A (left) R-module is a triple (R; M; ·) consisting of a ring R, an (additive) abelian group M and a binary operation · : R × M ! On Fusion Categories
Annals of Mathematics, 162 (2005), 581–642 On fusion categories By Pavel Etingof, Dmitri Nikshych, and Viktor Ostrik Abstract Using a variety of methods developed in the literature (in particular, the theory of weak Hopf algebras), we prove a number of general results about fusion categories in characteristic zero. We show that the global dimension of a fusion category is always positive, and that the S-matrix of any (not nec- essarily hermitian) modular category is unitary. We also show that the cate- gory of module functors between two module categories over a fusion category is semisimple, and that fusion categories and tensor functors between them are undeformable (generalized Ocneanu rigidity). In particular the number of such categories (functors) realizing a given fusion datum is finite. Finally, we develop the theory of Frobenius-Perron dimensions in an arbitrary fusion cat- egory. At the end of the paper we generalize some of these results to positive characteristic. 1. Introduction Throughout this paper (except for §9), k denotes an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. By a fusion category C over k we mean a k-linear semisimple rigid tensor (=monoidal) category with finitely many simple ob- jects and finite dimensional spaces of morphisms, such that the endomorphism algebra of the neutral object is k (see [BaKi]). Fusion categories arise in several areas of mathematics and physics – conformal field theory, operator algebras, representation theory of quantum groups, and others. This paper is devoted to the study of general properties of fusion cate- gories. This has been an area of intensive research for a number of years, and many remarkable results have been obtained. -

Math200b, lecture 11 Golsefidy We have proved that a module is projective if and only if it is a direct summand of a free module; in particular, any free module is projective. For a given ring A, we would like to know to what extent the converse of this statement holds; and if it fails, we would like to somehow “measure" how much it does! In genral this is hard question; in your HW assignement you will show that for a local commutative ring A, any finitely generated projective module is free. By a result of Kaplansky the same statement holds for a module that is not necessarily finitely generated. Next we show that for a PID, any finitely generated projective module is free. Proposition 1 Let D be an integral domain. Then free D-module ) Projective ) torsion-free. 1 If D is a PID, for a finitely generated D-module all the above proper- ties are equivalent. Proof. We have already discussed that a free module is projec- tive. A projective module is a direct summand of a free module and a free module of an integral domain is torsion free. By the fundamental theorem of finitely generated modules over a PID, a torsion free finitely generated module over D is free; and claim follows. p Next we show A » −10¼ has a finitely generated projec- tive module that is not free. In fact any ideal of A is projective; and since it is not a PID, it has an ideal that is not free. Based on the mentioned result of Kaplansky, a projective module is locally free. -

A NOTE ON SHEAVES WITHOUT SELF-EXTENSIONS ON THE PROJECTIVE n-SPACE. DIETER HAPPEL AND DAN ZACHARIA Abstract. Let Pn be the projective n−space over the complex numbers. In this note we show that an indecomposable rigid coherent sheaf on Pn has a trivial endomorphism algebra. This generalizes a result of Drezet for n = 2: Let Pn be the projective n-space over the complex numbers. Recall that an exceptional sheaf is a coherent sheaf E such that Exti(E; E) = 0 for all i > 0 and End E =∼ C. Dr´ezetproved in [4] that if E is an indecomposable sheaf over P2 such that Ext1(E; E) = 0 then its endomorphism ring is trivial, and also that Ext2(E; E) = 0. Moreover, the sheaf is locally free. Partly motivated by this result, we prove in this short note that if E is an indecomposable coherent sheaf over the projective n-space such that Ext1(E; E) = 0, then we automatically get that End E =∼ C. The proof involves reducing the problem to indecomposable linear modules without self extensions over the polynomial algebra. In the second part of this article, we look at the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the derived category of coherent sheaves over the projective n-space. It is known ([10]) that if n > 1, then all the components are of type ZA1. Then, using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand correspondence ([3]) we prove that each connected component contains at most one sheaf. We also show that in this case the sheaf lies on the boundary of the component. -

