A’s News Clips, Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Whodathunkit? Baseball a paragon of labor stability John Shea, Chronicle Columnist The NFL lockout lasted 136 days. The NBA lockout is in its 139th day. By contrast, baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 11, but a new settlement through 2017 is expected soon. That means MLB, which had eight strikes/lockouts from 1972 to 1995, now is envisioning 22 years of labor peace. I asked Bill Gould, emeritus professor at Stanford Law School who was instrumental in ending baseball's 1994-95 strike, why basketball can't figure out, like baseball, how to peacefully divide the wealth. Few know sports labor like Gould, whose new book, "Bargaining With Baseball: Labor Relations in an Age of Prosperous Turmoil" illustrates law's impact on baseball history. He pointed to three differences between the sports. 1. The baseball union has maintained more aggressive stances than the basketball union. "The lack of which in basketball led (Commissioner David) Stern, who's a lawyer, to believe he could push the union around, and he's been right, until now at least," Gould said. "Baseball owners learned they can't push these (players) around." 2. The NBA has more "marginal franchises with economically perilous circumstances" than MLB - including Sacramento, Toronto and Memphis. "I don't think baseball has any teams like that," Gould said. I mentioned the A's, and he called them "an aberration. They seem to be calculating that they can go elsewhere." 3. Race. "Look at who comes to NBA games and who has the money," said Gould, who's African American.

Introduction The Quality of Pitch (QOP) statistic uses PITCHf/x data to extract the trajectory, location, and speed from a single pitch and is mapped onto a -10 to 10 scale. A value of 5 or higher represents a quality MLB pitch. In March 2015 we presented an LA Dodgers case study at the SABR Analytics conference using QOP that included the following results1: 1. Clayton Kershaw’s no hitter on June 18, 2014 vs. Colorado had an objectively better pitching performance than Josh Beckett’s no hitter on May 25th vs. Philadelphia. 2. Josh Beckett’s 2014 injury followed a statistically significant decline in his QOP that was not accompanied by a significant decline in MPH. These, and the others made in the presentation, are big claims.

  • A's News Clips, Friday, June 25, 2010 Oakland A's Reliever Michael
A’s News Clips, Friday, June 25, 2010 Oakland A's reliever Michael Wuertz's struggles are puzzlement By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Observe Michael Wuertz in the A's clubhouse, and there's little that suggests how rough this season has been on him. The soft-spoken reliever generally keeps to himself at his locker, much as he did last season when he was mowing down American League hitters with regularity. He isn't fooling the opposition nearly as much in 2010, and without much prodding, Wuertz opens up about his frustration. "I've never struggled like this before," he said before Wednesday's A's loss against the Cincinnati Reds. "It's been hard mentally, but it's one of those things you've got to forget about." It's easy to point to the A's hitting woes for why they have lost ground rapidly in the American League West. Long-term injuries to starting pitchers Brett Anderson and Justin Duchscherer haven't helped. But the A's normally trusty bullpen also has shown vulnerability, posting a 2-6 record with a 4.97 ERA in June. Wuertz's struggles stand out if only because he was so dominant last year, his first season with Oakland. As the setup man for closer Andrew Bailey, Wuertz led AL relievers with 102 strikeouts. He averaged 11.67 strikeouts per nine innings, the second-highest rate by a reliever in Oakland history, and held opponents to a .188 batting average. This season has told a different story. After missing the first month with right shoulder tendinitis, Wuertz has posted a 7.11 ERA in 17 games heading into tonight's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Right-hander Parker Dunshee fired 7.1 hitless frames, allowing just one baserunner through the first seven innings. Justin Ferrell made a spot start in place of Forrest Whitley, who was scratched from his Friday assignment. Ferrell tossed two scoreless innings to begin the ballgame. In the third, Astros right-hander Chris Deven- ski allowed a two-run homer to Tyler Ramirez. Ryan Harman entered in the fourth and retired the first nine men he faced. Skye Bolt bucked the trend with a lead-off blast in the seventh for a 3-0 lead. With one on and one out in eighth, the Hounds went to their closer Kyle Finnegan. Two walks loaded the bases but Finnegan struck out Ronnie Dawson to thwart the threat. Corpus Christi’s first hit was a lead-off single by catcher Lorenzo Quintana in the ninth. Randy Cesar followed with a base hit through the right side. Chas McCormick later put the Hooks on the scoreboard by placing an RBI infield single behind second base.
