KEVIN HUMPHREYS TD MARRIAGE EQUALITY UPDATE BAY SOUTH LEADS THE NATION IN MARRIAGE EQUALITY REFERENDUM 75% OF OUR CONSTITUENCY VOTES IN FAVOUR

On 22nd May 2015, Ireland made history by becoming the first country in the world to allow same- sex marriage by popular vote. It was a decisive national victory with 62% in favour and 38% against. Dublin Bay South returned a “Yes” vote of almost 75% - the highest percentage of any constituency. Kevin, his team and Yes Equality put together a comprehensive tally of the result. See the map inside for how your local polling station voted. MARRIAGE EQUALITY: WHAT HAPPENS NOW? Did you know that as Minister of State at the Department of Social Protection, Kevin is responsible for the General Registry Office where births, deaths and marriages are registered? It will be a few months before same-sex marriages can be solemnised in Ireland. The Dáil will have to pass the Marriage Bill which will provide in law for the solemnisation of same-sex marriages. Kevin expects this new law to be passed and implemented by early August. Kevin has a comprehensive guide on his website outlining what those who want to get married will need to do, what those in civil partnerships or planning a civil partnership will need to do, and how those already in civil partnerships or same-sex marriages carried out abroad are affected. Ireland is the last country in the EU not to have legal recognition for transgender people. As a Minister, Kevin has worked to make this law as progressive as possible, securing self-certification for those over 18, and the removal of the marriage bar. The law will allow members of the transgender community to have their preferred gender formally recognised by the State. Once passed, a person issued with a gender recognition certificate will be entitled to a new birth certificate that shows their preferred gender and new names (if changed). This means that they will be legally recognised by the Kevin with Broden Giambrone and Sara R Phillips from TENI State in their preferred gender for all purposes. Working with your local Labour Team