We first explore operads in the category of sets, and then generalize to other familiar categories. Finally, we develop tools to construct operads via generators and relations, and provide several examples of operads in various categories. For instance, the addition of real numbers, composition of functions, and concatenation of strings are all associative operations with an identity element. In other words, all three are examples of monoids. Rather than working with particular examples of sets and operations directly, it is often more convenient to abstract out their common pro- perties and work with algebraic structures instead. Math 210B. Finite-dimensional commutative algebras over a field Let A be a nonzero finite-dimensional commutative algebra over a field k. Here is a general structure theorem for such A: Theorem 0.1. The set Max(A) of maximal ideals of A is finite, all primes of A are maximal and minimal, and the natural map Y A ! Am m is an isomorphism, with each Am having nilpotent maximal ideal. Qn In particular, if A is reduced then A ' i=1 ki for fields ki, with the maximal ideals given by the kernels of the projections A ! ki. The assertion in the reduced case follows from the rest since if A is reduced then so is each Am (and hence its nilpotent unique maximal ideal vanishes, implying Am must be a field). Note also that the nilpotence of the maximal ideal mAm implies that for some large n we have n n n Am = Am=m Am = (A=m )m = A=m (final equality since m is maximal in A), so the isomorphism in the Theorem can also be expressed Q n as saying A ' m A=m for large n. Most of the proof of this result is worked out in HW1 Exercise 7, and here we just address one point: the nilpotence of the maximal ideal of the local ring Am at each maximal ideal m of A. As this book contains too much interesting material for a simple master thesis, we have narrowed our attention to chapters 1, 4 and 5. This thesis is divided into three main parts: Theory, Application and Appendix. Within the Theory chapter, we (as the name might suggest) develop the necessary theory to assist with finding irreducible representations of finite monoids. Finite monoids and their structure gives elementary definitions as regards to finite monoids, and expands on the basic theory of their structure. This part corresponds to chapter 1 in [3]. The theory of an idempotent develops just enough theory regarding idempotents to enable us to state a key result, from which the principal result later follows almost immediately. -
Infinite Groups with Large Balls of Torsion Elements and Small Entropy
INFINITE GROUPS WITH LARGE BALLS OF TORSION ELEMENTS AND SMALL ENTROPY LAURENT BARTHOLDI, YVES DE CORNULIER Abstract. We exhibit infinite, solvable, abelian-by-finite groups, with a fixed number of generators, with arbitrarily large balls consisting of torsion elements. We also provide a sequence of 3-generator non-nilpotent-by-finite polycyclic groups of algebraic entropy tending to zero. All these examples are obtained by taking ap- propriate quotients of finitely presented groups mapping onto the first Grigorchuk group. The Burnside Problem asks whether a finitely generated group all of whose ele- ments have finite order must be finite. We are interested in the following related question: fix n sufficiently large; given a group Γ, with a finite symmetric generating subset S such that every element in the n-ball is torsion, is Γ finite? Since the Burn- side problem has a negative answer, a fortiori the answer to our question is negative in general. However, it is natural to ask for it in some classes of finitely generated groups for which the Burnside Problem has a positive answer, such as linear groups or solvable groups. This motivates the following proposition, which in particularly answers a question of Breuillard to the authors. Proposition 1. For every n, there exists a group G, generated by a 3-element subset S consisting of elements of order 2, in which the n-ball consists of torsion elements, and satisfying one of the additional assumptions: (1) G is solvable, virtually abelian, and infinite (more precisely, it has a free abelian normal subgroup of finite 2-power index); in particular it is linear. -
The Exchange Property and Direct Sums of Indecomposable Injective Modules

The first gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a direct sum of inde- composable injective modules to have the exchange property. It is seen that the class of these modules satisfying the con- dition is a new one of modules having the exchange property. The second gives a necessary and sufficient condition on a ring for all direct sums of indecomposable injective modules to have the exchange property. Throughout this paper R will be an associative ring with identity and all modules will be right i?-modules. A module M has the exchange property [5] if for any module A and any two direct sum decompositions iel f with M ~ M, there exist submodules A\ £ At such that The module M has the finite exchange property if this holds whenever the index set I is finite. As examples of modules which have the exchange property, we know quasi-injective modules and modules whose endomorphism rings are local (see [16], [7], [15] and for the other ones [5]). It is well known that a finite direct sum M = φj=1 Mt has the exchange property if and only if each of the modules Λft has the same property ([5, Lemma 3.10]). In general, however, an infinite direct sum M = ®i&IMi has not the exchange property even if each of Λf/s has the same property.
