Mason Stadium in week two. This year’s game surpassed last year as the earliest ever meeting for the coveted hardware as well as the second “Battle” contested under the lights and the first night “Battle” in W.B. Mason Stadium history. The “Ol’ Bronze Hawk” is given to the winner of the annual football matchup between the Skyhawks and Hawks and was unveiled in 2006. Stonehill has held possession of the valued hardware each of the eight years so far, outscoring Saint Anselm 309-122 in that time. A little repair work had to be done to the Bronze Hawk in 2009 as it had a wing clipped while being loaded into the team’s equipment van after Stonehill’s 35-0 win in Manchester, in 2008. Stonehill has won nine-straight meetings overall between the two and is now 10-5 all-time against the Hawks. Lanier, who has earned a 3.43 cumulative grade point average as a criminol- ogy major, is Stonehill’s first Academic All-District football selection since former defensive lineman Kevin Bonnett, ‘09, received first team honors in 2008. Lanier is the first Stonehill defensive back to receive Academic All-District accolades since Sean Donahue, ‘08, in 2007. Lanier, who has been nominated for a National Football Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship, also earned NE-10 Academic All-Conference honors last season. For Henry: The Stonehill football team keeps the memory of former teammate and friend, Henry Thevenin, ‘14, close to them once again in what would have been his senior season. Thevenin passed away on June 14, 2011, due to complications from a two-month battle with leukemia. The Skyhawks continue to maintain his locker in a place of prominence in the team lockerroom. In week one of last season against Curry, the team honored Thevenin by playing its first defensive play with ten players. Theve- nin appeared in seven games for the football team, starting the last six, as a fresh- man in 2010. He totaled 18 tackles, eight solo, with a pass breakup for the Skyhawks. Thevenin was a 2009 graduate of nearby Brockton High School and prepped one year James Lanier at Suffield Academy in Connecticut. Henry Thevenin, ‘14 Aye, Aye, Captains: Head Coach Robert Talley named seniors Tim Bennett (DB), Logan Meyer (QB) and Justin Willis (1990-2011) (RB) as team captains for the 2013 season after a vote of the returning players last spring. Making an IMPACT: Prior to the start of spring ball, the Stonehill College football team welcomed Nick Clau- dio (Mattapoisett, Mass.) to its program during a draft ceremony through Team IMPACT (Inspire, Motivate, Play Against Challenges, Together). Team IMPACT is a New England based non-profit that aims at improving the qual- ity of life for kids facing life-threatening illnesses by creating unparalleled team based support systems with area college athletic teams. Nick is the latest from Team IMPACT to join the Skyhawk family as the football team joins the men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey and ice hockey teams to be involved with the program. Nick, 12-years old, was diagnosed with a brain tumor on his optic nerve in July, 2010, that put so much pressure on his optic nerve that it led to losing his vision. He has remained upbeat, being quoted as saying in a recent news article, “A loss of sight is never a loss of vision, you need to be able to look forward and keep moving.” After losing his vision, he has adapted to life being blind by teaching himself braille, learning to ski and graduating from his elementary school at the top of his class. In July 2012, doctors found two additional tumors, one on his auditory nerve. In an effort to save his hearing, doctors opted to treat it with chemo and radiation rather than doing sur- gery which carries the threat of him going deaf. Academic Success: Stonehill College has been recognized for its academic performance with regard to gradua- tion rate by earning a 97-percent Academic Success Rating (ASR) as released by the NCAA last fall. The ASR consid- Nick Claudio ers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes while also giving credit for any student-athletes that transferred from the institution while in good academic standing. In addition to Stonehill’s overall ASR of 97%, nine of Stonehill’s 16 athletic programs (cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field are combined by the NCAA) received perfect scores of 100%. Stonehill’s 97% ASR ranks second among NE-10 institutions behind just Saint Michael’s College (98%) and ranks fifth overall in NCAA Division II. The football team maintained an ASR of 95% - signifigantly higher than the federal rate of 80%. Leaders of the Pack: For the fourth-straight year, Stonehill College is partnering with Pack