Keller October 2019 The “I am” statements of Jesus The purpose of this paper is to briefly show the significance of the “I AM” statements Jesus makes in the book of John. The beginning will focus on the background of the phrase “I AM” in its origination and significance in the Old Testament, and how the Israelites view the nature of the statement. This will be followed by a special emphasis in both content and purpose of the seven “I am” statements and conclude with the significance of some unique “I am” phrases. The significance of the “I Am” statements made by Jesus cannot be understated, and they are unique in the Gospel of John. Some phrases clearly identify Christ with God, while others, like the seven “I am” statements, are used in conjunction with a metaphor. When Jesus uses the phrase “I am” in this sense, He is not just equating Himself with God, but equating Himself with the attributes of God such as sustainer, redeemer, protector, and guide. “In most instances, Jesus is presented as ‘exegeting’ his own significance in light of Old Testament images.”1 It will be helpful then to understand the significance of the phrase “I AM” in the Old Testament and then take a look at each of the statements in the New Testament. אֶהְ יֶה - I AM In Exodus 3 God gave Himself the title “I AM” (hayah); a phrase which literally “means the eternally self-existent being.”2 God uses the title several more times in Deut.

At each stage Matthew adds to Mark’s story material that addresses concerns of his community. The overall story will be familiar to most readers. We shall focus on the features that are distinctive of Matthew’s version, while keeping the historical situation of Jesus’ condemnation in view. Last Supper, Gethsemane, Arrest and Trial (26:1–75) The story of Jesus’ last day begins with the plot of the priestly leadership to do away with Jesus (26:1–5). As in Mark 14:1-2 they are portrayed as acting with caution, fearing that an execution on the feast of Passover would upset the people (v 5). Like other early Christians, Matthew held the priestly leadership responsible for Jesus’ death and makes a special effort to show that Pilate was a reluctant participant. Matthew’s apologetic concerns probably color this aspect of the narrative. While there was close collaboration between the Jewish priestly elite and the officials of the empire like Pilate, the punishment meted out to Jesus was a distinctly Roman one. His activity, particularly in the Temple when he arrived in Jerusalem, however he understood it, was no doubt perceived as a threat to the political order and it was for such seditious activity that he was executed. Lesson 3 was a discussion of His illegal trial before Annas the former high priest, and the fact no formal charges were made against Him. 4. This lesson will be a discussion of His Pre-Dawn Trial Before Caiaphas And The Sanhedrin. Pre-Dawn Trial Before Caiaphas And The Sanhedrin 1. Jesus was first tried before Annas. (Jn. 18:12-13, 24). JOH 18:12 So the Roman cohort and the commander, and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, JOH 18:13 and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. JOH 18:24 Annas therefore sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 2. He will now be tried before the Sanhedrin and Caiaphas the current high priest. (Jn. 18:13, 24). 3. There will be later a post-dawn trial before Sanhedrin and after that a trial before Pilate the Roman governor. 4. The gospel writers all mention this pre-dawn trial before Caiaphas. (Matt. 26:57; Mk. 14:53; Lk. 22:54; Jn. 18:24). MAT 26:57 And those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.
