Published by Department of Conservation Southland Conservancy Olearia polita PO Box 743 Invercargill SMALL–LEAVED TREE DAISY May 2007 Olearia polita is one of eight rare Olearia species included in the Small-leaved Tree Daisy National Recovery Plan. A separate fact sheet is available for each species. The aim of the factsheets is to encourage public awareness of these unique New Zealand species and to find compatible ways of managing the places where they exist. A first step towards this is to help people recognise the plants and take an interest in their welfare. Description formation. 72 NATIVE PLANTS IN A FENDALTON GARDEN DEREK COOK AND WARWICK HARRIS Usually private gardens come and go with little record of their existence. Often their duration is short and determined by the period of care the gardener who created them is able to give to them. Through creating and caring for a garden, a gardener inevitably acquires knowledge of the plants in the garden and their requirements for adequate growth. While most gardeners are happy to show and talk to people about their gardens, few leave a written record of the knowledge they acquired about the plants they grew or attempted to grow in their garden. This is a record of plants of the garden of Derek Cook created at 27 Glandovey Road, Fendalton Christchurch. As described by Mary Lovell-Smith (2001) in The Press, it is a garden that was developed as a consequence of a passionate interest in native plants. The garden is a plant collector's garden. Consequently its form is determined by the objective to grow as many different species of native plant as possible, rather than a concern for decorative appearance. Through this approach information has been obtained about which native plants are most likely to succeed in a Christchurch garden. The first list (Table 1) prepared by Derek Cook recorded plants present in the garden in August 2000 that had survived "Christchurch frosts and dry nor'westers for 5-10 years." A list made in September 2001 recording acquisitions made since the list of August 2000 is given at the end of Table 1. -

Abstract Novel habitats, rare plants and root traits. by Paula Ann Greer The loss of native plant species through habitat loss has been happening in NZ since the arrival of humans. This is especially true in Canterbury where less than 1% of the lowland plains are believed to be covered in remnant native vegetation. Rural land uses are changing and farm intensification is creating novel habitats, including farm irrigation earth dams. Dam engineers prefer not to have plants growing on dams. Earth dams are consented for 100 years, they could be used to support threatened native plants. Within the farm conversion of the present study dams have created an average of 1.7 hectares of ‘new land’ on their outside slope alone, which is the area of my research. -

Fire has a significant role in influencing the structure, pattern and function of many ecosystems. Plant flammability, which is the ability of a plant to burn and sustain a flame, is an important driver of fire in terrestrial ecosystems and thus has a fundamental role in ecosystem dynamics and species evolution. However, the factors that have influenced the evolution of flammability remain unclear. -

This study aimed to determine sensitivities vital to populations persisting in human-created areas. † Methods Population colonization, longevity and extinction were investigated over 20 years using 133 populations. Seed-bank longevity was determined from germination trials of seeds exhumed from extinct and extant sites via a 10-year glasshouse trial and by in situ sowing experiments. From 27 populations, 98 cohorts were followed and matrix models of transitions from seeds to adults were used to evaluate the intrinsic rate of population growth against disturbance histories. Ten populations (38 cohorts) with different disturbance histories were used to evaluate sensitivities in vital rates. † Key Results Most populations had few individuals (30) and were transient (,5 years above ground). The intrinsic population growth ratewas rarely .1 and all but two populations were extinct at year 20. Seeds were short-lived in situ. -
