Annual Quality Assurance Report of IQAC Govindammal Aditanar College for Women, Tiruchendur Annual Quality Assurance Report of IQAC Govindammal Aditanar College for Women, Tiruchendur 2010 – 2011 Govindammal Aditanar College for Women, Tiruchendur, an Arts and Science College for Women affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, was established in August 1987 by Padmashri Dr. Sivanthi Adityan in the name of his mother, to fulfil a long felt need for a quality institution of higher education exclusively for women in and around Tiruchendur. Sathya Prabha, M.A., M.Phil., Member Assistant 2 Part A: The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved at the end of the year. Plan of Action in the beginning of the year 2010 – 2011: To conduct workshops and seminars in all disciplines. To introduce more certificate courses. To conduct research oriented seminars for P.G. Students. To offer more extension activities. To motivate the teachers to take up research work. Outcomes achieved at the end of the year Successful organization of Seminars / Workshops by several departments. Nine of our faculty members were awarded with doctoral degree. Organisation of creative outreach programmes, competitions invoking commercial and social awareness as a part of our extension activities. PART – B 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution: Providing wide educational opportunities in order to improve the standard of women in and around Tiruchendur is the ultimate goal of our institution. Fulfilment of this goal is achieved by admitting more than 90% of students from the above mentioned area. 2. New Academic Programmes initiated (UG and PG) : The Department of Mathematics was upgraded as Research Centre by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. 3 3. Innovations in Curricular design and transaction : Since our college is affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, the curriculum framed by the University for all UG and PG courses has been followed. Membership in the Board of Studies: Following staff members are also actively involved in curriculum design and innovations. Dr. P. Jeyanthi, Principal i/c and Head, Research Centre, Department of Mathematics is one of the members in the Board of Studies of Mathematics , St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi. Dr. K. Mariammal, Head of the Department of Commerce is one of the members in the Board of Studies of Commerce, St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi. Mrs. S. Selvanayahi, Head of the Department of Computer Science is one of the members in the Board of studies of B.Sc (C.S), B.C.A and Certificate / Diploma / Advanced Diploma Courses in Computer Science, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. 4. Inter - Disciplinary Programmes Started : Nil 5. Examination reforms implemented : Internal Assessment System, a part of the curriculum introducd by the university was implemented by awarding internal marks based on periodic internal tests and the assignments given. 6. The demand of water is increasing day by day. So, groundwater resources play a vital role for additional demand by farmers and Industries and domestic usage leads to rapid development of groundwater. About 63% of available groundwater resources are now being used. However, the development is not uniform all over the State, and in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, intensive groundwater development had led to declining water levels, increasing trend of Over Exploited and Critical Firkas, saline water intrusion, etc. ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP The geographical area of Thoothukudi district is 459054 hectares (4590.54sq.km) accounting for 3.5% of the geographical area of Tamilnadu State. This district has well laid out roads and railway lines connecting all major towns within and outside the State. For administrative purpose this district has been divided into 8 Taluks, 12 Blocks and 41 Firkas.
