Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 1, 2019 Rasmus Dahlin learning to absorb big hits, make little plays for Sabres By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News February 28, 2019 The preseason game was so long ago that Rasmus Dahlin cannot recall the opponent or the result, but the stern message delivered by teammates in the Buffalo Sabres' dressing room has resonated with him ever since. "I was upset," the 18-year-old rookie defenseman recalled. "I didn't play well and wanted to make the team. They said, 'Hey, you can't do this after every game.' " Not a practice or game has passed without a teachable moment for Dahlin, the NHL's top overall draft pick last June. During Thursday's practice in Harborcenter, both Jack Eichel and coach Phil Housley pulled him aside to offer advice. Dahlin's first season has taught him the value of a short memory, the importance of taking care of his body to withstand the grueling North American game and how to balance his fierce competitiveness with the need to make a simple play. There is still much for him to learn. That fact is powerfully illustrated even on the nights when his transcendent talent tantalizes and awes. Yet, through all the Sabres' struggles — they could be nine points back of the second wild-card when they host Pittsburgh Friday night — Dahlin's progress has not stalled. "I’m so happy," he beamed following practice Thursday. "I wouldn’t have expected this kind of season. So far it’s good, but we have to get some wins back and get back on track.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 27, 2018 How the Sabres have found success when playing beyond regulation By Mike Harrington The Buffalo News December 26, 2018 ST. LOUIS – The Buffalo Sabres have had a lot of practice playing past regulation time this season and have enjoyed plenty of success. More than a third of the Sabres' games have stretched into overtime or shootouts. The total is an NHL-high 13 of the first 37 games and Buffalo is 8-5, also leading the league in victories after 60 minutes. Last season, Buffalo played 18 games beyond regulation for the season, going 6-12 overall and just 5-10 in overtime decisions. Asked in recent days for some of the secrets to the team's play in extra time, coach Phil Housley doubled down on taking the pulse of a game and going with the players who are hot. But a closer look at the numbers shows Housley, in fact, has made some clear conclusions about his personnel when it comes to overtime. If things are tied at the end of regulation when the schedule resumes Thursday night in Enterprise Center against the St. Louis Blues, definite patterns will be on display. Housley gives heavy usage in overtime to Jack Eichel, Rasmus Ristolainen and Rasmus Dahlin, and any reasonable coach would do that. Sam Reinhart also gets a good deal of ice time. The Sabres have played nearly 39 1/2 minutes of overtime thus far, almost two-thirds of the way to an extra game, and those four players are the only ones who have compiled more than 10 minutes.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 15, 2018 Top pick Dahlin scores first goal, Sabres beat Coyotes 3-0 Associated Press By Jose M. Romero October 14, 2018 GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Five games into his first NHL season, rookie Rasmus Dahlin has his first career goal. The 18-year-old defenseman, the first overall pick in this year’s NHL draft, put in a rebound 2:45 into the game. It proved to be all the Buffalo Sabres needed in a 3-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night. Dahlin was mobbed by his teammates on the ice. “They were really glad and that makes me glad, too,” he said. “A good win for us. It’s a tough league, but we’ll just keep moving forward.” Linus Ullmark stopped 36 shots for his first career shutout, Jeff Skinner had a goal and an assist, and Conor Sheary also scored for the Sabres. Ullmark, making his season debut, appeared in his 27th career NHL game. “It was sweet,” Ullmark said of his shutout. “I didn’t have to fight much to see the puck, so all credit to the guys for helping out.” Arizona failed to score for the third time in their first four games - including the second time at home. Antti Raanta had 20 saves for the Coyotes, who have two goals this season despite outshooting their opponents in every game. “If we’re not getting out chances or not getting our shots I’d be worried. But you can’t keep moving lines every time because you’re not scoring,” Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said.
