Frieze and Beyond: Artful Happenings for October 2018

As one of the world’s largest contemporary fairs, Frieze London affords the opportunity to view and buy pieces from over 1,000 of today’s leading and up-and-coming artists from more than 160 of the world’s most innovative and forward- thinking galleries. With a programme of talks and themed events running alongside the main exhibition, Frieze marks the most packed week in the calendar of London’s art world.

Exhibitions

Frieze Sculpture Dramatically installed for its second year in Regent’s Park’s English Gardens and curated by Clare Lilley, Director of Programmes at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, this display brings together exceptional outdoor works by 25 leading artists from around the world, including , Kiki Smith, and Kimsooja. Frieze Sculpture opened in July and runs until the close of the fair on 7 October.

Kemang Wa Lehulere, not even the departed stay grounded Marian Goodman Gallery, 5-8 Lower John Street, W1, 13 September until 20 October. Coinciding with the preeminent South African artist’s Frieze appearance, this exhibition features new sculptural works and ., The Moving Moment When I Went to the Universe Gallery, Wharf Road, London N1, 3 October until 21 December This major exhibition of new works of the venerated Japanese artist as she approaches her 90th year takes place across the Wharf Road galleries and waterside garden. It features new , including works from the iconicMy Eternal Soul series, her trademark painted bronze pumpkin and flower , and a large-scale Infinity Mirror Room.

Famous for working to his own schedule, hand- sewing his own creations, and ignoring the expectations of the fashion world, Alaïa was a maverick spirit whose unique journey is given a personal perspective in this exhibition.

Un/breakable, Christie’s Frieze Week As part of Frieze Week, Christie’s is presenting Un/Breakable, a curated evening auction dedicated to modern and contemporary ceramics. The evening will feature the work of Paul Gauguin, one of the 20th century’s pioneers of the genre, Takuro Kuwata, who gives a postmodern twist to Japanese tradition, and Julian Schnabel, whose use of broken plates is reminiscent of Abstract Expressionist . Other artists include Rosemarie Trockel, Nermin Kura, Lynda Benglis, Pablo Picasso, Lucie Rie, Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye, and Thomas Schütte.Marylebone Design District This central London district’s many attractive Georgian streets and squares have long provided inspiration and home to artists and designers. Now, the area’s diverse range of design retailers, galleries, and workshops have come together to promote and celebrate their work under the umbrella of the Marylebone Design District.Matter of Stuff Pop up Concept Gallery Fenman , 5 Lewis Cubitt Walk, N1, until 31 October Design collective Matter of Stuff have opened a pop-up gallery in the up and coming creative quarter of Kings Cross. Designed by Raw Edges, the exhibition showcases exclusive designs, material finishes, and textures from the likes of Bohinc Studio, Philip Cuttance, Harry Bertoia, and Nendo.

New openings

Gazelle 48 Albemarle Street, W1 Renowned mixologist Tony Conigliaro, a leading figure in London’s cocktail bar scene over the past decade, has teamed up with ex-Bulli chef Rob Roy Cameron for this latest Mayfair opening. Take a private lift to the sumptuous velvet and marble-bedecked restaurant on the first floor, which is then linked by a spiral staircase to a plush and intimate cocktail bar. The menu features bold sharing dishes to pair with an imaginative bespoke cocktail menu.
