of 23rd was the highest in TU women’s tennis history.

1999 Anousjka van Exel capped off her storybook career at Tulsa by becoming the first two-time All-American in TU women’s tennis history . . . van Exel advanced to the NCAA “Sweet 16” at the 1999 NCAA Women’s Singles Championships in Gainesville, Fla. . . . she defeated 55th-ranked Bruna Colosio of LSU, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, in the first round . . . in the second round, she topped Florida’s Women’s Central Region 22nd-ranked Stephanie Hazlett, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, to win her Doubles 15th straight match and tie her own school record . . .
