Recently, plans were unveiled for a new Fenway Park to be built adjacent to the existing relic. There is some opposition to this by a group called Save Fenway Park, who believes that renovations should be made to the current stadium because of the fond place it holds in every baseball fan’s heart. The new plan attempts to have the best of both worlds. The new Fenway Park would retain all the amenities of the old Fenway Park, including the Green Monster and the manual scoreboard. However, the inconveniences and quirks of a ballpark built over 85 years ago will be eliminated. The seats will become wider and unobstructed and the number of restrooms will be increased. The old Fenway Park would be turned into a park, with the “Green Monster” serving as an entrance to the new Fenway Park The new 44,130-seat stadium would open in 2003 and feature 100 luxury suites and 5500 club seats. The initial estimate has the stadium priced at $545 million, which includes $350 million for design and construction, $65 million for land acquisition, $80 million for two parking structures and $50 million for infrastructure improvements. It is possible that the Red Sox will attempt to acquire a naming-rights deal with the new Fenway, despite an initial declaration that Fenway Park would never fall into the slippery slope of naming rights. It is estimated that a naming rights deal would fetch anywhere from $125-200 million. However, there is opposition to this plan. Massachusetts House Speaker Thomas Finneran “has opened the door for competing proposals” to the team’s plan for a new ballpark. Two possible other alternatives are to renovate the current Fenway Park, led by the Save Fenway Park group, or to build a new stadium around the “so-called” Crosstown site near the Southeast Expressway. The site would house the Red Sox and possibly the Patriots in two separate stadiums. The debt is serviced primarily by monies from a 2% hotel tax levied on Chicago hotels. UPDATE It has been reported that the White Sox are looking into renovating the soon to be ten year old ballpark. Improvements would include a canopy roof covering the upper deck, a restaurant in the second-floor press box area behind home plate, a pavilion area in right field above the existing Bullpen Sports Bar, and a new entrance in the left-field corner, which is basically 35th Street and the Dan Ryan, helping to ease the flow of fans in the middle of the block. The improvements are only in the preliminary planning stages; any plans would have to be approved by the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. Rent will amount to $2.5 M annually for nine years, and then one dollar per year for the remaining 21 years of the 30-year lease. However, because of the rising costs of this project the team has agreed to expand its lease in the facility to 35 years. The county will pay most of the cost using proceeds from the half-cent sales tax increase voters approved in 1996. UPDATE The Reds have undergone drastic changes in the past year. In late April, owner Marge Schott sold 5 ½ of her 6 ½ shares to a group headed by Carl Lindner for $67 million. Major League Baseball offered Schott a choice of either selling her controlling shares or accepting yet another suspension for allegedly using the names of Reds employees on falsified sales documents at one of her auto dealerships. The deal is pending approval of major league owners at their June meeting. As one of her last acts as owner, Schott guaranteed that the Reds would play in a new 45,000-seat ballpark by 2003. In March 1996, Hamilton County voters approved a half-cent increase in their sales tax to help build new stadiums for the Bengals and the Reds, who have shared Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field since 1970. In July 1998, the team and Hamilton County reached an agreement ensuring that the facility would be built in an area of Cincinnati referred to as “the Wedge.” In November 1998, Hamilton County voters rejected a proposal that would have forced the stadium downtown or forced the Reds to stay at Cinergy Field.   • The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises
    ABSTRACT MENEFEE, WILLIAM CHADWICK. The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises. (Under the direction of Dr. Judy Peel). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of “retro” stadiums on professional baseball franchises. Retro stadiums, baseball-exclusive facilities modeled on classic architectural designs of the past, were built at an increasing rate beginning in 1992 with Baltimore’s Camden Yards. This study analyzed changes in franchises’ attendance, winning percentage, revenue and team value in the seasons following a team’s relocation to a retro stadium. Retro stadiums were found to positively increase attendance, revenue and team value for franchises at a higher rate than teams that did not build retro stadiums. An analysis of these variables and a discussion of the results for all individual franchises that constructed retro stadiums during the 1992-2004 period are presented in this study. While boosters frequently claim a large positive effect of such championships, a closer examination leads to the conclusion that the impact is likely much smaller than touted and may even be negative. Subsidy advocates argue that new teams and/or stadiums provide an economic stimulus, and public support for professional sports should be construed as an investment rather than expenditure. This proposition is thought to be particularly true when the public subventions for sport produce championship teams. Two issues need to be analyzed in conjunction with this thesis. First, do greater subsidies translate into more frequent championships? Second, do sports championships correspond to higher levels of economic activity? The purpose of this report is to provide answers to these questions. A direct correlation between subsidies and championships has theoretical appeal.

    Records and History Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 27 BUD METHENY n Jan 2, 2003 Old Dominion University and the athletic program lost a legend with the passing of Bud MethenyO and his wife Fran on the same day. Bud spent 32 years at the University from 1948 to 1980 as an instructor, basketball coach, athletic director and coach of the baseball program. Baseball was his passion, and where he made his mark. As a member of the New York Yankees from 1937 to 1946, Bud played on the 1943 World Series championship squad that stopped St. Louis. Bud started for the Yankees in the second and last game of the series. As a coach of the Monarchs, he rolled up a 423‑363‑6 record and was honored by the NCAA as the Eastern Regional coach of the year in 1963 and ‘64 and National Coach Of the Year in 1964. His Monarchs won the NCAA College Division Eastern Regional championship in 1963 and 1964 and took second in 1965. Bud not only coached baseball, but he was the men’s basketball head coach from 1948‑1965, compiling a 198‑163 record and posting 16 winning seasons. He served as the University’s athletic director from 1963‑1970. Following his retirement it was only fitting to honor Bud with the naming of the new baseball stadium in 1983 and with the adoption of the blue and white pin stripes of the Yankees on uniforms the following year, which coincides with the University’s new school colors, adopted in 1986.

    The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 18, 2020 * The Boston Globe Fenway Park is ready to play ball, even though we are not Stan Grossfeld The grass is perfect and the old ballpark is squeaky clean — it was scrubbed and disinfected for viral pathogens for three days in March. Spending a few hours at Fenway Park is good for the soul. The ballpark is totally silent. The mound and home plate are covered by tarps and the foul lines aren’t drawn yet, but it feels as if there still could be a game played today. The sun’s warmth reflecting off The Wall feels good. The tug of the past is all around but the future is the great unknown. In Fenway, zoom is still a word to describe a Chris Sale fastball, not a video conferencing app. Old friend Terry Francona and the Cleveland Indians would have been here this weekend and there would’ve been big hugs by the batting cage and the rhythmic crack of bat meeting ball. But now gaining access is nearly impossible and includes health questions and safety precautions and a Fenway security escort. Visitors must wear a respiratory mask, gloves, and practice social distancing, larger than the lead Dave Roberts got on Mariano Rivera in the 2004 ALCS. Carissa Unger of Green City Growers in Somerville is planting organic vegetables for Fenway Farms, located on the rooftop of the park. She is one of the few allowed into the ballpark. The harvest this year all will be donated to a local food pantry.