Network to provide live “Packcasts” of all home football and men’s and women’s basketball games along with other select athletic events. Neville averaged a Division II best 36.7 yards per kick return, running three back for touchdowns. Stonehill also earned the Northeast-10’s team sportsmanship award in 2009. Under Talley’s tutelage in 2008, Stonehill averaged 22.7 points per game - the most since the 2002 season - and finished seventh in all of Division II in turnover margin (+16). Momentous wins bookended the schedule with the Skyhawks securing the program’s first- ever win over a Division I-AA team - a 14-13 decision over Wagner in front of a packed W.B. Mason Stadium to open the season. Then, with the Class of 2009 playing their final game, Tal- ley guided his charges to a convincing 35-7 win over archrival Bentley. That victory snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Falcons and also saw the Skyhawks set a school-record with seven interceptions. In his first season at the helm, the Skyhawks won as many games as they had in the previous two seasons and made drastic improvements in all facets of the game. Stonehill opened the season with three straight wins for the first time since 1995, defeated former Northeast-10 Conference foe C.W. Post for the first time in 11 tries and had the first shut- out in nearly 60 games. Talley’s biggest impact came on the defensive side of the ball, where the Skyhawks pro- duced two All-Conference performers and finished third in the nation in turnover margin (+16). Ball security played a major factor for Stonehill, as Talley’s charges committed only 12 turnovers and national low of only four fumbles. His ball-hawking secondary helped the Skyhawks finish second in the Conference in interceptions, amassing 16 picks. Prior to his arrival in Easton, Talley held the positions of Special Assistant to former San Fran- cisco 49er head coach Mike Nolan and Assistant Offensive Line Coach, where he helped mentor a line that paved the way for a record-setting season from second-year running back, Frank Gore. The team as a whole finished sixth in the NFL in rushing yards per game (135.8), highlighted by Gore’s 1,695 yards - third most in League. Prior to his appointment with the 49ers, Talley spent eight years on the staff at Dartmouth College, rising from Defensive Secondary Coach in his first three years on the Big Green staff to Defensive Coordinator in his final five campaigns. During his time in Hanover, he developed All-Ivy defensive backs Clayton Smith and Steve Jensen, who was the 2001 Rookie of the Year. During the 1996 season, Talley was the Linebackers Coach at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. From 1991-1996, Talley was a member of the University of staff, first as assistant defensive backfield coach (1991-1992), then as defensive ends coach and special teams coordi- nator (1992-96). In 1992 the Minutemen went 7-3 and followed that season up with a 9-2 ledger, good for second in the Yankee Conference. He spent five summers learning from some of the greatest football minds in the game, including the New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants, Dick Jauron, formerly of the Chicago Bears and Dennis Green, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings. At each stop he worked exclusively with the defensive line, except for his time with the Bears, where he worked with the defensive backs. A 1991 graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, Talley served as co-captain during his senior season in 1990 and is the school’s career leader in tackles. A two-time All-America defensive back for the Terriers, he earned All-Yankee Conference honors during each of his final three seasons of play. The 42-year old Talley and his wife Sarah and their sons Jackson and Spencer, reside in Easton. Assistant Coaches

Mason Stadium

The College’s multi-purpose athletic facility, W. B. Mason Stadium, was formally dedicated on September 10, 2005. The playing field at the stadium, Timothy J. Cough- lin Memorial Field, was also dedicated on September 10th in memory of Tim Coughlin, a former football standout of Stonehill’s Class of 1980. W.B. Mason President and CEO Leo Meehan, who is also a Stonehill trustee and alumnus, announced that the Company and its alumni employees have committed $1.5 million toward cost of the almost $4 million project. The 2,400-seat W.B. Mason Stadium is one of the premier athletic facilities in the Northeast 10-Conference. The multi-purpose outdoor facility has a 400-meter, eight-lane track, artificial turf, specialty areas for track and field events, and lighting for evening use. The facility is also home to field hockey and women’s lacrosse. W.B.
